Microsoft has announced the release of the newest Office Web Apps, which are now available via SkyDrive. Until now, the Office 2013-ish apps have been in preview mode since July, with 750,000 testers giving it the run through. According to the announcement, the Office Web Apps were “fine-tuned” for Windows 8, IE10, and iOS 6.

The Office Web Apps include Word Web App, Excel Web App, PowerPoint Web App, and OneNote Web App. Documents render 30% faster than before, and Microsoft promises that Office Web Apps and standard Microsoft Office applications play well together and are fully compatible. Sadly, Office Web Apps includes mostly basic features, lacking a lot of the more advanced features you find in its desktop software counterpart.

The Word Web App includes new support for adding and viewing comments, and has new page layout and picture tools. PowerPoint Web Apps has gained video playback support, allowing users to view videos from tablets and smartphones, as well as new comment and co-authoring support. In OneNote, you’ll find the added ability to search either an entire page or just a section, as well as new ink viewing support. In Excel Web App, you can “now print right from your browser and rename or add sheets as you need.”

Office Web Apps were first launched in 2010, allowing users to utilize Office from their Web browsers. Updates include expanded support for touch-friendly editing, additional formatting controls, and “consistent co-authoring/collaboration support across web apps.” You can get the new Office Web Apps from Outlook.com and via SkyDrive.

Having already conquered over 70 countries in its relatively short history, CloudOn decided it was now time to make its handy cloud-based tools available to all Android and iOS users around the globe. Aside from announcing its worldwide invasion, CloudOn’s also outed version 2.5 of its application on Google and Apple’s mobile platforms, bringing with it a slew of new traits into the mix — among these are a FileSpace for “real-time context around any document,” the ability to add single-tap annotations to Word, Excel or PowerPoint files, an all-new ribbon that’s enhanced for tablet use and, naturally, universal language support. It’s worth noting that while all of these novel features will be available on Android / iOS at some point, the former two are currently only compatible with Cupertino’s devices — however, CloudOn has told us the missing goods will be making their way to the other side very soon. Earlier today at a press event in the Czech Republic, Microsoft product manager Petr Bobek confirmed that the company’s next Office suite version, Office 2013, is coming to iOS and Android in March of next year. A press release from Microsoft’s Czech Republic team also mentioned that Office 2013 is coming to Windows Phone, Windows RT, and Symbian.

We ended up seeing Office for iPad in the wild back in February, but Microsoft was pretty quick to deny the leaked images. Later in May, we got word that Office for iPad actually existed and that it was going to be released in November 10 as “Office Mobile”. It looks like it’s finally been confirmed, though, by the company itself.

UPDATE: This news has been squashed – sort of – by Frank X Shaw, lead corporate communications for Microsoft, who simply said: “The information shared by our Czech Republic subsidiary is not accurate. We have nothing further to share.” This doesn’t necessarily mean that Office wont hit iOS or Android, but that the release information shared today isn’t perfect.

The press release states that Office 2013 will be made available to businesses starting in December, and consumers will be able to grab it towards the end of February. Microsoft says that “Office 365 services and other Office products for mobile (phones and tablets) will be released from March 2013.”

A Microsoft spokesperson from the US has neither confirmed or denied the availability of Office 2013 on mobile devices starting next year, only stating that the company hasn’t announced it yet. The spokesperson continues by stating, “We have said previously Office Mobile will work across Windows Phones, Android phones and iOS.”

Hey, when you have a new baby you have to make some major sacrifices. Less video games, maybe free up some room in the home. Stuff like that. IKEA Hacker Ian from Los Angeles had to give up his home office when a new baby was on the way. Well, he took it as a challenge and created an impressive mobile home office built out of IKEA pieces.

Ian took an IKEA stainless steel kitchen work table, some IKEA computer tower desk trays, two steel tabletops, and two grated steel shelves and made a mobile “office” that could be packed away into a closet when not in use. Judging by the images, he did an awesome job. You can check out a more detailed image of the entire build here.

Well done Ian. How much do you want to bet this thing turns into a diaper changing table as well?
