Hybrid Porsche 918 Spyder beats Nordschleife track record by miles (actually, 14 seconds)

Hybrid Porsche 918 Spyder sets Nurburgring lap record

Porsche’s hybrid 918 Spyder did double duty this week, making its first public appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show and setting a world record at Nürburgring’s grueling Nordschleife circuit. Stuttgart’s pride burned around the North Loop at an average of 112MPH to finish the circuit in 6:57, a full 14 seconds faster than the previous record holder: the gas-burning Dodge Viper ACR. Check out the video after the break and you’ll discover that this Spyder is throaty — especially compared to those purely electric (and rather screechy) Formula E racers.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive breaks Nurburgring EV lap record

MercedesBenz SLS AMG Electric Drive breaks Nurburgring lap record

There’s no question that the SLS AMG Electric Drive is faster than most EVs. However, Mercedes-Benz wants to prove that the car is fast in any category — and it just broke a Nurburgring record to underscore its point. Merc’s 751HP clean machine recently ripped through the track’s Nordschleife section in 7 minutes and 56 seconds, beating a production EV record set last year by Audi’s R8 E-tron. While that lap time won’t rival the absolute EV record, let alone those of faster conventional cars, it puts the electric SLS firmly ahead of its peers. That may be all that matters for buyers picking up their cars this month: when you’ve dropped half a million dollars on a new ride, some bragging rights are in order.

Production R8 e-tron sets lap record at Nürburgring, Audi gains more EV bragging rights

Production R8 etron sets lap record at Nrburgring, Audi gets gains EV bragging rights

Suffice it to say, Audi’s been garnering loads of press these past weeks for its e-tron vehicles. Hot on the heels of its recent, R18 e-tron-led victory at the 24-hour Le Mans, the automaker has set a world-record for production EVs at Germany’s Nürburgring. Using an all-electric R8 production model, driver Markus Winkelhock zipped around the 12.92-mile course with a lap time of 8:09.099. For comparison’s sake, the fastest lap by a gasoline-powered production car of about seven minutes and 57 seconds is currently held by the Gumpert Apollo Sport — which just-so-happens to use an 700 hp (515 kW) Audi V8 motor. According to Audi, the R8 used is essentially identical to what will be released to the public later this year, featuring two electric motors that pump out 280kW of power and 820Nm of torque. That said, Autoblog notes that its limiter was set to 155 mph (250 kph) — when you can buy one it’ll be set to top out at 125 mph (200 kph). Hit up the press release after the break for all the details.

Update: We incorrectly mixed up mph with kph on the max speeds. We’ve adjusted the numbers.
