Hasta La Gadget!

As Sprint continues to play an epic game of LTE catch up, the Now Network has officially flipped the ‘on’ switch for its 4G customers in the Chicago suburbs of: Addison, Bolingbrook, Des Plaines, Downers Grove, Kankakee, Rockford, Joliet, Naperville, Palatine and Plainfield. Further expanding its not-so-mainstream LTE footprint are Gary, Indiana; Wichita Falls, Texas; New Bedford and Fall River, Massachusetts; and Hutchinson and McPherson, Kansas, too. While these aren’t exactly the big markets that many were hoping for, it’s good to see that America’s third largest carrier is expanding its next-gen coverage for the less populous parts of the country. As for you big city folks patiently waiting for Hesse and company to call your number, rest assured that you haven’t been forgotten. We’re just hoping that Softbank’s latest investment doesn’t encounter any additional delays during its LTE rollout, because delays are for the birds.

We can’t say we’re exactly surprised Sprint would be bringing its 4G LTE waves to one of the biggest markets on the West Coast, but there’s nothing like hearing it straight from the horse’s carrier’s mouth. Earlier today, Sprint announced its developing Long Term Evolution network will be hitting San Francisco (and some surrounding areas) in the “coming months.” That’s not it, however, as the Now Network also let it be known that it will be flipping the switch in more than 20 other new markets, including Fort Wayne, IN, Emporia, KS, Greenwood, MS, Joplin, MO as well as Napa and Petaluma in California. At this very moment, it’s unclear what Sprint’s definition of “in coming months” is, but at least folks living around these areas now have some reassurance that they, too, will be enjoying some faster speeds on one of those LTE-equipped devices. We haven’t heard much from the Now Network about upgrading its handsets with some Jelly Bean goodness, but see that picture up there? That leaked screenshot says that Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G owners on Sprint will be getting Android 4.1 on September 6th, which is tomorrow. So celebrate, Sprint customers — if accurate, that means that your Nexi will be the first stateside CDMA phones enjoying Mountain View’s latest buttery smooth mobile OS. Let’s just hope Big Red follows suit with a final release for its Nexus owners sometime soon.
