Amazon Kindle Fire HD Price Slashed By $20 For Mothers Day

Amazon is the manufacturer of one of the most sold mid-range Android tablet. Some people even say that the entire 7-inch tablet race was given a huge boost by the Kindle Fire, which has done very well for itself in the market. Recognizing that Mother’s Day 2013 is just around the corner, Amazon is running a promotion in which it is offering the Kindle Fire HD tablet for $20 less than its usual retail price. If you’re looking to pick one up, the 20 bucks saved could be put towards chocolates, flowers or any other gift that may make Mother’s Day a bit more special.

The prices for Kindle Fire HD 16GB and 32GB variants is $179 and $209 respectively, under this promotion. The discount can be availed by using the FIRE4MOM code during checkout. Amazon is running this Mother’s Day promotion till the 12th of May. Barnes & Noble also slashed Nook tablet prices for Mother’s Day and Amazon followed suit. So now there are two tablets from two different manufacturers that are going for less than they usually do. Which one will you be picking up?

Pinterest now available on Barnes & Noble NOOK devices

NOOK users may be avid readers, but they may also need their daily dose of inspiration, whether that’d be ideas for DIY projects or just entertaining photos. Barnes & Noble announced today that Pinterest is now available for NOOK devices, allowing you to browse through creations and other pieces of inspiration right from your NOOK.

Furthermore, the app will come pre-loaded for new NOOK devices starting today. However, it seems that the app will only work on the NOOK HD, NOOK HD+, NOOK Tablet, and the NOOK Color. For those who already have a NOOK device, you can download the Pinterest app right now, allowing you to resume pinning from on-the-go in no time.

Pinterest joins Facebook and Twitter as one of the handful of apps pre-loaded on NOOK devices. Claudia Romanini, who is the vice president of NOOK apps at Barnes & Noble, says that Pinterest has “long been one of” the company’s most requested apps, so we’re positive that most NOOK users will benefit greatly from the addition of Pinterest.

Barnes & Noble has been trying to get the NOOK series back on track recently, and the company is working slowly to accomplish that. They recently launched the NOOK Press self-publishing platform, as well as the ability for in-app purchases in order to reel in more bacon. The addition of Pinterest might not make great strides with the company, but it could put them in right direction.

Barnes & Noble reduces NOOK Tablet and NOOK Color pricing

NOOK ColorMost folks would say that the iPad mini has been priced out of range from its target competitors – namely the Google Nexus 7 which was manufactured by Asus and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD. Well, the thing about tablets in the 7” segment is this – they’re priced to move, and Barnes & Noble wants to be in on the game as well with a recent announcement of a price reduction being introduced for their 8GB NOOK Tablet 8GB, 16Gb NOOK Tablet, and NOOK Color which will now retail for $159, $179 and $139, respectively, being made available at nearly 700 Barnes & Noble stores as well as hundreds of Barnes & Noble College Bookstores if you prefer to shop at brick and mortar outlets. For folks who are too lazy to go out and drive, there is always the option to make your purchases online.

Will this cause even more pressure on the iPad mini? Chances are not, as there will always be a segment of the population who would be willing to fork out more than normal for certain brands, and folks who want to maximize the number of features on their consumer electronics device for each hard earned dollar spent would settle for the aforementioned tablets, and perhaps with the price reduction by Barnes & Noble, so too, will they consider the NOOK Color and NOOK Tablet this coming holiday season.

N2Acards to let Nook Tablet owners dual boot Jelly Bean in November

If Nook Color owners cast their memories back to last summer, they may remember Nook2Android: a microSD card that could let their Barnes & Noble e-reader dual boot Gingerbread and the hardware’s Android-based operating system. Now sporting the moniker N2Acards, they’re just about ready to give Nook Tablet (but not Nook Color) devices a taste of Jelly Bean thanks to Cyanogenmod. The cards come in 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB flavors and range from $30 to $90 in price, but you can download the OS image for $20 and load it onto a card of your own. While those who’d rather purchase the whole enchilada will have to wait until the cards ship on November 1st, folks who prefer the download can already load their slates with Android 4.1.

B&N reveals NOOK Video for movie and TV shopping

Barnes & Noble has revealed NOOK Video, its upcoming movie and TV show store for NOOK devices, smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones. Set to launch in the US this fall, with a UK debut by the holiday season, NOOK Video will offer both streaming and download options, integrating with the NOOK Cloud for viewing on multiple devices.

B&N will also launch NOOK Video apps – there’s no word on platform support, but a safe guess would be iOS and Android given the bookseller already offers ereading apps for those – which will support streaming content. There’ll be seamless resume too, allowing users to pause playback on one device and then pick up from the same place on another linked to the same account.

Those users with existing DVD and Blu-ray content will – as long as it falls under the UltraViolet umbrella – be able to access digital copies of those movies and TV shows through their NOOK device or the NOOK apps, without having to purchase a separate digital version. Both standard- and high-definition titles will be on offer.

HBO, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, STARZ, Viacom, Warner Bros., and Walt Disney Studios are all onboard with content for NOOK Video, though pricing for individual titles is yet to be confirmed. More partners are on the way, B&N says.

This week may belong to Amazon and whatever information the mega-retailer decides to drop on our heads tomorrow at its press conference in Santa Monica, but Barnes & Noble’s apparently won’t be letting the Kindle maker hog the spotlight for too long. We’ve been tipped off from a reliable source that there is, in fact, a successor to the Nook Tablet heading our way this fall. The device is said to be “super light,” while packing an “incredible display,” rocking 243 ppi. Industrial design on the apparently forthcoming tablet will be handled by Barnes and Noble favorite, Robert Brunner of Ammunition, who’s already got some Nook design under his belt. All of this is said to coincide with a brand new video store from the company, in an attempt, no doubt, to take advantage of the aforementioned “incredible display.”

That’s about all we’ve got for the moment, but we’re told more information will be forthcoming from more official channels soon.

Barnes and Noble sees sales surge, losses fall as quarter ends in profit

Barnes & Noble has had a quarter worth remembering, bringing in $1.5 billion and reducing its losses to $41 million — down from $57 million last year. Retail business was up, thanks to the closure of Borders branches and blockbuster sales of Fifty Shades of Grey, while College sales increased quarterly losses by $2 million to $14 million. While online sales fell 7.6 percent and the Nook business remained flat, the company saw digital content purchases skyrocket by 46 percent — and the company couldn’t produce enough GlowLight devices to satisfy demand. Wondering about the company’s tie-up with Microsoft? There’s still no news beyond that it hopes the new partnership will be up and running by the fall.

It may not have quite the catalog of Netflix (or the same HD quality), but Sony Pictures’ Crackle streaming service does have one big thing going for it: it’s completely free. It’s also found its way onto plenty of different platforms (most recently Windows Phone), and that run has now continued with its expansion onto Barnes & Noble’s Nook Tablet (but not the Nook Color). What’s more, while there’s no release date confirmed just yet, Crackle says that the app is “coming soon” to the Kindle Fire as well. It’s also revealed that the app has now seen 11 million downloads across all mobile platforms — a figure that may now see a boost not only from the new Nook app, but from the just-updated Android and iOS apps, which each boast a redesigned interface and support for TV playback via AirPlay or HDMI.

An earlier portrait of the second quarter’s tablet market share made it quite clear that the iPad was on a rebound, if it was ever in a slump to start with. All those numbers focused on platforms and not brands, however — we didn’t know how the individual makers were doing. If IHS iSuppli’s figures are on the ball, there’s even more of a discrepancy if you break down the period’s results by manufacturer. The iPad staked out 69.6 percent of tablet shipments in the spring. That wasn’t just an 11-point jump over a year earlier; it was a level of share Apple hasn’t had since the Motorola Xoom was just cutting its teeth early in 2011.

As for the rest? Transformer Pads kept ASUS growing, but it’s not a pretty sight if you’re making an Android reader tablet; both Amazon and Barnes & Noble shed roughly a point and a half each, which is no small amount relative to their size. Samsung also lost share by this after its deliveries of Galaxy Tabs mostly stayed flat. We’d add that there’s some wiggle room as to real performance knowing that units shipped and sold aren’t always one and the same. Most of these companies are leaving clues regarding upcoming tablet refreshes that might level the playing field, some not so subtle, but it’s currently Apple’s game to win.
