Wii U hits 400,000 US sales in first week

The Wii U seems to be off to a pretty good start in the US. As of yesterday, the console had been available for one full week, and today Nintendo told CNET that it managed to sell 400,000 units in that time. That certainly isn’t bad, with the Wii U beating out every other system Nintendo is offering at the moment.

Of course, that isn’t much of a surprise considering that the DS and the original Wii are on the way out, but it’s still something worth noting. The original Wii sold 300,000 units last week, while the the DS sold 275,000 and the 3DS posted a solid 250,000 sales. Good news all around, it seems, due in large part to the shopping frenzy that we like to call “Black Friday.”

All of those Wii U sales mean that Nintendo is having a hard time keeping the console in stock. Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime told CNET today that the company is doing the best it can to keep up with demand, as are retailers. “Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock,” Fils-Aime said. “Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they’re selling out immediately.”

For comparison’s sake, Nintendo managed to sell 600,000 original Wiis in North America during that console’s first 8 days. There are still many places around the world that haven’t received the Wii U yet – namely Europe and Japan – so it’ll be interesting to see how the console’s launch goes in those regions. Stay tuned.

Nintendo Wii U North American sales top 400K in first week

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says Wii U sales crested 400K units in its first week, according to internal sales data. That’s just part of a 1.2 million hardware sales week that Nintendo’s enjoyed across the past seven days — which include the crucial Black Friday — where the Wii saw 300K units sold, and portables dominated. Nintendo’s 3DS sold 250K, while the aged DS moved 275K — not too shabby for an eight-plus-year-old console! CNET snagged the data from Fils-Aime in a post-Wii U launch phone interview, where he characterized 3DS sales as continuing on a “record-setting pace” (now at more than 6 million units sold-in to North American retailers).

As for the seemingly paltry launch sales of the Wii U console — 200K units shy of the original Wii’s launch week — Fils-Aime says it’s a question of his company’s ability to keep it in stores and not of lacking demand. “Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as product hits retail, they’re selling out immediately,” Fils-Aime explains. Without giving any concrete promises or timetables, he adds, “We are looking to have as much product into retail as possible.”

Nintendo Wii U Sold Out Of Retail

Nintendo of America’s president, Reggie Fils-Aime, has proudly stepped forward to claim that the recently released Wii U is “essentially sold out of retail”, and we’re talking about moving approximately 400,000 units here. In fact, over the last week, Nintendo sold over 1 million hardware units, and the Wii U made up approximately 40% of the total figure, with the rest of the hardware comprising of the Wii, 3DS, and DS. Hmmm, it does seem to me that the Nintendo DS still has some legs left in it, no?

In fact, the Nintendo Wii did seem to have some more staying power, mustering up approximately 300,000 sales over the last week last week. Not bad, eh? As for the portable segment, Nintendo managed to land over 500,000 hardware units, where 250,000 3DS and 275,000 DS devices thereabouts landed in the hands of avid gamers in the US. It seemed that the technologically inferior DS outsold the 3DS simply because of the “significant” deals that retailers offered on Black Friday.

Wii U system music gets collected into unofficial ninetrack album

Want to relive the labors of setting up Nintendo’s new console? How about taking the aural route? DJ Cutman has cut together an unofficial greatest hits album from the Wii U’s built-in soundtrack, encompassing memorable ‘hits’ like the firmware update and menu tunes. Switched On: The Three Cs of Wii U

DNP Switched On The Three Cs of Wii U

In the pre-post-PC era, life was simpler for Nintendo and other successful competitors: Sell console. Sell discs. Repeat until wildly profitable. Six years ago, as Microsoft and Sony were taking part in a game of specification leapfrogging, Nintendo embraced casual and family gaming with the Wii even as it mostly ignored online play and convergent entertainment features. More than half a decade later, Sony has surpassed the original Wiimote with its Move controller and Microsoft has created a motion anti-controller with Kinect, but the Wii retains an advantage in that developers can assume the motion control is there.

Today, everyone in the games business still adheres to the basic notion of compelling software selling hardware, but the source of that software and the manner through which it drives revenue has changed via models such as digital distribution, downloadable content, free-to-play, subscription and advertising. In addition, Nintendo has launched the Wii U into living rooms in which game consoles must compete not only with each other but with Blu-ray players, TiVos, Rokus and Apple TVs for physical connections as well as smart TVs and tablets as other sources of connected entertainment experiences. How it has addressed these challenges reveals much about what the company has held dear from the Wii, what it has reluctantly accepted and what it has now embraced.

Nintendo reportedly planning Wii Mini console

All eyes may be on the Wii U at the moment, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Nintendo is ready to abandon the Wii. A new rumor from Nintendo World Report claims that the big N is planning to launch a new redesign of the original Wii, this time going a bit smaller scale. Yes, we’re talking about a Wii Mini – it seems that everyone is going for a smaller form factor these days, so why not Nintendo?

Nintendo World Report apparently received this information from an employee of a major retailer, but sadly, doesn’t spill the beans as to which retailer we’re talking about. According to this retailer’s internal release information, the Wii Mini is scheduled to launch on December 7, 2012, which is right around the corner. It’ll come packed with a sensor bar, nunchuk, and Wii Remote Plus, which is standard fare for normal Wii consoles.

Unfortunately, we’re don’t have any word on the price or size of this new Wii. It’s hard to imagine that it’ll be much smaller than the current Wii, considering that console is already significantly smaller than the Xbox 360 and PS3. New Wiis tend to be priced around $130, so we can’t see Nintendo going much higher than that in terms of pricing – if it does, we probably won’t see the price go over $200.

Now we play the waiting game. If Nintendo is really planning a Wii Mini and it’s actually scheduled to launch on December 7, we should b3 getting official word shortly. Such a redesign isn’t necessarily out of the question considering it would be a chance for Nintendo to capitalize on the holiday sales rush, but it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to take these rumors with a grain of salt anyway. Stay tuned.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: November 23, 2012

Some of us are still recovering from our food comas, but luckily the weekend is here so most of us can use that time for recouping (or chowing down on leftovers). Let’s recap the news from the day, shall we? Of course, today is Black Friday, with Apple kicking off a Black Friday sale of its own and the NPD saying that sales today could be what pushes tablet shipments above notebook shipments. We also heard from various companies that people were reaching for their phones and tablets on Thanksgiving to net some great deals, apparently not willing to wait until the Black Friday “festivities” kicked off.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, it turns out the holiday was Instagram’s biggest day ever, with tons of users taking pictures of Thanksgiving dinner and uploading them to the service. AT&T is offering refurbished iPhone 5s on its website for $99 a pop, while we caught a glimpse of the HTC Deluxe in a leaked press shot today. Nokia suffered a pretty big setback today when the head of its camera and imaging department, Damian Dinning, announced he would be leaving the company, and T-Mobile’s online stock of the Nexus 4 was brought down to nothing in mere hours after the Google Play Store linked to the listing.

The long-awaited Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition was given a gameplay trailer today while we learned that mobile data usage has doubled in the past year. The Samsung Galaxy Camera will be launching in Canada on December 7, and Nintendo has partnered with HMV to give some early Wii U adopters free games when the console launches in Europe. Nexus 4 LTE functionality has been unlocked through the use of a simple hack, and the Toyota Prius has been named the car least likely to be stolen, despite its relative popularity. Finnish police have taken a nine-year-old’s Winnie the Pooh laptop for suspected file sharing, and scientists have studied the dwarf planet Makemake for the first time.

Finally tonight, we have a number of reviews for you to read through. Cory Gunther gives us his review of the Barnes & Noble Nook HD, while Chris Burns reviews the Acer Aspire S7 and the AERIAL7 TANK DIY over the ear headphones. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you enjoy your weekend!

First UK Wii U launch event attendees get free games

The Wii U has been available in US (we use the term “available” loosely, of course) for a little under a week, but folks in Europe are still waiting for the console to arrive. The Wii U is set to launch in Europe on Friday, November 30, and if you happen to live in London, you might want to stop by the launch event Nintendo is holding at HMV’s Oxford Street store. That’s because if you get there early enough, you might be able to snag a couple free games.

Eurogamer reports that the doors will open at 11 PM on November 29, and the first 100 Wii U purchasers in line will get two free games. These include New Super Mario Bros U and another game of your choice from a pre-determined selection of titles. If you don’t manage to snag one of the first 100 spots in line, don’t despair, because there will be goodies for other launch event attendees too.

For example, if you’re one of the next 100 people in line, HMV and Nintendo will give you £5 off the purchase price of Wii U hardware or software. The freebie isn’t nearly as good as two free games, but it’s better than nothing. Finally, the first 500 people in line will be taking home goodie bag full of mysterious presents. If you’re planning to pick up your Wii U and HMV’s Oxford Street store, it seems your chances of leaving the store with some free extras are pretty good.

There will also be playable demos of New Super Mario Bros U, ZombiU, and Nintendo Land at the launch event, so if you’re on the fence about which games to buy, you’ll at least be able to check out a few while you wait for sales to start. Here’s hoping that you get to take a console home with you, because if the Wii U’s European launch is anything like its North American launch, the console will sell out quickly. Are you buying a Wii U at launch?

Amazon Instant Video App Hits Nintendo Wii U

Nintendo has bee working from early on to position the new Nintendo Wii U game console as more than just for gamers. To emphasize this point, the console has launched with a number of entertainment applications for streaming video. One of those applications that is now available is Amazon Instant Video.

The Nintendo Wii U now has its own app for Amazon Instant Video streaming that allows users access to over 140,000 movies and TV episodes. The content for the video service can be rented or purchased. Nintendo Wii U owners that have a Amazon Prime account can also stream more than 30,000 free movies and TV shows.

The app offers users smart lists that include recently watched content, genre recommendations, “more like this,” and others. The app also allows users to watch any content they purchased on other devices on the Nintendo Wii U. Other features include parental controls and a special kid zone that allows parents to manage what children have access to.

While Nintendo’s own TVii service is still set to launch this December, the console already has video streaming apps for Netflix, YouTube and Amazon.
