We knew it was coming and, with very little warning, it’s practically here. Samsung’s 4-inch, budget Windows Phone 8 offering — the ATIV Odyssey — is hitting store shelves and Verizon airwaves on Thursday January 24th for $49.99. Well, with a two-year contract and after a $50 mail in rebate, that is. So you’ll have to shell out $100 up front — a price that will likely become semi-permanent when the promotional period ends. While the WVGA screen and dual-core 1.5GHz processor may turn off the spec-obsessed, we’re sure its low price, LTE radio and pretty little tiles will win over at least a few shoppers. Everyone knows that Samsung is making a big Windows 8 push at IFA, but there’s new signs emerging that it might shake up its naming scheme in the process. We now know through SamMobile that Samsung has quietly snapped up a pair of trademarks with the Ativ badge that would let its branding venture beyond the Galaxy. Ativ Tab is the most conspicuous: unless Samsung is planning a shakeup of its Android slates, there’s a distinct chance we’re looking at the future name for one or more Windows 8 tablets. Ativ S is slightly more nebulous, although that very familiar oversized S raises the possibility of a high-end Windows Phone 8 smartphone like the Odyssey. Whether or not Samsung wields these trademarks later this week, or at all in the near future, is still up in the air — it may be holding on to names as a precaution rather than previewing a course of action. If the Ativ label makes its way into stores, though, it may give Samsung a much catchier (if not entirely intuitive) name for its Windows devices than Series 5 Hybrid PC.

If you’re looking forward to the upcoming Windows Phone 8 platform and the devices accompanying it, the folks at TmoNews have managed to get their hands on a screenshot that reveals the user agent string of a certain Samsung Windows Phone 8 device. Sporting the model SGH-T899, it has also been revealed that this device will be arriving on T-Mobile’s network and is also expected to play nice with the carrier’s upcoming LTE network.
Its specs have also revealed a 4.65” 1280×720 display, which makes us think that this could be none other than the Samsung Odyssey Windows Phone 8 device revealed in court documents back in July. For those unfamiliar, back in July and as part of the ongoing legal dispute between Apple and Samsung, two Windows Phone 8 devices were revealed – the Odyssey and the Marco, with the former sporting a Super AMOLED 4.65” display, a Qualcomm MSM8960 chipset, along with an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. At that time it was unclear as to which carriers these devices were destined for, but assuming the SGH-T899 is the Odyssey, it seems that T-Mobile subscribers have something to look forward to.

User agent profiles on the web aren’t always guarantees of what you’ll get in a future device, but this is one of those moments where we’d like the details to be true. A Samsung-made Windows Phone 8 device for T-Mobile, the SGH-T899, lines up closely with the higher-end Odyssey we’d previously only seen in a purported roadmap. Along with alluding to the OS itself through the presence of Internet Explorer 10, there’s a reference to the hinted-at 1,280 x 720 screen that you won’t find on any Windows Phone 7 gear. The profile even contains a suggestion of LTE support, although we’re still wondering whether or not this would be very aggressive futureproofing or just an incidental aspect of the possible Snapdragon S4 chip — Magenta isn’t flicking the LTE switch until 2013. At least the rumored fall release date gives us a comparatively short wait before we learn whether the Odyssey and T899 are one and the same, or real at all.

If you thought the Apple and Samsung legal tussles weren’t getting interesting enough, another filing has revealed that the father of all smartphones Galaxy has at least two Windows Phone 8 devices in the pipeline. According to the filing that’s been unearthed by The Verge, both are running on a dual-core 1.5Ghz Qualcomm MSM8960 chipset — which is currently Samsung’s chip of choice for LTE regions. The Odyssey looks set to be Samsung’s high-end Windows Phone, with a 4.65-inch high-definition Super AMOLED display and NFC ready for Microsoft’s own mobile payment plans. Meanwhile, the Marco will apparently forego the near-field delights and house a humbler 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED screen, for a presumably gentler price. According to the legal documents, both devices are gearing up to launch in Q4 of this year — after we’ve seen Windows Phone 8 in its entirety.
