Engadget Live: Join us at 4AM ET for an ‘ask me anything’ Q&A with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop!

Engadget Live Join us at 4AM ET for an 'ask me anything' Q&A with Nokia CEO Stephen Elop!

You may have since forgotten, but today was the original kick-off day for Nokia World 2012. With the big show canceled and the devices already launched, we instead opted to drop by the smartphone maker’s headquarters just outside Helsinki. We’re spending three days here in Finland, meeting with executives to get an inside look at the company’s next-generation smartphone lineup. Our first face-to-face is with Nokia’s chief executive himself, Stephen Elop, who has generously offered up 30 minutes to answer your questions. Because of the time constraints, we won’t be able to accommodate every request, but we’ll certainly do our best.

There are two ways to submit your questions: leave a comment below, or you can send us a tweet @EngadgetLive — once the session begins, we’ll only be able to accept messages through Twitter, and you’re welcome to ask questions before we start and as a follow-up to Stephen’s responses, as well. In order to accommodate the largest possible audience, we’ll be using our liveblog tool to post both questions and answers, so bookmark this page and hop on over there at 4AM Eastern tomorrow. As always, you’ll also find the local time just below. Now about those questions…

Nokia World set to preempt New iPhone with Apollo

If you’re living in the Microsoft universe and love their mobile strategy – and bright colors – you’ll be glad to know that it’s been tipped the Nokia will reveal their next generation of devices with Windows Phone 8 in September. During their next big event, Nokia World, both September 5th and 6th will be the home of a worldwide announcement of Nokia’s newest lineup, complete with Windows Phone 8 (Apollo) software onboard. This will put Nokia’s reveal just one week ahead of what’s generally been accepted as the must-be date for Apple’s next smartphone: September 12th for the new iPhone.

It’s strange to think that Nokia or Microsoft would place the event so close to even the possibility of a new iPhone, especially when Apple just last month noted that anticipation of the new iPhone was so high that it was hurting current iPhone sales significantly. Nokia is ready to come correct, on the other hand, still staying tough with their assurance that Microsoft is their best hope for a revitalization of their brand through the next few years.

This tip comes from Bloomberg where they’ve also mentioned the relatively unimpressive statistics that surround Nokia’s efforts with Windows Phone so far. Nokia sold just 600,000 Lumia devices (their current Windows Phone-toting lineup) last quarter in the USA according to the company itself – but they will not be deterred.

If Nokia is to have a successful second-wave launch of devices here near the Fall of 2012, they’re going to need to jump on board the “everyone” ship like Samsung has with the Galaxy S III. Thus far Samsung has done undeniably well with Galaxy S III sales after just two months of the device being on the market. A large part of the success of the Galaxy S III in the USA has been its near-simultaneous launch on five major mobile networks across the nation.

Nokia – make with the original Google dream for a smartphone and team up with everybody all at once! And if that doesn’t work – you know who has some software you might want to see!

Bloomberg: Nokia will announce Windows Phone 8 handsets at Nokia World next month

Bloomberg Nokia will announce Windows Phone 8 handsets at Nokia World

Bloomberg is reporting that, perhaps unsurprisingly, Nokia will bust out its Windows Phone 8 handsets at Nokia World 2012. The shows, which kick off September 5th, will tour various locations to drum up trade for the new kit. The news agency is also reporting that any revamped Lumia phones will be ready to purchase for the Holiday buying season — hopefully dropping close to the October 26th release date for Redmond’s newest OS. Unfortunately, Nokia isn’t giving anything away, saying that it “never comments on rumor or speculation,” but at least we don’t have long to wait.

Nokia to announce Windows Phone 8 devices at Nokia World?

Nokia World 2012Nokia has just started sending out invitations to its Nokia World 2012 event where the Finnish company is expected to unveil its upcoming Windows Phone 8 devices. According to the invitation, the event will be held on September 5-6 in Helsinki, Finland (no surprise there). For those of you who didn’t know, Nokia World is the annual event where Nokia shows off or announces new devices and since Windows 8 is expected to hit the market in October, it makes sense that we’ll be seeing Windows Phone 8 around the same time too.

Now all this is speculation, and for all we know Nokia could be announcing more Symbian phones – but that shouldn’t be the case. So keep your calendars marked and be sure to tune-in in about two months. We’ll keep you posted on what happens there. Any predictions to what Nokia will be showing off at Nokia World 2012?
