Microsoft Office 2013 box art leaked

Brace yourself, Microsoft Office 2013 is coming, and you know that you cannot wait to make that upgrade if your finances allow you to do so. So far, the box art for Microsoft Office 2013 does seem to have leaked out – obviously before the official announcement happened. It does seem as though what was leaked resembled a clean and professional design, where it somewhat matches the overall feeling of Windows 8 – at least, vaguely. Do bear in mind that the box art remains as a symbolic item, as there is no disc within. Basically, one will have to download Microsoft Office 2013 if you want to enjoy it as soon as it is made available over the Internet, although folks who prefer something physical will just have to wait it out for slightly longer.

Folks who picked the current retail version of Office 2010 from October 19th can receive a free copy of Office 2013 when it starts to ship in the first quarter of next year. Of course, just as a refresher, folks who picked up a new Windows RT-based hardware product on or after October 26th will also be able to enjoy a “preview” version of Office 2013.

DNP Microsoft launches $80 Office 365 University fouryear subscription for highereducation students

Microsoft’s given Xbox love to PC-buying students recently, and it’s just announced that it’ll carry on that tradition with Office 365 University, by offering a special four-year, $80 subscription to higher-education students. For that sum, you’ll get four years of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access if you’re seeking a sheepskin scroll, which Redmond says works out to $1.67 per month. Also included are 60 Skype world minutes per month and 27GB of Premium SkyDrive storage, along with free upgrades and the ability to install on two separate computers, to boot. That should take some of the sting out of those scholarly expenses if you need a copy, so check the source to see how to grab it.

Office 2013 goes gold

Microsoft’s Office 2013 has not yet hit the mass market, but that does not mean it is not too far off in the future. In fact, according to Office Vice President Kirk Koenigsbauer, he did announce the software’s official “Release to manufacturing” (RTM) status on the Office News blog, and threw in some sweeteners in the form of release date information. To put it in a nutshell, Office 2013 has already gone gold, meaning it should be more than ready to hit the market at a specified date. Business customers will be the more privileged ones, as they will be able to get first dibs on the RTM software, being allowed to download Office 2013 in addition to SharePoint 2013, Lync 2013, and Exchange 2013 thanks to Microsoft’s Volume Licensing Service Center from the middle of November onwards.

As for TechNet and MSDN subscribers, those who fall under that category ought to be able to download such software when it happens, and Office 365 Enterprise is slated to receive an update within a similar time frame. As for the ordinary man on the street, one will just need to be a wee bit more patient, as Office 2013 will only be made available to the masses sometime within Q1 2013.

Break out the party streamers and balloons — if only in an orderly fashion, because this is the day Office 2013 has been released to manufacturing. The completion swings Microsoft’s attention towards a rollout staggered over the next few months. Wider availability will have to wait until the first quarter of 2013 — such synchronicity with your branding, Microsoft — but companies who’ve sprung for volume licensing will get access as early as mid-November to December 1st, depending on whether or not they’re embracing a Software Assurance plan. In the meantime, Microsoft is offering an easy path for anxious workers by promising a free copy of Office 2013 to everyone who buys Office 2010 from October 19th onwards. The upgraded software might not be cheap for those who aren’t already buying a Windows RT tablet, but it’s likely to be an important piece of the puzzle for anyone hunting down a touchscreen Windows 8 PC.

Office 2013 receives RTM status

The engineering team over at Microsoft just signed Office 2013 into its Release to Manufacturing (RTM) build. As of now, the coding and testing phases for the application are complete, and it is being moved into distribution. According to Microsoft, it is the most ambitious version of the Office suite to date, and is the first to be optimized for touch devices.

Office 2013 will include all of Microsoft’s Office applications, cloud services, and servers. It has a new design that – much like Windows 8 – has been optimized for touch devices. Says the official Office blog, “[Office 2013] unlocks modern scenarios in social, reading, note-taking, meetings and communications.”

What’s next? Office 365 Enterprise customers will receive new features with the next service update beginning in November. Those with an MSDN or TechNet subscription will be able to download the final version by the middle of November. Finally, individuals with Software Assurance will be able to download Office 2013 via the Volume Licensing Service Center by the middle of November.

As of right now, the plan is to have Office 2013 on retailer shelves in Q1 of next year. Beginning October 19th, anyone who buys Office 2010 from a local retailer or reseller will be able to get Office 2013 free of charge. After the Windows 8 launch later this month, those with Windows RT devices will be able to preview the new Office.

Czech Microsoft manager claims Office 2013 will reach Android and iOS, rest of company is less certain (update: more direct denial)

Microsoft Office for iPad rumor

The story of Office for the iPad has been something of a rollercoaster. Depending on who you’ve talked to this year, the mobile app has been on, then off, then on again… if it was ever real to start with. Imagine our surprise, then, when IHNED says Microsoft Czech Republic product manager Petr Bobek “confirmed” native Android and iOS ports of Office 2013 during a press conference. The Office division higher-up reportedly outlined a strategy where the productivity suite would reach Windows for large businesses and individuals in December and February respectively, but would reach “other platforms” later on through more than just mobile-optimized web versions. It sounds promising, but we have reason for skepticism — assuming the testimony is accurate, there’s still a history of employees at Microsoft and other companies overstepping their boundaries without direct guidance from the corporate mothership. We reached out to Microsoft ourselves, and a spokesperson gave us a relatively conservative answer. While the company reiterated statements that “Office Mobile will work across Windows Phones, Android phones and iOS,” it added that there was “nothing additional to announce” regarding Office’s retail availability. As much of a glimmer of hope that might represent for some Android and iOS fans, it doesn’t equate to a direct Office 2013 port with a release schedule.

Update: To underscore its point, Microsoft has issued a further statement that casts doubt on the very remarks in question. “The information shared by our Czech Republic subsidiary is not accurate,” a spokesperson told us. “We have nothing further to share.”

Microsoft Office 2013 for iOS and Android confirmed by product manager [UPDATE]

Earlier today at a press event in the Czech Republic, Microsoft product manager Petr Bobek confirmed that the company’s next Office suite version, Office 2013, is coming to iOS and Android in March of next year. A press release from Microsoft’s Czech Republic team also mentioned that Office 2013 is coming to Windows Phone, Windows RT, and Symbian.

We ended up seeing Office for iPad in the wild back in February, but Microsoft was pretty quick to deny the leaked images. Later in May, we got word that Office for iPad actually existed and that it was going to be released in November 10 as “Office Mobile”. It looks like it’s finally been confirmed, though, by the company itself.

UPDATE: This news has been squashed – sort of – by Frank X Shaw, lead corporate communications for Microsoft, who simply said: “The information shared by our Czech Republic subsidiary is not accurate. We have nothing further to share.” This doesn’t necessarily mean that Office wont hit iOS or Android, but that the release information shared today isn’t perfect.

The press release states that Office 2013 will be made available to businesses starting in December, and consumers will be able to grab it towards the end of February. Microsoft says that “Office 365 services and other Office products for mobile (phones and tablets) will be released from March 2013.”

A Microsoft spokesperson from the US has neither confirmed or denied the availability of Office 2013 on mobile devices starting next year, only stating that the company hasn’t announced it yet. The spokesperson continues by stating, “We have said previously Office Mobile will work across Windows Phones, Android phones and iOS.”

Microsoft announces Office 2013 and 365 pricing, nudges users towards annual subscriptions

Microsoft nudges households and small businesses towards subscriptions with Office 2013, 365 pricing

While we still don’t know exactly when Microsoft will unleash Office 2013 and Office 365 upon the world, we do know how much they’ll cost. While standalone versions, licensed for use on a single computer, will still be available, the new strategy makes it more affordable for many homes and business to opt for a subscription package instead. Office Home and Student 2013 (with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote) will cost $139, while Home and Business adds Outlook for $219, and the top of the line Professional package includes all of those along with Access and Publisher for $399. Compare those to the two Office 365 packages, which promise customizations that follow their users around, expanded cloud storage, access to all of the apps and automatically receive any future updates that come out for them.

Office 365 Home Premium will cost $99 per year, with 20GB of SkyDrive storage and 60 minutes of Skype calling per month and access on five computers, along with the ability to change out the devices at any time, and use “full featured apps” temporarily on any PC. It’s a single subscription for up to 5 users, and will have a 30 day free trial available. Alternatively, small businesses with 1-10 employees could opt for Office 365 Small Business Premium that also comes with all the apps, but lets each user install it on up to 5 different PCs or Macs, along with 25GB Outlook storage, an organization-wide 10GB cloud drive plus 500MB for each user, online meetings and even website hosting. That also has a free trial, but costs $149 per user, per year. If you can’t wait, buying Office 2010 or Office 2011 for Mac as of October 19th entitles users to a free upgrade to Office 2013 or one year of Office 365 free.

Clearly, Microsoft would prefer it if users took advantage of the new pay-per-year offerings, but what do you think? Check out all the details from Microsoft’s blog and check list linked below (or our preview) as well as a few of their examples after the break, and let us know if you’ll be upgrading or switching over to an alternative like Open Office.

Microsoft reportedly starting Office 2013 upgrade program mid-October

As Microsoft ramps up for its next big Office release, the company is apparently getting ready to offer up a program to help cushion the blow for those who pick up the current version of the suite. ZDNET is reporting that Redmond will begin its Office 2013 upgrade program on October 19th, keeping with its policy for past Office and Windows releases, ensuring that those who pick up the software between that date and the end of April get the upgrade. The word comes from some anonymous sources, so there’s no guarantee here — there’s also no info on whether the upgrade will be fully free or will have a small fee attached. We’re still not quite sure when Office will officially be hitting the market, but the site’s sources put it at around February.

Windows RT tablets to arrive with Preview versions of Office 2013 RT

For Microsoft consumers, all roads lead to the day when the Redmond-based tech giant will officially release its first line of Windows 8 and Windows RT devices. While everyone waits for that day, we are hearing reports that Microsoft is planning to strip off certain features of its Office 2013 for Windows RT devices. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans are saying that the company will be shipping a Preview version of Office 2013 for Windows RT tablets later this year, with the option to update to the full version of the productivity suite sometime next year.

The reason for this, according to the sources, is to ensure that the battery life and reliability of Microsoft’s Windows RT tablets will not be affected. Among the features that will be reportedly excluded from Office 2013 for Windows RT are macros, third-party add-ins, VBA support, and a small number of other features. Microsoft has to yet to comment about the report, although a company spokesperson said that the packaging has not yet been finalized.
