LG E960 Mako surfaces in photos, may be the future Nexus phone update

Rumors have been swirling that LG will get its first crack at a Nexus phone this year. If there’s any merit to that claim, we might have just received an early peek. An XDA-Developers forum goer has posted a collection of photos for the E960, which appears to be a variant of the Optimus G — until you realize that it’s using software navigation keys, doesn’t quite resemble the international or AT&T Optimus G models and is oddly badged as the “Full JellyBean on Mako.” Given that Google likes to name its reference Android phones after fish, it doesn’t take much to suspect that a device codenamed Mako is more likely to become a Nexus than an Optimus. The completely stock but unreleased Android 4.1.2 build of Jelly Bean certainly helps fuel the rumor mill. If the E960 does carry Google’s honorific, though, some may be in for a disappointment knowing that the model that reached the FCC last week doesn’t have LTE. We won’t rule out that this is one of multiple Nexus variants, if it’s a Nexus at all, but the 3G edition’s filing hints that Google may not rock the boat for its 2012 flagship.

Update: More images have surfaced, this time with the anti-spy casing removed from the back of the phone. Click past the break for more.

LG’s First Nexus-Branded Smartphone Reportedly Set For A Late October Unveiling

Mockup courtesy of AndroidAndMe

There’s been no shortage of LG Nexus phone rumors these past few days, but it seems the time for speculation may have come to an abrupt end. CNET has confirmed with sources close to the matter that Google’s next Nexus smartphone will indeed be based on LG’s new Optimus G handset, and is slated to be officially revealed at the end of this month.

Roger Cheng’s report follows another sizable LG leak from earlier this morning — MoDaCo’s Paul O’Brien reported that the yet-to-be-named LG Nexus device sports an IPS display running at 1280×768, a quad-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB of RAM, support for wireless charging, and an 8-megapixel camera (no 13MP sensor to be found, unfortunately).

The new Nexus’ spec sheet isn’t just a straight carry-over of the Optimus G’s, though. If O’Brien’s intel is to be believed, then users will be stuck with a downright scant 8GB or 16GB of internal memory to work with, and with nary an expandable memory card slot in sight. He notes that the storage situation may well change over time, but this will still come as a bummer to those looking to pocket a few seasons of The West Wing. To top it all off, the device will also reportedly sport a sealed battery — a first for the Nexus smartphone line.

Of course, assuming this information is all reliable, there’s still one big question in play here: will the LG Nexus phone be alone? After all, Google’s M.O. these past few years was to collaborate with a hardware partner on a single reference smartphone. The prevailing rumor at this point is that LG’s Nexus device will be only one of many that will soon find their way to the Google Play Store’s Devices section. There’s some evidence that Samsung (who has worked with Google on Nexus hardware twice now) is busy putting together a follow-up to its venerable Galaxy Nexus, and former hardware partner HTC may be working on a 5-inch Nexus-branded device of its own.

Regardless of what their rivals may do, the news could mean big things for LG. To put it mildly, the company hasn’t had the sort of runaway success in the smartphone market that Samsung or even HTC has had. While a Nexus-branded collaboration with Google isn’t guaranteed to be one, it stands a decent shot at being one of the company’s stronger competitors. Marketing tactics like an aggressive off-contract price point could help strengthen that possibility, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see details like that (plus a whole host of others) over the next few weeks.

LG Optimus G Hands-On: Like Megan Fox Wrapped In Burlap [Android]

LG wanted to build a super-phone. Good idea. So LG crammed it with the nastiest specs we’ve seen on a mobile device. We were excited. We got to play with it today… and they covered that beauty in one of the ugliest skins we’ve seen. C’mon, guys! More »

LG Optimus G for AT&T handson

Well, we’re finally getting a look at the US edition of LG’s Optimus G and surprise, surprise, it’s not that terribly different from the version we got to play with in both Korea and NYC last month. We’re still looking at that stunning 4.7-inch 1280×768 True HD IPS PLUS display, a speedy Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, 2GB RAM, a hefty 2,100mAh battery and 16GB storage — on this model, at least. But what, if anything, has changed on this Android 4.0 handset now that it’s here in the US cruising along on AT&T’s LTE network? Keep reading after the break to find out.

LG Optimus G headed for AT&T and Sprint with different cameras

All right, we did take a look at the LG Optimus G sometime at the end of last month, and we do know that the smartphone itself is not too far away from a US release sometime later this November, which is a month after the handset rolls out in Japan. While pricing details are unavailable, at least we have more concrete information on just which carrier in the US will offer the LG Optimus G – and Sprint as well as AT&T will be two of the candidates.

This bit of information came about after LG rolled out a statement that confirmed AT&T and Sprint as the carriers who will have the LG Optimus G as part of their inventory this November. AT&T themselves are working on a statement to announce this bit of news, but pricing details and exact availability remain unknown as at press time.

One ought to take note that on paper, it might sound like the same LG Optimus G being offered by Sprint and AT&T, but if you were to look closer, the AT&T version will feature an 8-megapixel camera sensor, while Sprint’s model will ship with a far larger 13-megapixel camera at the back. LG’s Flagship Optimus G Slated To Hit AT&T And Sprint Shelves Later This Year

optimusg

LG’s last big (and I mean big) smartphone release around these parts was the Intuition, a funky phablet that many a critic panned. Thankfully, the company’s straight-laced follow-up — the nicely spec’d Optimus G — was revealed earlier this month, and now both AT&T and Sprint have signed on to sell the thing when it launches later this year.

Of course, just like nearly every phone announcement made this week, neither carrier has revealed when they plan to stock the G on their respective shelves. All LG will say is that the Optimus will see the light of day at some point in Q4, and that could mean a decent wait. Whether or not Verizon Wireless or T-Mobile (or should I say, T-Metro) will carry the thing is still up in the air too, but it wouldn’t be a shock to see the former pick up the G in time for the holidays.

The Optimus G, in case you’ve forgotten, sports a 4.7-inch HD (1280×768, to be specific) IPS display, and pairs a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with an LTE radio — a combination that’s only starting to pick up steam here in the States. Nestled within the G’s surprisingly sturdy plastic frame is 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage to boot. Sprint actually seems to have gotten the better part of the deal when it comes to snapping photos.

You see, Sprint’s version of Optimus G packs a 13-megapixel camera instead of the 8-megapixel shooter that AT&T’s variant does. Then again, the company’s LTE network still currently covers only a fraction of what AT&T’s does, so in the end both carrier’s consumers have something to get riled up over. To make things even dicier, there could be more Optimus-oriented squabbling in the works very shortly if some recent rumblings hold true — some claim that Google’s next Nexus smartphone will be based on the Optimus G hardware, which could make those holiday purchasing choices even tougher to hash out.

More rumors suggest that LG’s Optimus G could be the next Nexus device

A week ago we reported that according to the rumors, LG’s upcoming Optimus G Android phone could also be one of the several upcoming Google Nexus handsets. Well it seems that Spanish website, Movilzona has “confirmed” that possibility. This is according to their source who apparently is connected to Vodafone (or at least that’s what Google Translate has suggested), who has also offered up some additional details about LG’s rumored Nexus device.

The upcoming Nexus handset is said to feature a 4.7” display which will apparently be of the same quality and detail offered by Apple’s Retina Display. Given that the Optimus G has a 4.7” display and a resolution of 1280×768, we can’t help but wonder if the LG Nexus and the Optimus G could be the same device. This can hardly be called official information, but given that it’s around that time of the year when Google is expected to announce their next Nexus device, we expect Nexus-related rumors to start ramping up. Either way we’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you think? If this is indeed the case, Google’s next Nexus will probably the most powerful yet.

LG Optimus G more details – preview with videos

Yesterday, I was at the LG Optimus G launch event in Seoul and I could briefly play with a unit and post a hands -on. This morning, the LG flagship smartphone was launched in the US at a press conference in New-York.

I finally got the time to shoot additional photos of the Optimus G white version, which is the model I prefer.  So far, I am really impressed by the unit I played with, the unibody design is sleek and elegant, with a great build quality that encloses powerful performance.

LG is pushing hard its software differentiation by emphasizing its “unique user experience”, which is supported by a set of custom user interface features. Some people are not really fan of Google mobile OS customization since it  increases the fragmentation of the Android ecosystem, however, I found LG innovations very interesting, pleasing to the eyes and practical.

See the demo video above, another one is available in the full post with a detailed explanation. More information about the Optimus G in the full post.

LG Optimus G hands-on redux (video)

LG Optimus G hands-on redux

By now, you should be well acquainted with LG’s glass-clad Optimus G — the Android device so nice the company introduced it twice. And while today’s stateside splash narrows the focus on its US availability and Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC, there are still some software nuggets worth exploring. To help illustrate the powers of this quad-core Krait beast, we dug through the company’s take on ICS with its colorful icons and heaping helpings of convenient shortcuts. Users can take advantage of a multi-tasking feature called QSlide which displays two full-sized apps on the same screen, enjoy up to five levels of zoom during streaming video playback or even wirelessly mirror their smartphone’s content with Dual Screen Dual Play.

Like other members of the LG mobile family (such as the Vu and Intuition) you’ll also be able to take advantage of QuickMemo, which places a shortcut in the notification shade for quickly capturing a screenshot and marking it up with various drawing tools. For the self portrait-obsessed there’s also Cheese Shutter, which lets you trigger the image capture simply by saying “cheese” instead of fumbling blindly for the virtual shutter button on screen. While the UI can be a little bit busy, even by Android skin standards, everything hums a long pretty smoothly thanks to the almost excessive power of the quad-core 1.5GHz chip and 2GB of RAM. But don’t just take our word for it. Skip on past the break for a surface-level peek of the G in action.

LG Optimus G and its quad-core 1.5GHz S4 Pro coming to US shores in Q4 (update: video)

When it comes to LG’s latest flagship, it appears there can be no shortage of official announcements. So, while the news from overseas may not be quite so fresh, there’s certainly nothing stale about the Optimus G. Today the company held a second celebration in honor of its powerhouse — the first to pack Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro: a quad-core SoC clocked at 1.5GHz. Buffered by a heaping 2GB RAM and an Adreno 320 GPU this absolutely beastly device is officially coming to American shores in the fourth quarter of this year. The 4.7-inch phone may ship with some slightly different specs, depending on carrier, but they’ll still find a home for the 1280 x 768 True HD, in-cell, IPS display. There’s no specifics about carriers or pricing as yet, but we’ll let you know when we do.

Update: Hit the break for LG’s Optimus G PR video.
