Posted in: Today's ChiliMEDIAS W – N-05E
This is a really interesting two-in-one gadget. It is like a smartphone that can be converted into a mini-tablet. It has dual screen that can be used when closed or when opened. It acts and feels like a normal phone when closed, but when open, it looks and feels like a mini tablet.
This is one of those interesting gadgets that keeps things interesting. It is fun to use and seems very functional at the same time.
Available from mid-April.

One of the highlights of Docomo’s roll-out of their 2013 “Spring Collection” was the Xperia Z Smartphone and Tablet pair. President and CEO, Kaoru Kato kicked off his product descriptions with these products and they were the centerpiece of the company’s product roll-out.
Designed to interact together as a pair in a seamless way, data, photos, etc. can be passed between each other easily and smoothly. Both are run on Android 4.1 and 100 Mbps Xi LTE, with a 1.5 GHz …
NTT Docomo unveiled its 2013 Spring lineup to a packed house of invited Japanese and technical press at the Prince Park Tower Hotel in Tokyo. They showed off and explained 12 new models that will launch, beginning on January 25th, with a lot of nice improvements over their current line-up of 16 models.
NTT Docomo President and CEO, Kaoru Kato, 7 months into his tenure at the position, gave a confident, nicely-paced, clear and concise presentation of the company’s lineup and vision of …
Dual-screen smartphones are few and far between, but NTT DoCoMo and NEC apparently think a pair of displays is better one one, hence the new clamshell Medias W N-05E announced in Japan today. Joining two qHD 960 x 540 4.3-inch screens with a hinge on the right, allowing the display on the rear to be twisted forward and make for an almost-square 960 x 1080 touchscreen.
Inside, there’s a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 processor paired with 1GB of RAM, running Android 4.1, along with a 2,100 mAh battery, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. The rear camera runs to 8-megapixels, and there’s a front-facer too; the 16GB of internal storage can be augmented with a microSD card (up to 32GB in size). Connectivity includes LTE.
It’s not the first time we’ve seen an NEC clamshell of this sort. A little less than a year ago, the company showed off a prototype of this very handset, though without any hardware details or, in fact, a working concept.
The two displays can be used as a single, stretched panel, or to run two apps independently. It’s also possible to flip the N-05E by 90-degrees and use the bottom panel as a sizeable touchscreen keyboard.
NTT DoCoMo claims the new phone will last up to 460hrs on LTE standby (up to 630hrs if on 3G), while talktime is up to 500 minutes on a 3G network. Of course, talking is a very different proposition from using two potentially-power-hungry displays, and you’ll have to accomodate a 12.2mm thick device in your pocket or bag.
That power issue is arguably what has prevented twin-screen phones from storming the market. Kyocera attempted it, with 2011′s Echo, and Fujitsu flirted with doubled-up displays even earlier, but battery concerns – and a shortage of apps to take explicit advantage of the extra screen – have kept the impact minimal.
NTT DoCoMo will offer the Medias W N-05E from April in Japan, though there’s no word on whether NEC will sell the smartphone elsewhere in the world.

NEC Medias W N-05E Hits Japan
Posted in: Today's ChiliNTT DoCoMo, one of the major carriers over in Japan, has just introduced their range of handsets that is set to color this spring, and the NEC Medias W N-05E is one of the more notable devices that would certainly be pleasing to the eye. This is not the first time that the NEC Medias W N-05E managed to garner the attention of the masses, as it appeared as a hollow mockup at Mobile World Congress in 2012. This NEC-manufactured smartphone will feature LTE connectivity, and boasts what could very well be a first in the industry – a pair of 4.3-inch LCD displays, but if you were hoping for Full HD displays, you would be disappointed as these carry resolutions of 540 x 960.
Underneath the hood, you will find a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 1GB RAM, an 8-megapixel camera at the back, 16GB of internal memory which can be further augmented by a microSDHC slot. When open, the Medias W N-05E will dish out approximately 5.6” in diagonal screen real estate, and measure around 64mm wide when shut. You will be able to use each screen independently of each other, or opt to work them together if more space is required. No idea on pricing, or whether we will see this beast arrive in other markets or not.

NTT DoCoMo announces 12 new mobile devices for the spring, launches Smart Home initiative
Posted in: Today's ChiliChange of season? You can bet NTT DoCoMo has an armload of new devices to announce — it’s almost a tradition. This time around, the Japanese carrier has revealed 10 new smartphones, two tablets and a mobile WiFi hotspot. Large, 4.5 to 5-inch displays and quad-core processors pepper the entire spring smartphone line, but there are a few notable standouts, including the previously leaked LG Optimus G Pro, Huawei’s Ascend D2 and the NEC Medias W — a curious dual-screen smartphone we first saw at MWC 2012. DoCoMo fills its tablet quota with the Sony Xperia Tablet Z and a carrier branded device called the dtab, a 10.1-inch WiFi slab apparently built for DoCoMo’s Smart Home initiative. Don’t let the name run away with your imagination — the Japanese carrier is focusing on sharing music, video and digital content between smartphones and other home electronics, not automating your apartment.
The dtab is compatible with a handful of carrier exclusive services, such as the dmarket and DoCoMo cloud. It’s not technically part of the carrier’s mobile line, but DoCoMo had one more announcement for spring: an HDMI dongle. The SmartTV dstick gives HDTVs access to the carrier’s dvideo, danime store and dhits services, and can be controlled with via smartphone or a similarly named tablet. Spring hardware will start hitting Japan on January 25th with the Aquos Phone EX, and continue to roll out through March. Read on for the official press release.

LG’s Optimus G Pro revealed in leaked image with 5-inch 1080p display, 3,000mAh battery and LTE
Posted in: Today's ChiliLG’s Optimus G won the hearts of our reviewers and finding the barely-different Nexus 4 is a feat worthy of a mythological hero — so here’s some exciting news. A tipster has sent us the above leaked slide, revealing that there’s a new(er) kid on LG’s block in the form of the Optimus G Pro. The 5-inch handset comes with an upgraded 1,920 x 1,080 display and is packing a 1.7Ghz Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064, 2GB RAM, 32GB Memory, LTE and a 3,000mAh battery — tallying with a separate leak we’ve spied on Blog of Mobile. Naturally, as it’s destined for Japan’s NTT DoCoMo, you’ll also find One-Seg and NOTTV functionality baked inside — which only adds to our complex that those in the Far East get all the best toys.

Back in December 2012, Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo reported that they had experienced the biggest loss in subscribers in the month of November, and they blamed the iPhone for it. For those unaware, NTT DoCoMo does not offer the iPhone on its network unlike its competitors KDDI and Softbank. Now it seems that the carrier is hoping to make up for that loss and has announced that they would be willing to negotiate a deal with Apple to ensure that the carrier will offer up the iPhone on its network as well. Some have speculated that this change in tune might be due to a report by the Telecommunications Carriers Association who reported that for the month of December 2012, NTT DoCoMo placed third in terms of subscribers with 235,100 net subs, with KDDI coming in second with 239,200 net contracts and with Softbank taking first place with 274,700 net contracts.
One of the stipulations that Apple has set in place for carriers to offer its iPhone would be that carriers have to sell a predetermined amount of iPhones every year, and NTT DoCoMo’s president Katoru Kato seemed confident that the carrier would be able to do so as long as the iPhone accounts for 20-30% of the carrier’s overall smartphone sales. Now if you’re living in Japan and your carrier of choice is NTT DoCoMo, don’t get your hopes up just yet as it seems that these negotiations are only in its preliminary stages meaning that it might be a while before a deal can be struck.

According to Japan’s Daily Yomiuri, NTT DoCoMo is parterning with Samsung to develop phones running the open-source Tizen operating system, with the first handsets reaching the market next year. According to the Yomiuri, other mobile carriers are also getting behind the development of Tizen because they “fear the hegemony” of Apple and Google. We’ve heard about Tizen as far back as September of 2011 — this Linux-based (and Intel-backed) software came about when Nokia’s MeeGo OS bit the dust, and we’ve already seen evidence of a Tizen-based Galaxy S III.
