Nokia Asha 500, 502 And 503 Design Detailed

Nokia Asha 500, 502 And 503 Design DetailedThe smartphone market does not consist of just high end products, you know, as there is also the bread and butter of companies – that is, to roll out mid-range as well as entry level devices that will be affordable to the masses. Of course, one cannot deny that this would mean losing out on many of the features, but Peter Griffith, who oversaw the industrial design of the stunning new Nokia Asha 500, Asha 502 and Asha 503, claimed that this is the exact segment of the market that is “the most exciting and fast-moving” part of the mobile industry. Do you agree with him?

Griffith sees the new Nokia Asha 500, 502 (which we saw leaked a few days ago) and 503 was an opportunity to do something new with what many deem to be mundane. For instance, the Nokia Asha 501, which is the closest relation to the new family, marked the first time that Nokia delivered a monobody design to the Asha touch-screen family, being visually appealing as well as more robust. I guess not too many people give two hoots about mid-range and entry level product news, but these tend to sell most in volume, so it is nice to see companies do their best to innovate on the design. Nokia’s Here Maps service comes to the Asha 501, beta release available now for download

DNP Nokia's Here Maps comes to the Asha 501, beta release available now for download

The touchscreen Asha 501 Nokia unveiled back in May will now work with Here Maps, the company announced on its blog today. The navigation service is already available on Windows Phone 8, Firefox OS, Android and iOS, and its arrival on the Asha platform will boost that operating system’s more modest selection of apps. Available now as a beta release, Here Maps for the Asha 501 offers turn-by-turn navigation and real-time traffic information. It’s designed specifically for low-end smartphones without GPS on board, and Nokia’s post notes that the current version “is a starting point and we will improve the experience over time.” Upcoming changes will likely include improved satellite images, which the company says will soon be updated to a higher quality. Asha 501 users in select countries can nab the Here Maps beta via the source link below.

    Upcoming Nokia Asha Handset Spotted?

Upcoming Nokia Asha Handset Spotted?Nokia, the Finnish smartphone manufacturer who also makes plenty of dough thanks to the featurephone market, has introduced its Asha range to the masses before, which does not come with plenty of bells and whistles, but rather, just plain features to get you chatting. Well, they do seem to have a keen eye for developing the Asha series with the possible release of an upcoming Asha handset.

What you see above was sourced by the folks over at @evleaks, who have been pretty spot on for quite some time now when it comes to leaks. Do you think that this is a rather accurate depiction of a new and upcoming Asha model from Nokia? Or could the final device actually be different from what is depicted? Still, for a budget conscious customer, the overall design of the Nokia Asha handset that was shown is definitely worth every penny. Interestingly enough, the conceptual device’s home button design sports a “back” arrow, whereas the buttons on its sides come with just a simple circle.

Nokia Asha Special Edition Handsets Coming Your Way

asha edition Nokia Asha Special Edition Handsets Coming Your WayThe range of Nokia Asha handsets are not the ones to reside on the high end scale of things, but this does not mean that they do not sell. On the contrary, emerging markets and developing countries have a critical mass of the population that are unable to afford expensive smartphones, and will have to make do with the featurephone, leaving the Nokia Asha range to fill this niche rather well. How about adding some color to the featurephone scene with special editions of the Nokia Asha?

Recently announced by Nokia Conversations Russia, these special editions of the Nokia Asha will come clad in intricate silver and gold chrysanthemum prints, where the Nokia Asha 308/309 in black and silver retail for around $148 after conversion, while the white and gold Asha 311 is more expensive at approximately $164. These do seem to shape up to be pretty decent Valentine’s Day gifts, don’t you think so? Will they see action in other countries? Perhaps, but do not expect them to make a splash in developed and mature markets.

The Engadget Interview (captured with Lumia 920): Nokia CEO Stephen Elop on WP8 and beyond

The Engadget Interview Nokia CEO Stephen Elop shot with the Lumia 920

Do you know what’s better than one interview with Stephen Elop? Two interviews in one month. We’d barely recovered from yesterday’s bout of nostalgia when we were given the opportunity to sit down with Nokia’s CEO in his office at the company’s HQ. Better yet, we were allowed to record the discussion with a hand-held Lumia 920 prototype. The resulting video is remarkably stable. Full disclosure: the audio was recorded with a shotgun mic mounted on a Sony NEX-C3 camera.

We talked about HTC’s colorful “signature” Windows Phone 8X and 8S and what that means for the Nokia-Microsoft partnership. Next we asked if Nokia is planning to work with carriers to offer incentives for existing Lumia owners to upgrade to the company’s 920 and 820 handsets. Finally, we discussed the evolution of PureView imaging technology from the 808 to the 920 and how Nokia plans to combine these building blocks in the future. Hit the break for our video interview.

    FCC Fridays August 3, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we’ve gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!
