HTC One developer and unlocked models start receiving Android 4.4 KitKat in the US

HTC's Peter Chou wants you to have KitKat

If you were bold enough to buy a Developer Edition HTC One or its unlocked sibling, today is your lucky day. HTC’s US division has announced that it’s rolling out an Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade to both One variants, weeks ahead of the expected update for carrier-locked models. Sense 5.5 should also be a part of the package. While the KitKat upgrade isn’t reaching these units as quickly as it did for the Google Play Edition, it’s safe to say that many One owners will have another reason to celebrate this Thanksgiving weekend.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition scores Android 4.4 KitKat update

If you own a Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play edition, you can now put down your pitchfork and stop dripping with envy. Apparently, Android KitKat is also gracing not only the Sense-less version of HTC’s One today, but also the non-TouchWiz device. When the phone getting Android 4.4 in its purest form, you can look forward to all the features the updated platform promises, including a better camera app and longer battery life. The update should soon be available for download via Settings — if it’s yet to arrive, that is — those who own a version of the Galaxy S4 with all of Samsung’s software tweaks will have to sit tight a while longer.

HTC One Google Edition handsets now getting official Android 4.4 KitKat updates

Earlier today, HTC posted the Android 4.4 KitKat kernel source and framework files for the HTC One Google Play Edition, which usually means an official OTA update is imminent. Sure enough, a user on XDA Developers has now reported that he’s received the update the safe way, over-the-air. That means you’ll soon see the more streamlined interface if you’re rocking the Sense-less device, though some waiting may be required if the rollout is staggered. Other benefits you’ll notice will be a better camera app with its own shortcut, improved battery life and more speed overall. Meanwhile, owners of the regular HTC One should get KitKat skinned with Sense in January, at least in the US and UK. If you went for the Google Play Edition, you can check your settings for the update or, if you’re feeling brave, download it at the “More Coverage” link after the break.

Update: Voice activated search using “OK, Google” from the homescreen is only available on the Nexus 5 with the Google Experience launcher. The post has been updated to reflect that.

HTC One to receive KitKat upgrade in North America and UK by late January

HTC's Peter Chou loves his KitKat

HTC promised that One owners would get Android 4.4 KitKat within 90 days of the OS’ announcement, and it’s now detailing when specific countries will get their turn. The company’s North American and UK branches both say that they will start upgrading Ones to KitKat by late January, or right at the tail end of the 90-day window. There isn’t any word regarding the upgrade schedules in other large countries. However, Droid DNA fans won’t be left — HTC says they should get KitKat by the end of first quarter, or no later than March.

The Fitbit Force Hands-On: Ahh, This Is More Like It

The Fitbit Force Hands-On: Ahh, This Is More Like It

Fitbit did a lot of things very right when it made the One, its tiny activity-tracking pod. But then the company—caving to peer pressure from the likes of Nike—made the Fitbit Flex wristband. There’s nothing wrong with that form-factor, but the Flex lost a lot of the functionality that made the One so great, and it felt like a big step backwards. Today the company is releasing the Fitbit Force, and it’s exactly what the Flex should have been.

HTC must alter chip in One smartphone to avoid Nokia patents

HTC must alter chip in One smartphone in order to avoid Nokia patents

Poor HTC. As if it didn’t already have enough to deal with, the troubled manufacturer now has to meddle with the original design of the One and other smartphones in order to avoid infringing on a couple of Nokia patents. According to the Wall Street Journal, HTC is currently working with Qualcomm to find a different method of improving reception and transmission within its radio components, following a successful patent suit by Nokia in the US a week ago. If these tweaks don’t happen, and if the ITC upholds Nokia’s victory when it considers the matter in January, a number of models could potentially be subject to import bans. This has happened before, however, when HTC unwittingly infringed on a Nokia microphone patent and quickly managed to find a workaround, so by now it has become adept at this sort of fire-fighting and says it already has a plan to avoid “business disruption.”

Gold-colored HTC One part leaked in China, we’re sensing a trend here

Goldcolored HTC One part leaked in China, we're sensing a trend here

We’re usually quite skeptical when it comes to leaked phone parts, especially those that just show a new color, but this one seems fairly reliable. Courtesy of the same Sina Weibo user who previously showed us a blue HTC One (which has since been announced along with its mini counterpart), we’re now looking at what appears to be the front-half of a gold-colored One. Call it impeccable timing, but given the August 12th date stamp on the part, chances are HTC also had this planned some time ago. In fact, a 24-Carat gold One already exists.

In addition to the leakster’s track record, the hand-written marks on the parts lend credence to their authenticity. The One series’ designer Justin Huang (who’s sadly in a bit of trouble right now) previously told us that the letters grade the form of the front-side frame, in order to help pick matching parts. It’s also worth pointing out that we’ve yet to come across any fake custom HTC One parts in the Huaqiangbei market, which is likely because of the difficult manufacturing and disassembly process. That said, the phone’s relatively lower demand than, say, the iPhones and Samsung devices may be a bigger deterrent for those part makers. Let’s see if this new color option will change HTC’s course.

Verizon’s blue HTC One trickling out to Best Buy stores starting today

Verizon's blue HTC One trickling out to Best Buy stores starting today

See that? It’s an HTC One, programmed for use on Verizon’s airwaves, and it’s blue. Moreover, it’s at Best Buy, and if you’re lucky, you’ll be able to pick one up yourself as early as tonight. If you’ll recall, we had heard that Sprint was aiming to ship the aforesaid device on September 10th, but according to our tipster, these are hitting backrooms as we speak. Full retail is pegged at $699.99, but you can bet that a variety of contractual options will be available, too.

Update: Another stellar tipster has provided us with a photo of the phone’s front, which you’ll find after the break. Additionally, we’re told that the back of the blue HTC One is one full piece of metal, with painted accent stripes. Maybe you’ll head to a Verizon store this weekend and check it out for yourself.

HTC’s ex-lead designer may have leaked info to China’s Chengdu government

HTC's exlead designer is a jerk

The latest development on the recent HTC saga reveals that Thomas Chien, the arrested ex-VP of Product Design, was possibly lured by the Chengdu municipal government to set up a phone company in China. According to Taiwan’s Next Magazine (pictured above by sister publication Apple Daily), Chien flew to Chengdu several times in the first half of this year, which got HTC suspicious since it doesn’t have any direct business there.

The alleged offer was that if Chien left HTC with some of the technology plus some money, then the municipal government would — through another company it set up — take care of the remaining costs for opening the factory, production and marketing. Previous reports say while still at HTC, the ex-exec had e-mailed some confidential Sense 6.0 files to external contacts, but there’s no confirmation on whether those people are linked to the Chengdu government.
