Nokia Lumia Icon Spotted In Verizon Site

Nokia Lumia Icon Spotted In Verizon SiteIt has been quite some time since Verizon Wireless unveiled a brand new Nokia Lumia smartphone. Well, all of that patient waiting seems to have paid off, as the next handset from Nokia which will make an appearance on Verizon would be the Nokia Lumia Icon, whereby a page on Verizon’s website has already gone live albeit for a moment before it was taken down. The URL still exists at time of publishing, so you might want to check it out.

That particular page was spotted by a member of The Verge’s forums, and the page also did seem as though it confirmed that some of the rumored hardware specifications, including a 5” display, a quad-core 2.2GHz processor, and a 20-megapixel camera. There was also a $777 price tag attached to it, which is in all probability a placeholder instead of the actual handset’s price. Not only that, this would be the first smartphone in Nokia’s Lumia range that would also stop the numbered branding and take on an actual name instead. Could this very well be one of the last smartphones that will be churned out by Nokia before its Devices and Services division was sold on an official basis to Microsoft?

Nokia A110 Android Smartphone Shows Up On AnTuTu

Nokia A110 Android Smartphone Shows Up On AnTuTu

We have been hearing a lot of rumors about Nokia developing an Android smartphone, but so far no official confirmation has been made. There have been those rumors as well which claim that the project is dead due to the acquisition of Nokia’s hardware business by Microsoft. However it was recently said that speculation about the project’s death has been greatly exaggerated, and that its still under way. It seems to be, seeing how a Nokia A110 Android powered smartphone recently showed up on AnTuTu benchmark.

Now there’s not much information available about Nokia’s Android smartphone, supposedly codenamed Normandy. The benchmarks do reveal that it has a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 854×480 pixel resolution display, a 5 megapixel rear camera and Android 4.4.1 pre-installed. Now it doesn’t mean that the final device is bound to have the exact same specifications, but they do appear to be in line with what has been rumored over the past few weeks. Earlier today screenshots of the purported Android UI of the Normandy were leaked online. Nokia is said to be going with a highly forked version of Android OS, which would presumably have a very different design language when compared to most low-end Android smartphones. It is not know if and when Nokia plans to release the Normandy, so we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled. [Image via NPU]

Nokia Android Smartphone User Interface Purportedly Leaked

Nokia Android Smartphone User Interface Purportedly Leaked

There has been a lot of talk about Nokia building an Android smartphone, we have even heard theories that claim Nokia will ultimately drop the project as a result of the acquisition of its hardware business by Microsoft. With the amount of rumors frequently coming in, and even claims that the death of Nokia’s Android smartphone has been greatly exaggerated, it seems that perhaps the Finnish manufacturer just might release the much rumored device, apparently codenamed Normandy. Today the purported Android user interface this smartphone is expected to tout has been leaked online.

The screenshots come from @evleaks, who was also behind the “greatly exaggerated” bit. Skype and Viber apps are seen running in the screenshot, and one displays a lockscreen with notifications. There’s no way of saying for sure that this is the final user interface that will make the cut. It could be an earlier build from a long time ago in the development process. As per reports, the Normandy is expected to run a highly forked version of Android OS, kind of what Amazon has created for its Kindle Fire tablet lineup. There’s still no confirmation from Nokia that it is going to release the Normandy prior to the close of its acquisition by Redmond. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

32GB Lumia 1520 Rumored To Arrive On AT&T January 10

32GB Lumia 1520 Rumored To Arrive On AT&T January 10The Nokia Lumia 1520 is currently available via carriers and retailers but unfortunately it is only available in a 16GB version at the moment, although users do have the option of expanding its memory through a microSD card. However we guess there are those who might prefer using onboard memory instead and are finding 16GB not enough for their usage. Well the good news is that according to Windows Phone Central’s sources, it has been rumored that AT&T could be opening up orders for a 32GB version of the Lumia 1520 come 10th of January. However it seems that this offering will be only available online, meaning that you will need to purchase it from AT&T’s website as opposed to walking into their stores.

It has been rumored for a while that a 32GB version of the handset would be arriving soon, so we guess the 10th of January date isn’t completely out of the question. It is unclear how much more will Nokia/AT&T be asking for the 32GB version, but we’ll definitely keep our eyes peeled for more information. The 32GB model could also be of interest to those who store a lot of photos, videos, and music on their phones, especially since with up to 64GB of microSD card support, one could potentially have 96GB worth of storage on their device, but do check back with us on the 10th of January for the details!

Microsoft: iPhone Outsold By Windows Phone In 24 Markets

Microsoft: iPhone Outsold By Windows Phone In 24 MarketsNow, when you hear a particularly provocative statement such as the above, what kind of conclusion can you draw? For starters, does this mean that the iPhone is in big trouble, and Apple’s stock is going to slide on a downward spiral with no way of checking it in sight? Not really, and a whole lot of it depends on how you read the situation. Basically, everyone knows that Windows Phone has gained some grounds in the last year, especially with the entry level Nokia Lumia 520 and Lumia 521 handsets, while on the high end of the spectrum, there is the Nokia Lumia 1520.

Courtesy of the GDR3 update, Windows Phone OEMs are now able to construct a smartphone with equal specifications to the Android platform, which is good news. Not only that, Christopher Flores, director of communications for Microsoft, touts that Windows Phone happens to be the second most popular platform in 14 markets around the world, and in two dozen markets, it has started to outsell the iPhone. The thing is, we do not know which markets that Flores was referring to, although it is a no brainer that most of the growth happens to be heading its way from emerging markets as the iPhone has proven itself to be cost prohibitive.

Future Nokia Phones Rumored To Sport Snapdragon 805 Chipsets With 2K Displays

Future Nokia Phones Rumored To Sport Snapdragon 805 Chipsets With 2K DisplaysFor a while it seemed that Windows Phone devices lagged behind Android in terms of hardware. While Android OEMs where busy putting out phones with quad-core processors and HD/Full HD displays, Windows Phone devices were still trudging along with dual-core chipsets and sometimes less than HD displays. To be fair the Windows Phone operating system never really needed such high-end specs as it had been optimized for its hardware, but on paper and in terms of marketing, it did not look good. Well if the rumors from Nokia Power User are any indication, 2014 could be where Nokia starts to catchup and maybe even out perform their Android and iPhone competition.

Based on a tip from one of their trusted sources, it would seem that 2014 is the year where Nokia could start introducing more quad-core powered devices courtesy of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805 processor. Their source also claims that Nokia might make the jump to 2K displays, and even incorporate next-gen camera hardware that might sport 20-25MP sensors. Quad-core Nokia phones aren’t new, in fact they debuted last year with the Lumia 1520 which was also one of Nokia’s first Full HD devices. For Nokia to make the jump to 2K would definitely be a huge leap and does seem a tad sudden.

However based on what we know so far, there will be a few devices in 2014 to sport the revered 2K display, such as the Oppo Find 7, the Vivo Xplay 3S, and if the rumors are to be believed, even Samsung’s Galaxy S5 could sport a display with such high resolution as well. Of course rumors being rumors, do take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Do those rumored specs make Nokia’s Windows Phone devices more tempting?

Nokia Lumia 1520 Vs. iPhone 5s Browser Performance

Choosing a smartphone platform requires some careful decisions on the buyer’s part. After all no one likes wasting money on a platform they cannot truly enjoy, right? So what does one take into consideration when choosing a platform? Price, app availability, design, hardware, performance, and so on, and for those who surf heavily on their phone, having a fast and smooth browser is key, wouldn’t you say? Well it turns out that the Nokia Lumia 1520 could be the phone you are looking for, if browsing if your priority.

Thanks to a video that was uploaded not too long ago onto YouTube by TechCloud, it features the Lumia 1520 pitted against the iPhone 5s in what looks to be a browser performance and experience test. Both devices are either company’s flagship phones and both do feature some pretty good hardware, but as the video so tellingly reveals, it would seem as though the Lumia 1520 is better in terms of browsing when compared to the iPhone 5s. As you can see in the video above, the Lumia 1520 is faster when it comes to loading webpages, and does so almost immediately upon clicking, while Apple’s Safari browser took a second or two longer.

The experience when browsing websites also shows that the Lumia 1520 scrolled a little bit smoother compared to the iPhone 5s. While this does not look good for the iPhone 5s, the browsing experience has never really been a negative point in reviews and is pretty decent overall, but like we said when put next to the Lumia 1520, it is pretty telling. What do you guys think? Will the browser experience make you want to switch phones?

Nokia Normandy Android UI Apparently Leaked

Nokia Normandy Android UI Apparently Leaked

There’s one unreleased Nokia device that is consistently making the rounds in the rumor mill. It is believed to be Nokia’s first Android smartphone, which was believed to have been shelved. Earlier today a tweet from the infamous leaker @evleaks claimed that the reports of Normandy’s deaths have been greatly exaggerated, hinting at the possibility that Nokia just might release this device. We have now come across what is believed to be the Android user interface of this much rumored device.

The authenticity of this image can certainly be called in question, because fabricating an image like this isn’t too hard. Though its worth noting that the device seen above is actually quite similar to all of the press renders of the Normandy we have seen up till now. Judging by the icons on the status bar, the Normandy has dual-SIM support as well as Wi-Fi. Not much is known about the specifications of this device at this point in time, and its not known when Nokia intends to officially unveiling it. Perhaps the launch might take place prior to the close of the acquisition of Nokia’s hardware business by Microsoft. One thing is for sure though, Normandy’s rumors are certainly not dying anytime soon. [Image via ithome]

Nokia Kills Support For Symbian And MeeGo Apps

Nokia Kills Support For Symbian And MeeGo Apps

Over the past few years there have been a number of major changes at Nokia. The company diverted its attention from Symbian and MeeGo to focus exclusively on Windows Phone devices. It did end up clinching over 92 percent of the entire Windows Phone market, but the opted to sell its hardware division to Microsoft. Today the company has announced that its plan to kill support for Symbian and MeeGo app has finally been completed. The announcement was made through Nokia’s Symbian Signed Twitter account.

It was actually back in October last year when Nokia announced that come January 1st, 2014, it would no longer allow developers to submit new Symbian and MeeGo apps, and that they wouldn’t be able to offer updates for existing apps. The company made this move to focus its attention on Windows Phone as well as its Asha lineup, which has been particularly successful in emerging markets. Symbian and MeeGo were once Nokia’s biggest weapons in its arsenal, however due to the onslaught by rivals iOS and Android, the company opted to exclusively adopt Windows Phone for its high-end devices and kill off Symbian as well as MeeGo. Today’s announcement can be considered as the final nail in the coffin for those platforms.

Nokia Open To Google Discussing Possible Patent Settlement

Nokia Open To Google Discussing Possible Patent SettlementIn the tech space, companies such as Apple have taken on some of Android’s biggest players in the form of Samsung, and Nokia has been doing their part as well in their legal battle with HTC, but it seems that Nokia is willing to take on Google themselves (and Google’s subsidiary Motorola Mobility whom they acquired not too long ago) in a statement released by Nokia as part of their ITC filing, stating that they are willing to sit down with Google and discuss the “unauthorized use” of Nokia’s patents.

According to the statement, “If Google wishes to proceed with its requested meeting, Nokia will do so, as we have repeatedly told you. Indeed, Nokia’s Robert Gray explained in his October 25, 2013, letter to Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc.: ‘If Google is in a position to end the unauthorized use of Nokia patented technology in Android products, [Nokia] would welcome independent discussions with Google on that basis.’ Google has not taken Nokia up on that offer. Mr. Gray (or someone on his team) remains available to meet in Finland before the settlement conference deadline, if Google so desires.”

As it stands Nokia has been somewhat successful in their legal tussle with HTC and has managed to get several of HTC’s products banned in various parts of the world. Assuming Nokia decides to take things to the next level, they will be joining the likes of the Rockstar consortium in taking the legal fight to Google’s doorsteps.
