We Heart Nokia, But “We’re Less Excited About” A Nokia Android Handset, Says Microsoft

'normandy'

Microsoft is in the advanced stages of closing its acquisition of Nokia’s handset business, but in the meantime Nokia is reportedly working on Android devices. How does Microsoft feel about that? “They’ll do some things we’re excited about, and some things we’re less excited about,” said senior executive Joe Belfiore, to a room of chuckling journalists and analysts.

“We have a terrific engineering relationship with Nokia,” he noted. “We’ve done a bunch of excellent collaboration [on] products…We’re proud of the work we do together.”

Nevertheless, as many have rumored, bolstered by some apparently leaked images (such as the ones here), Nokia has also been spinning other plates, with the WSJ reporting that the so-called Normandy device coming as soon as later this month.

Why? As Natasha pointed out the other day, this wouldn’t be an official Android device but a forked version, along the lines of what Amazon and many Asian handset makers have created. The idea here would be that it could use the device to target specifically lower-end users who are not reachable at the lowest price points of Nokia’s Lumia devices, but are looking for a “smarter” device than the Asha line from Nokia. The handset, the WSJ reports, has been in the works from before the deal with Microsoft was set, and points to how, with with many engineers and others leaving Nokia through layoffs, there are still some wildcards in the pack.

Nokia Normandy/ Nokia X Release Date, News & Specs Round-Up

Nokia Normandy/ Nokia X Release Date, News & Specs Round UpWindows running on a Mac? Windows Phone running on a Nokia handset? An Intel processor in an Apple machine? All of these did sound extremely improbable at one point in time in the past, but this does not mean that they are impossible. I guess those are the modern day technological equivalents of the four minute mile, and right now we have the Nokia Normandy, also known as the Nokia X, which is an upcoming smartphone that is also rumored to run on Android operating system, which would make it a surprising first for the Microsoft-acquired Finnish company, especially when they have been the staunchest supporter of the Microsoft Windows Phone platform for so long.

Nokia Normandy (Nokia X) To Arrive In Half A Dozen Colors (Rumor)

nokia-normandy-lockscreen-viver-and-skypeIt was not too long ago when Vietnam’s largest online retailer listed the unannounced Nokia Normandy on its website, where they mentioned that this upcoming device will run on Android 4.4 KitKat as the operating system of choice, powered by a dual-core 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and boasts of support for Google Play, Google Now and a slew of the other Google services. @evleaks has revealed in a tweet that seems to depict the Nokia Normandy as the Nokia X, where it will allegedly arrive in half a dozen colors.

    Nokia Normandy User Interface Spotted

Nokia Normandy User Interface SpottedWe did get a glimpse of the Nokia “Normandy” just yesterday, but it seemed that there is more than meets the eye. After all, the leaked image yesterday featured the alleged device that lay on a wooden table, but this time around, here is the Android-powered smartphone that will actually depict the Android app launcher’s user interface for the very same device itself. Of course, there are many questions that can be raised, including the legitimacy of such a screenshot considering how it could very well be nothing but a placeholder. After all, the alleged leaked user interface does look rather primitive, and would not gain that much traction in this day and age, don’t you think so?

Nokia Normandy Could Be Android-Powered Device

Nokia Normandy Could Be Android Powered DeviceWhat you see above is an image leaked by @evleaks, and it has been touted to be the upcoming Nokia Normandy device. Leaked last month, very little was known about the Nokia Normandy, and the seemingly missing hardware shutter button, capacitive buttons and LED flash do point to this handset being an Asha device which is most likely produced to target emerging markets as well as those who are on a tight budget. The Verge’s Tom Warren has a different take on it though, as he has followed up with multiple sources, and has come away with the very real possibility of it being an Android-powered smartphone which is due for a release later next year.

An Android-powered device from Nokia? That does not sound quite right at all, especially when you consider how Nokia has been the champion for the Windows Phone 8 platform all this while, not to mention having it being acquired by Microsoft this year. Warren did share, however, that the Nokia Normandy could be an entry level Asha class handset that offers an alternative version of Android which will not be connected to Google services, giving Nokia a free hand to customize it according to its liking, pretty much in the same way Amazon has been doing with their Kindle Fire.

Mass Effect Normandy Baby Stroller: Reaper Babies Watch out!

It’s never too early to get your child into video games. You could seat them beside you as you play, dress them up like your favorite video game characters, even create flash cards that teach them about games and heroes. Another cool way is to build them an awesome stroller like this one here.

This Mass Effect baby stroller was recently spotted at GeekGirlCon ’13 and needless to say, this kid is the most popular on the playground. That stroller looks just like the Normandy and I bet it even goes faster than a normal stroller.

Any video game fan with a little kid wishes they had this to push their baby around in.

Feedly promises ‘seamless’ transition after Google Reader to its own backend

Feedly RSS service promises 'seamless' transition after Google Reader to its own backend

If you (like many of us at Engadget) are in a state of shock facing the end of Google Reader this summer, there may be an easy replacement. RSS app/service Feedly posts on its blog that it has been anticipating the shutdown of Google’s service for some time, and invested in building its own backend. Dubbed “Normandy” it is intended to be a clone of the Google API running on Google’s own App Engine, set to swap in on July 1st when the service ends. Even better, in the comments Feedly states it will open the API for other 3rd party clients once everything is stable. The only bad news? If you’re considering jumping onboard you’re not the only one — Feedly’s servers are pretty crushed right now, so you know, just test the waters out some time in the next few months.
