JBL Power Up wireless speaker hooks up with Lumia 920

Nokia has revealed a new speaker dock for the Lumia 920, the JBL Power Up wireless speaker, which can pair and stream with the Windows Phone 8 handset without wires. Unveiled alongside the Lumia 920 in NYC this morning, the JBL dock uses a combination of Bluetooth and NFC to pair and stream music, but can also recharge your phone while it’s playing.

On the top of the lozenge-shaped speaker there’s a wireless charging pad and radio set: hold the Lumia 920 close to the platform, and it automatically pairs and re-routes the audio through to the JBL. As we’ve seen in other Nokia speakers before, that happens on-the-fly even if you’re in the middle of playing a song.

Because of the 920 has wireless charging support too, and that’s built into the JBL, you can stream music without running down your battery.

There’s also Monster’s new Purity Pro headphones, announced earlier in the week, which also include NFC for pairing and Bluetooth for audio streaming.

Nokia: Over 7 million Lumia phones sold, 4 million last quarter

Fresh off of the official announcement for the new Lumia 920 that’s been hotly anticipated we are now hearing some additional details and numbers regarding Nokia‘s popular Lumia line for Windows Phone. While we haven’t heard actual sales figures before the Finnish phone makers revealed a bit of numbers earlier today.

Right in the middle of their Nokia and Windows Phone 8 event that we are covering live as we speak the details have been revealed by Nokia. They stated that they’ve sold roughly 7 million Windows Phone / Lumia devices to date — and more importantly that 4 million of those were sold last quarter alone.

Nokia also pointed out their devices are starting to sell well and gain traction in 54 countries and are now available on over 130 carriers. The numbers while not staggering high are a good sign of how things are progressing for Nokia. With their Q2 earnings report earlier this year we learned only 600,000 Lumia phones had been sold so things are looking up.

For now it’s safe to say Nokia and their Lumia lines is miles behind Apple and the iPhone, and Samsung over with Android but can Windows Phone 8 keep things improving? Stay tuned to find out.

Nokia Lumia 920 packs glove-friendly touchscreen

Nokia hasn’t forgotten its Finnish roots with the Lumia 920, using a new “super sensitive touch” display that can be used even if you’re wearing gloves. Unlike most capacitive touchscreens, which only recognize actual flesh in contact with them, the Lumia 920 has two different touch modes that are automatically switched between to suit what your fingers are wearing.

Normally, with bare fingers, the Lumia 920 works as a regular phone. When it senses the user is wearing gloves, however, it automatically switches into a more sensitive mode that allows navigation without you taking them off.

Nokia hasn’t said exactly how the system works, but we doubt most owners will care about those technicalities. Instead, they’ll be pleased to be able to pull out their phone when it’s ringing and not miss a call, or check an incoming text message without having to pull off mittens with their teeth.

More on the Lumia 920 here.

Windows Phone 8 introduces new Lens apps: Bing Vision, Photosynth and CNN iReport launching from the camera button

Windows Phone 8 introduces new Lens apps Bing Vision, Photosynth and CNN iReport launching from the camera button

The first new Windows Phone 8 feature to appear alongside Nokia’s Lumia 920 launch is the camera-augmenting Lens apps. Offering both in-house and third-party programs, (and no more zoom bar — pinch-to-zoom!), these will all launch immediately from the camera button. On stage, Joe Belfiore detailed a handful of the apps, encompassing Bing Vision (camera-based search), Photosynth, Blink, FXSuite, PhotoStrip and CNN iReport. FXSuite offers up a preview of your viewfinder in all your favorite token visual effects, which can capture an image, and then send you back to the single Lens app, or back to the Lens menu. As to be expected, all your photographic skills can be instantly transferred across to your SkyDrive-powered cloud camera roll — something that could be especially useful with the Blink app, which captures a burst of photos in one touch.

Nokia City Lens Augmented Reality gets official for Windows Phone 8

Nokia has just started unleashing the details on their upcoming Windows Phone 8 attack all starting with their new flagship Lumia 920. Along with plenty of other details we’ve seen throughout the week they also just officially announced Nokia City Lens Augmented Reality for Windows Phone 8 and the Lumia series.

Yup, Nokia has brought their ever expanding City Lens app and maps technology to Windows Phone 8 just like we reported on yesterday. To start they are showing it off on stage with their new Lumia, showing just how great the technology will work with their new flagship Windows Phone 8 Phone.

“Nokia City Lens provides the most intuitive way to explore the world around you.”

With Nokia City lens you’ll be doing more than just seeing directions or restaurants around you, instead you’ll be seeing them live all through the city lens which can be launched right from Nokia Maps simply by tipping your device up and looking upon the world. It was launched earlier this week in beta, and it looks like it will be arriving for more soon. With City Lens by Nokia you’ll be seeing more than the usual Augmented Reality app too. You’ll see names of restaurants, coffee ships and more, right on your Windows smartphones display.

That isn’t all either. Nokia also just announced that their popular and still growing Nokia Maps (in favor over Google Maps obviously) will indeed be combining augmented reality and City Lens. Nokia hopes that combining these technologies all to their new Windows Phone 8 options users can enjoy and explore their surroundings in a much more intuitive and human way.

We’ve seen City Lens before back when it was released in May so you’ll want to check out more details on it by clicking here. While we still aren’t sure if AR will ever hit the mainstream but for Nokia it is here to stay. Being officially announced and headed to Windows Phone 8 and more.

Nokia brings wireless charging to Virgin Atlantic lounges, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf

Nokia brings wireless charging to Virgin Atlantic lounges, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf

Nokia thinks you’ll like the wireless phone charging on your Lumia 920 or 820 enough to want to take it on the road, and to that end it’s striking a deal to bring the cable-free experience beyond the home. Both Virgin Atlantic’s lounge at Heathrow Airport and countertops at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in the US will let you top up your Windows Phone without having to hunt for a power outlet. We’re still waiting on details like the timing, but we’re glad to know that we won’t have to lug around our FatBoy Recharge Pillows just to keep living in Nokia’s vision of the future.

Nokia Fatboy charging pillow revealed for wireless Lumia 920 juicing

Nokia has partnered with Fatboy on a wireless charging “pillow” for the new Lumia 920, a compact docking platform to rejuice your Windows Phone 8 handset. Meanwhile, Nokia has also partnered with Virgin Atlantic, Coffee Bean, and Tea Leaf, which will see the “pillow” included in Virgin lounges and embedded into tables at the drinks chains.

Nokia has jumped in with the Qi platform for its charging system, which will mean the company’s system will be compatible with other Qi-based systems from other manufacturers. They’re still relatively rare, however, so Nokia is obviously hoping that it can kickstart the wireless charging industry as a whole.

Nokia is yet to confirm whether the Fatboy “recharge pillow” will be bundled with the Lumia 920, or sold as a separate accessory. There’s also a Nokia own-brand model, the Wireless Charging Plate DT-900.

Nokia Lumia 920 official: PureView Windows Phone 8 flagship

Nokia has officially announced the Lumia 920, its flagship Windows Phone 8 smartphone, complete with Carl Zeiss lenses and PureView camera technology. Inside, WP8 runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 chipset, while there’s wireless charging to cut the nest of cables. According to Nokia, even though there’s only an 8.7-megapixel camera inside, it will still deliver the best photos of any smartphone.

The 920 may not have the same 41-megapixels of the 808 PureView, but it does bring a new sensor and lens technology. It can smooth out hand-shake by a so-called “floating lens” system, which works for both stills and video. The latter is recorded in up to 1080p HD.

As for the screen, that’s a Pure Motion HD+ 4.5-inch WXGA higher-than-720p HD panel, with a curved glass cover and clad in a polycarbonate chassis that will be available in yellow, red, white, grey, and black. There’ll also be exclusive Nokia apps, and Nokia Maps integration including offline support with voice turn-by-turn navigation.

Meanwhile, Nokia City Lens will also be built into the Lumia 920, an augmented reality system which will float suggestions for restaurants, entertainment, and other options, on top of a real-world view of the scene ahead. Nokia Maps will also get augmented reality, triggering automatically when you shift the phone from looking ahead to looking down at your feet.

Inside, there’s a 2,000 mAh battery, which Nokia insists is enough for a full “average” day, and which can be recharged using the new Fatboy charging pillow. The dualcore 1.5GHz S4 processor is tipped to be up to 30-percent more battery-efficient than quadcores.

Nokia hasn’t confirmed pricing for the Lumia 920, but has said it will be available pentaband LTE and HSPA+ variants later in 2012.

Leaked photo shows Nokia Lumia 920 with five color options

Leaked photo shows Nokia Lumia 920 with five color options

Ahead of Nokia’s Windows Phone event, there’s been plenty of discussion about the Lumia 920’s PureView classification, and though the camera’s pixel count remains TBA, we’re still getting a few sneak peeks at the upcoming hardware. Yesterday, leaked press photos of a Lumia wireless charging pad suggested that the new phone will be available in yellow and red. Based on a tweet from EVLeaks today, it looks like the Lumia 920 will be available in a few additional shades: white, grey and black. EVLeaks previously tweeted pics of the Lumia 820 in seven different hues, so it looks like we’re in for a (ahem) colorful event tomorrow.

Nokia Lumia wireless charging pad breaks cover

Nokia Lumia wireless charging pad breaks cover

That was quick: we’d heard rumors through The Verge of wireless charging coming to the repeatedly leaked Lumia 920 alongside a pseudo-PureView camera, and the mysterious @evleaks has come through with what looks to be press photos showing the wireless charging pad in action. As long as they’re more than just wild imaginings, they reveal a puck-like surface that could juice up both the Lumia 920 and the less ambitious 820. We don’t know much more about the charger, although it’s expected to use Qi and wouldn’t limit the phones and pad to coupling solely with each other. We’ll know the bigger picture on September 5th; in the meantime, check after the break for a bonus picture showing both Windows Phone 8 devices with an unnamed Bluetooth headset (likely a Luna variant) that might join the charger in Nokia’s accessory line.
