Nokia’s CEO Plans For Windows Phone To Hit 10% Market Share By Going After Blackberry’s Customers

Nokias CEO Plans For Windows Phone To Hit 10% Market Share By Going After Blackberrys CustomersSo we recently reported that according to a Kantar World Panel report, Windows Phone is sitting at 4.7% market share in the smartphone operating system market for the US. Considering that Nokia has pretty much put all their proverbial eggs into the Windows Phone basket, we guess we’re not surprised to hear the Finnish company’s CEO, Stephen Elop, reveal that their short term goal for Windows Phone would be for it to hit the double digit mark. Speaking to The Guardian, Elop was quoted as saying, “When we think about the milestones along this journey we are very focused on first getting to a double-digit market share, talking about Windows Phone collectively.”

The plan to reach that goal involves going after some of Blackberry’s 80 million customers, but he did state that this would mean big changes, especially to Blackberry’s corporate customers who might lose their investment in Blackberry’s BES system if they were to make the jump to another platform, such as Windows Phone. Unfortunately Elop did not state how long he thought Windows Phone would take to hit the double digit mark, but hopefully soon rather than later. What do you guys think? How long do you think it will take for Windows Phone to hit 10% market share globally?

T-Mobile Says There Won’t Be Lumia 810 LTE Support

T Mobile Says There Won’t Be Lumia 810 LTE SupportIf you happen to be a T-Mobile subscriber who has been enjoying life with the Nokia Lumia 810 for some time already, well, we hate to be the ones who burst your bubble, but it seems that those who picked up the Lumia 810 over on T-Mobile, will not be able to experience LTE support, despite hearing otherwise on the grapevine. Never mind the fact that the Nokia Lumia 810′s hardware is more than ready alongside having received regulatory approval to access Band 4 LTE, all of that is simply not going to happen as T-Mobile will not be rolling out the update that does so.

This would certainly place T-Mobile at an apparent disadvantage compared to the other carriers, as they remain as a mobile carrier to lack an LTE offering where the Windows Phone operating system platform is concerned, leaving the rest of the competition to fill in the niche, where some of the handsets include the iPhone 5, BlackBerry Z10, HTC One, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Samsung Galaxy S4.

T-Mobile reverses course, reveals Lumia 810 won’t be updated to support LTE

TMobile reverses course, reveals Lumia 810 won't be updated to support LTE

We’ve some really unfortunate news to share with Lumia 810 owners who’d purchased the handset on T-Mobile’s word that a software update would enable LTE support. As it turns out, despite the Lumia 810’s hardware readiness and regulatory approval to access Band 4 LTE, that’s not going to happen — T-Mobile isn’t going to release the update. Sadly, this isn’t an April Fools’ prank. If you’re scratching your head about the revelation, you’re not alone. Representatives for the UnCarrier first revealed to us back in January that a software update would enable LTE functionality, which is a position that it’s maintained up through last week. As it stands, this leaves T-Mobile without an LTE offering for Windows Phone users, as the smartphone field is now limited to the Apple iPhone 5, BlackBerry Z10, HTC One, Samsung Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S4. We’ve asked T-Mobile whether it might make concessions to those who purchased the Lumia 810 on good faith that an LTE software update would be released, but for the moment, you’ll need to find solace in the carrier’s speedy HSPA+ 42 network.

Nokia Lumia 720T Headed For China

Nokia Lumia 720T Headed For ChinaFolks who happen to live in the world’s most populous country (now that would be China just in case your general knowledge is not up to par), you would be pleased to hear that the Nokia Lumia 720T is headed for that part of the world. Of course, this is not the only new Windows Phone 8-powered device that will roll out in China anytime soon, but the Nokia Lumia 720T will boast of China Mobile’s own TD-SCDMA technology.

This particular smartphone has already picked up the relevant nods of approval from Chinese authorities in recent times, which is somewhat the equivalent of seeing a device getting approved by the folks over at the FCC before it hits the mass markets. So far, we have no idea as to the pricing strategy for the Nokia Lumia 720T, although it might even be “free” if you decide to settle for select plans. Other than TD-SCDMA support, the Nokia Lumia 720T does not depart from the vanilla Nokia Lumia 720 in terms of hardware in other markets.

Nokia into the microwave business now

Well, well, what do we have here? It seems that Nokia, the smartphone company from Finland that used to dominate the mobile phone market, is about to take the plunge into the home appliances market with a microwave, of all products. I say, why not? After all, the humble microwave might not be a centerpiece in your newly renovated kitchen, but it sure as heck is one of the most important pieces of the kitchen puzzle. After all, it is the microwave that helps you heat things up in the blink of an eye, making sure that those TV dinners which you bought would taste absolutely delicious in a matter of minutes. This microwave is called the Nokia 5AM-TH1N6 Constellation, which happens to be a touch-screen microwave oven – perhaps it is a sign that expertise from their Windows Phone 8-powered smartphones being handed down?

The Nokia Constellation will set itself apart with a superfast, water-cooled 8-core high-voltage transformer, where it is capable of delivering a combined performance of 5,000 watts to end-users, allowing one to heat up turnkey meal solutions in a matter of seconds. Olavi Huhtikuu, Nokia’s director of household innovation, said, “Nokia has a proven track record and extensive IPR in working with microwave radios, so for us this was a logical next step. We can attack our competition in their core business. That’s why we developed the highly innovative 5AM-TH1N6 Constellation, which will revolutionize everything from single households to canteen kitchens”

Other innovative features in the new Nokia 5AM-TH1N6 include eye-tracking technology that ensures food will stop rotating whenever you look at it, and it will even be able to adjust the temperature automatically, depending on just how hungry you look. Expect the Constellation to ship from Q2 onwards at a suggested retail price of €399 a pop.

Just in case you were wondering whether this sounds way too good to be true, or that it is just a hoot to hear the Finnish smartphone company venturing into the consumer electronics and home appliance segments of the market, do remember that today is April 1st, and what you have just read is, indeed, too good to be true.

Nokia Lumia 810 Will Not Have Its LTE Enabled, According To T-Mobile

Nokia Lumia 810 Will Not Have Its LTE Enabled, According To T MobileWant to get a Nokia Lumia device on T-Mobile’s network and take advantage of the carrier’s newly announce LTE capabilities? Well if the Nokia Lumia 810 was on your list, you might want to rethink that decision because according to Randy Meyerson, Senior Director of Product Marketing at T-Mobile, the Lumia 810 will unfortunately not be able to receive the update that would enable its LTE connectivity. According to Meyerson, “I’m following up as per my note last night.  Unfortunately, the Nokia Lumia 810 is not upgradable to LTE.  While it is true that it has a chipset that is LTE-capable in certain circumstances, the variant that was used in this device can’t be enabled for LTE.”

Indications of the Lumia 810 being LTE-enabled were discovered earlier this year through an FCC filing. However the Lumia 810 was not mentioned as one of the devices that would have its LTE capabilities enabled as only the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was mentioned. In any case if the Lumia 810 is the handset you were after, we guess you will just have to make do without 4G LTE, at least for now.

AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 Firmware Update Runs Into Issues

AT&T Nokia Lumia 920 Firmware Update Runs Into IssuesEarlier this morning, we did mention on how the Nokia Lumia 920 over at AT&T has received a spanking new firmware update, which would bump up the version to 1308, but it seems that the entire firmware update has hit an undesirable snag. Normally, updates tend to introduce improvements to a particular device, but when it comes to this flagship Windows Phone 8 powered smartphone from the Finnish smartphone manufacturer, things appeared to have gotten worse.

There is a thread over on Reddit that saw Lumia 920 owners share horror stories after installing the new update, as it concerns the handset maintaining a connection to AT&T. It seems that one user has shared his grievances on seeing his device go through the full works where connection possibilities are concerned, starting from no service to LTE with full bars, EDGE and 4G, all in a single spot without moving anywhere. Definitely not a normal occurrence, we do hope to see Nokia fix this particular issue as soon as possible, and for those who have yet to install the latest firmware update, it makes perfect sense to hold it off at the moment.

Zinio magazine app heads to Windows Phone 8 as a Lumia exclusive

Zinio magazine app heads to Windows Phone 8 as a Lumia exclusive

Zinio’s magazine app for tablets and smartphones has already found its way onto quite a few platforms (even some now-defunct ones), and it looks like it’ll soon be heading to yet another — at least partially. The company announced today that its Windows Phone 8 app will be available in the coming weeks, although you’ll need a Nokia Lumia phone to use it. Yes, this is yet another exclusive deal for a popular app, but if past history is any indication you can likely expect it to hit other devices sometime after the initial rollout. As TechCrunch notes, Zinio is also using its venture onto Windows Phone to branch out a bit from its traditional focus, with the the new app able to pull content from multiple sources into a reading list — as opposed to simply letting you jump from one magazine to the next. You’ll also expectedly get WP8 live tile support, as well as what Zinio describes as “improved text mode support” to make reading on a smartphone-sized screen a bit easier.
