Keep Track of Your Memos and To-Do Lists by Emailing Them to OneNote

I’ve always maintained that OneNote is Microsoft’s most under-rated product. Now, the recently untethered (from Office) and free (hallelujah!) app has added a capability that makes using it even better: You can email important notes directly to your OneNote notebooks.

To set it up, all you need to do is click through to Email Settings on OneNote.com and sign in with the Microsoft account that’s associated with the OneNote notebook you want to use. By default, you’ll see the email address you just signed in with. If you want to add more addresses, you’ll need to add them as aliases in your Outlook.com account. Hit save and you’re done.

To email notes into your default notebook, just send an email to me@onenote.com from any of the email addresses you just configured and watch the note appear as a new page in your Quick Notes section. It’ll work like this: The email subject becomes the title of the note, and whatever is in the body of the message becomes the note itself. If your email has graphics and rich text, those will all be preserved as well.

You can use this functionality to quickly email to-do lists directly into your OneNote notebook, for instance, or forward maps, itineraries, and flight tickets from your email to OneNote for your next vacation. Very, very handy.

Microsoft “Strongly” Encouraging OEMs To Bundle OneNote With Windows 8.1

Microsoft Strongly Encouraging OEMs To Bundle OneNote With Windows 8.1Many years ago, there were some who were outraged that Microsoft bundled Internet Explorer with every copy of Windows where they were accused of monopolizing the browser market, which at that time consisted of fewer players than there are today. Could Microsoft soon be landing themselves into another similar predicament with Windows 8.1?

According to a leaked memo, it seems that Microsoft has recently begun to share the Windows 8.1 Update 1 with OEMs to allow them to install it onto their products before it is shipped to consumers, thus saving the user’s time from downloading the update themselves. However according to the leaked memo, it seems that Microsoft is also “strongly” encouraging OEMs to bundle the company’s OneNote app together with the update. (more…)

OneNote For Android Updated With Multi-Window Support And New Widget

OneNote For Android Updated With Multi Window Support And New Widget

There’s no shortage of note taking applications, you can find apps from unknown startups to apps from companies like Microsoft. The company has released an updated OneNote app for Android which comes with a couple of new features. It says that this latest update is all about speed, enabling users to get more things done in less time. They have focused on making it faster to capture and access notes.

A share button for the app has been added browsers like Chrome and RSS readers through which users can instantly add “anything from anywhere” to OneNote. The app will store that content and even make it available across all of the users’ devices. Those who want to only capture what they see on the screen can simply send a screenshot to the app, it works with articles, webpages, images, videos and files. As previously mentioned, the app also supports multi-windows now, a feature that’s found on devices like the Galaxy S3. Users will be able to launch the OneNote app alongside another app and work on both at the same time. The update brings a new OneNote Recent Widget on the device’s home screen through which users will have quick and easy access to all of their recently accessed notes. They will also be able to add a page, section or notebook of their choice to the home screen. The OneNote app for Android is live now and available for download through Google Play Store.

OneNote App For Windows 8.1 Gets New Features

OneNote App For Windows 8.1 Gets New Features

Microsoft today rolled out a major update of its OneNote app for Windows. The updated app comes with a host of new features, improvements have particularly been made to the app’s ability to capture, find and display notes. Using Windows 8.1 Share Charm, users can easily capture notes, they can now also scan objects with the camera and search them and the app now displays recent notes with page previews.

Taking notes of something on the device’s screen is now easier than ever before. Users simply have to capture what’s on the screen and send it to the updated OneNote app through the Windows 8.1 Share Charm. The Camera Scan feature lets users take pictures of documents and whiteboards in the app. The pictures are automatically cropped, rotated, straightened, sharpened and even the shadows are removed to make them look like a document that was scanned. Using OCR or optical character recognition, the new OneNote app can now search text in an image which means that its easy to search for images of documents stored in the app. The app will also display recent notes taken across all of your devices, including those on other platforms like iOS and Android. Instead of the page title, previews will now be shown so that users can easily get a glimpse of text, images and even ink content without actually having to open the note. The updated OneNote app is love now and available as a free download from the Windows App Store.

OneNote for Windows 8.1 now uses optical character recognition to search scanned images

OneNote for Windows 8.1 now uses optical character recognition to search scanned images

It’s been about four months since the OneNote app for Windows received a significant update. Today, though, Microsoft is adding several key features, with the biggest being the ability to scan images and then search them using keywords. This new Camera Scan feature, as it’s called, automatically crops and rotates photos, removing shadows and sharpening the image where necessary. Then, it uses optical character recognition (OCR) to search for words in scanned images, making it easy to find those meetings notes you took the other day.

Additionally, the update now allows you to save things using the Share Charm. And if you want a shot of the entire screen (and not just a specific item, like a recipe), you can use the Share Charm in a Windows app and then select” screenshot” from the Share Charm drop-down. (In desktop mode, screenshots are already the standard option.) Finally, the app now has both a full-screen view and a “Recent Notes” option, which shows all your notes in the order you last used them, regardless of whether you were viewing them on Windows, iOS or Android. These are accompanied by short previews, making it easier to zero in on what you want. And that about sums it up — to get the latest version, hit up the download link below.%Gallery-slideshow123034%

OneNote for Windows 8 gains Office 365 integration, touch keyboard improvements

Hot on the heels of the recent iOS and Android overhaul of OneNote comes an update for the Windows 8 and Windows RT versions which adds Office 365 integration and touch keyboard improvements. The app is available in the Windows Store right now and lets you sign into your Office 365 school or work account and sync notebooks right from within the OneNote app. As for the touch keyboard, it’s both invoked and dismissed by simply tapping into any empty space, which makes it easier to use. This allows you to switch seamlessly between inputting text and finger painting — or basically, just focus on your notes. Hit the source link below for the update.
