Barnes & Noble has announced that it’s going to leave manufacturing of its Color tablet line up to third party manufacturers.
When Barnes & Noble first announced the NOOK Color, that was all the way back in October of 2010, which frankly, is a pretty long way back to the past via the time machine – at least in terms of technology, 3 years is a pretty long time ago. The NOOK Color held the distinction of being the first popular 7” Android-powered tablet that was specially priced to move without breaking the $250 price point, where it ran on a highly customized version of the Android operating system that was specially designed to play nice with B&N’s app and book stores.
Needless to say, it did not take too long before hackers managed to figure out just how to load custom ROMs on the NOOK Color, and three years down the road, NOOK Color hacking still remains strong. In fact, you are now able to download nightly builds of CyanogenMod 10.1 for the NOOK Color, which lets you enjoy a custom version of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean complete with full access to the Google Play Store. That’s saying a whole lot you know, considering how other some handsets that were released even as late as last year will never see Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for that matter in its life cycle.

NOOK users may be avid readers, but they may also need their daily dose of inspiration, whether that’d be ideas for DIY projects or just entertaining photos. Barnes & Noble announced today that Pinterest is now available for NOOK devices, allowing you to browse through creations and other pieces of inspiration right from your NOOK.
Furthermore, the app will come pre-loaded for new NOOK devices starting today. However, it seems that the app will only work on the NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet, and the NOOK Color. For those who already have a NOOK device, you can download the Pinterest app right now, allowing you to resume pinning from on-the-go in no time.
Pinterest joins Facebook and Twitter as one of the handful of apps pre-loaded on NOOK devices. Claudia Romanini, who is the vice president of NOOK apps at Barnes & Noble, says that Pinterest has “long been one of” the company’s most requested apps, so we’re positive that most NOOK users will benefit greatly from the addition of Pinterest.
Barnes & Noble has been trying to get the NOOK series back on track recently, and the company is working slowly to accomplish that. They recently launched the NOOK Press self-publishing platform, as well as the ability for in-app purchases in order to reel in more bacon. The addition of Pinterest might not make great strides with the company, but it could put them in right direction.

Most folks would say that the iPad mini has been priced out of range from its target competitors – namely the Google Nexus 7 which was manufactured by Asus and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD. Well, the thing about tablets in the 7” segment is this – they’re priced to move, and Barnes & Noble wants to be in on the game as well with a recent announcement of a price reduction being introduced for their 8GB NOOK Tablet 8GB, 16Gb NOOK Tablet, and NOOK Color which will now retail for $159, $179 and $139, respectively, being made available at nearly 700 Barnes & Noble stores as well as hundreds of Barnes & Noble College Bookstores if you prefer to shop at brick and mortar outlets. For folks who are too lazy to go out and drive, there is always the option to make your purchases online.
Will this cause even more pressure on the iPad mini? Chances are not, as there will always be a segment of the population who would be willing to fork out more than normal for certain brands, and folks who want to maximize the number of features on their consumer electronics device for each hard earned dollar spent would settle for the aforementioned tablets, and perhaps with the price reduction by Barnes & Noble, so too, will they consider the NOOK Color and NOOK Tablet this coming holiday season.

IHS iSuppli: Apple iPad takes 69.6 percent of tablet brand market share in Q2, reader tablets take a bruising
Posted in: Today's ChiliAn earlier portrait of the second quarter’s tablet market share made it quite clear that the iPad was on a rebound, if it was ever in a slump to start with. All those numbers focused on platforms and not brands, however — we didn’t know how the individual makers were doing. If IHS iSuppli’s figures are on the ball, there’s even more of a discrepancy if you break down the period’s results by manufacturer. The iPad staked out 69.6 percent of tablet shipments in the spring. That wasn’t just an 11-point jump over a year earlier; it was a level of share Apple hasn’t had since the Motorola Xoom was just cutting its teeth early in 2011.
As for the rest? Transformer Pads kept ASUS growing, but it’s not a pretty sight if you’re making an Android reader tablet; both Amazon and Barnes & Noble shed roughly a point and a half each, which is no small amount relative to their size. Samsung also lost share by this after its deliveries of Galaxy Tabs mostly stayed flat. We’d add that there’s some wiggle room as to real performance knowing that units shipped and sold aren’t always one and the same. Most of these companies are leaving clues regarding upcoming tablet refreshes that might level the playing field, some not so subtle, but it’s currently Apple’s game to win.

Barnes & Noble cuts prices across its Nook lineup, vies for your budget tablet affection
Posted in: Today's ChiliIn what could be seen as a response to the positive reaction that Google’s $200 Nexus 7 has garnered, Barnes & Noble has just cut down the prices on all three of its Android-based, seven-inch Nook Tablets. The 16 and 8GB models have been respectively reduced to $199 (from $249) and $179 (from $199), while the Nook Color is priced 20 bones cheaper than before at $149. Not sure whether those prices too good to be true, even up against the likes of the Kindle Fire? Feel free to peruse our reviews of B&N’s reading-focused slates before potentially taking the plunge at its webstore.

DC Comics arrive on Nook Tablet, Barnes & Noble lets you watch, zoom the Watchmen
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhen we initially did our Nook Tablet / Kindle Fire battle royal, the choice between the devices for comics fans largely came down to the preference between the Marvel and DC universes. The lines, however, are blurring. Thanks to today’s announcement, Justice League fans should find as much to love in the Nook Tablet and Color as Avengers devotees. DC has brought more than 100 graphic novels to the aforementioned devices and Android tablets running the Nook app. Barnes & Noble also used the opportunity to announce the new Zoom View feature, which lets readers focus on individual panels — functionality that sounds fairly similar to what Comixology offers in its own popular app. For more information about Crisis on Infinite Nooks, check out the press release after the break.
