LG Optimus G could also be the Optimus Nexus? [Rumor]

So it seems that LG’s Optimus G will be making its way into the US market come November, but will it be as the Optimus G or will it be as Google’s next Nexus handset? A few days ago, the Samsung GT-i9260 was spotted in a User Agent Profile which gave rise to the speculation that this could be the next Nexus device. However this wasn’t not a guarantee as Google has not officially announced it yet, but according to the folks at Android and Me, they have heard that LG is expected to produce a Nexus handset this year and given that the Optimus G will be their greatest smartphone to date, it has been speculated that perhaps the Optimus G could be the next Nexus phone.

Interestingly this does not rule Samsung out as according to earlier rumors, it has been suggested that there could be multiple Nexus handsets this year from LG, Samsung and Sony, so having both LG and Samsung make Nexus devices isn’t too ludicrous, unless of course the earlier rumors were wrong. Either way we’ll be taking this with a grain of salt for now and suggest you do the same, but what do you guys think? If true, do you think LG should make the Optimus G their Nexus handset, or do you think it would be better for them to release two separate devices instead?

LG Optimus G to make its way stateside in November

It wasn’t too long ago when LG Korea officially presented to the world their latest and possibly greatest Android smartphone to date – the LG Optimus G. While it will be available for those living in Korea starting from next week, those in other countries can expect it in October, but does that include the US? Given that US carriers have a habit of tweaking phones to their specifications in terms of software (and sometimes hardware to a certain extent), it has been reported that the LG Optimus G will only be making its appearance in the US in November.

No word on which carrier will be picking it up, but given its 4G LTE connectivity, we guess either AT&T, Verizon or Sprint (or possibly all three) will be offering it. T-Mobile has yet to roll out their LTE network so perhaps they might be out of the running for now. Either way hopefully there will be more details to be had later today where both LG and Qualcomm will be taking to the stage in NYC, so stay tuned! In the meantime you can check out our hands-on of the device here.

The Engadget Interview: LG Mobile's Chief Research Engineer Dr. Henry Nho on the Optimus G

After yesterday’s hands-on with the Optimus G we had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Henry Nho, LG Mobile’s Chief Research Engineer, to discuss the technology behind the company’s beautiful new flagship smartphone. We talked about the challenges his team encountered while designing the world’s first handset to feature Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC — including issues such as power and thermal management. Making the handset 8.45mm (0.33-inch) thin was another major engineering feat made possible by the Zerogap Touch display, sealed 2100mAh Li-polymer battery and compact 13-megapixel camera module. Want to know more? Go ahead and watch our video interview.

LG Optimus G is their latest flagship device

South Korean consumer electronics giant LG has come up with their latest flagship smartphone known as the LG Optimus G, where this particular LTE device is said to deliver superior user experience for “Living Without Boundaries”, whatever that means. This new premium flagship device delivers a totally unique User Experience (UX) that is supported by innovative hardware performance. The kind of hardware located underneath the hood is said to be powerful enough to deliver a creative and engaging UX which will allow Optimus G owners to, in the aforementioned words, “live without boundaries.” Just what kind of performance does it pack? Let us check out right after the jump, shall we not?

For starters, it will feature the powerful quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor alongside the rest of the industry best technologies for enhanced viewing and longer battery life, all crammed into a beautiful sleek design and innovative UX features. LG hopes that the Optimus G will be able to deliver the kind of experience that you cannot find on other smartphones in the market, but we do wonder just how lofty this particular claim is in comparison with other flagship models from rival manufacturers.

Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company, said, “The Optimus G is a groundbreaking premium device not only in the history of LG but also in the smartphone industry. With the Optimus G, users will be able to experience unsurpassed UX features that will allow them to perform tasks that really enhance their daily lives.”

For instance, the QSlide Function displays a couple of different screens simultaneously on a single display. It will not only show off a part of the screen but the entire screen of both functions, where the user will be able to be more productive, completing two tasks simultaneously, including sending a text message or looking for something on the web while watching a video.

Not only that, Live Zooming allows one to enjoy an ehanced video-watching experience as users are able to zoom in up to five times while the video is being streamed for an up close and personal experience, such as reliving your child’s recorded video from a school recital.

Other hardware specifications include Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 4.7-inch WXGA display, 2GB RAM, a 13-megapixel camera at the back with a 1.3-megapixel shooter up front, a 2,100mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, and USB connectivity alongside DLNA and NFC support. Are you interested in the LG Optimus G as your next flagship device?

LG Optimus G: preview of LG’s latest and greatest

As I have posted earlier, we are in Seoul/South Korea, where LG has unveiled its high-end LG Optimus G smartphone. After spending some time with the handset, I’m going to give you my first impressions, but before I do that let’s go back to the main specifications to provide some context for those who are just jumping on board now.

The LG Optimus G is the first handset powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro which yields excellent performance as we’ve seen earlier when we played with the quad-core S4 Pro development platform. Unlike The S4, the S4 Pro does not come with an integrated modem, which means that LG can swap modems fairly easily to adapt to various LTE bands worldwide. This means that the Optimus G should show up in most sizeable markets. (more…)

LG Optimus G handson with Korea's latest powerhouse video

We’re in Seoul for the launch of LG’s latest flagship smartphone, the Optimus G, and we finally managed to spend a few minutes with a demo unit. This is a powerhouse — the first handset built around Qualcomm’s 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro. It features LTE, a 4.7-inch 1280×768 True HD IPS PLUS display, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage, a 13-megapixel autofocus camera, a sealed 2100mAh battery, and NFC.

We like the simple and elegant design, which is reminiscent of LG’s Chocolate and Prada models — it’s thin (8.45mm / 0.33 inches) and reasonably light for its size (145g / 5.11oz). The front sports a glass surface with three capacitive buttons and the back showcases the company’s Crystal Reflection process — an attractive patterned glass-like finish that’s a bit of a fingerprint magnet. Materials and build quality are excellent (better than the Galaxy S III) and the Optimus G feels pleasant in hand.

You’ll find a volume rocker and micro-SIM slot on the left edge and the power / lock key on the right. There’s a notification light next to the 1.3MP front-facing camera. A standard headphone jack sits on the top side, with the micro-USB / MHL connector on the bottom. The speaker and main camera are in the back, pretty much where you’d expect them. While the display is definitely high quality, it’s not mind blowing (the One X screen still looks better) — we expected better viewing angles from LG’s True HD IPS PLUS and Zerogap Touch technologies.

Sadly, we didn’t spend much time using the software, but the Optimus G runs Android 4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with a skin similar to what we saw on the Optimus 4X HD and performance is definitely impressive. We’ll get more seat time with LG’s flagship over the next few days, so stay tuned for more impressions. In the meantime, enjoy our gallery below and our hands-on video after the break.

Update: We’ve added pictures of the white model and screenshots to the gallery.

LG Optimus G launches with Quad-Core Snapdragon S4 Pro, 4G LTE and 13 MP Camera

Today, the long rumored LG Optimus G was officially presented at a press conference in Korea which we attended. With this flagship 4G LTE smartphone and its powerful hardware, LG is also pushing what they call a “unique user experience” with a number of interesting user interface custom features.

The most impressive addition to the software is the QSlide Function, a feature that allows to display two application screens simultaneously, thus enabling multitasking. For example, users can search the web or send messages while watching a video. To date, the only mobile devices featuring this type of split-screen capability are the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I cannot wait to test QSlide in a real-world situation.+

LG launches Optimus G flagship smartphone quadcore S4 Pro, LTE, 2GB RAM, ICS, 13MP camera

It’s official! Today in Seoul LG is announcing its latest flagship smartphone, the Optimus G. The 8.45mm (0.33-inch) thin handset — which has been rumored for weeks — packs Qualcomm’s Fusion 3 chipset which pairs a 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC (APQ8064) with a 2G / 3G / LTE radio (MDM9615). It features 2GB of DDR RAM and a 4.7-inch 1280×768 (320ppi) True HD IPS PLUS display with Zerogap Touch (in-cell touch) technology. A sealed 2100mAh Li-polymer battery rated for 800 charge cycles powers this Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) device. The rear camera sports a 13-megapixel backside-illuminated sensor with 1.1µm pixels, an f/2.4 autofocus lens and a single LED flash — along with a more pedestrian 1.3MP shooter in front. There’s 32GB of built-in flash storage, but no microSD card slot. Other specs include WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, A-GPS, NFC and MHL.

Aesthetically, the Optimus G marries LG’s Chocolate and Prada design-languages into a sleek 145g (5.11oz) unibody smartphone. The front is all glass with three capacitive buttons while the back indroduces the company’s Crystal Reflection process which gives the handset “the ability to display different patterns depending on the viewing angle and lighting“. LG’s placing a lot of emphasis on how the user experience benefits from the Optimus G’s quad-core Krait CPU and Adreno 320 GPU — something it calls “cross-tasking”. This includes capabilties like QSlide Function, Live Zooming, Dual Screen Dual Play, QuickMemo, Screen Zooming, Application Link and Icon Personalizer, plus camera funtionality such as Time Catch Shot, Cheese Shutter, Smart Shutter and Low Light Shot Noise Reduction — all of which are detailed for your reading pleasure in the PR after the break.

Stay tuned for hands-on pictures, video and first impressions later today…

Update: Unsubsidized pricing will be 999,900 KRW ($895 USD) when the Optimus G ships in Korea next week. That’s pretty steep, even for an unlocked device.

LG Optimus G makes its commercial debut in Korea

Come 19th of September, LG and Qualcomm are set to make an announcement which some believe could very well be the LG Optimus G. Previously it was rumored that the Optimus G could be announced for the US this week and thanks to a commercial debut in South Korea, it leaves little to the imagination as to what LG and Qualcomm’s upcoming event will be about. The commercial itself doesn’t really tell us much about the device, but given that the phone has been announced a while back already, we guess we didn’t really need any new information. In any case if the LG Optimus G is a phone you’d love to get your hands on, check out the commercial in the video above, perhaps it might be able to whet your appetite. You can also check back with us on the 19th of September for additional details.

LG Optimus G makes its commercial debut in Korea

Well, we know there’s an LG event right around the corner and, if we were the betting type, we’d put our money on the flagship Optimus G making its stateside debut. Perhaps the biggest clue to what the company has up its sleeve is that the quad-core Snapdragon S4-powered handset just made its video debut. The sleek 4.7 inch handset is staring in its own commercial, currently posted on YouTube, that will be airing in the manufacturer’s homeland shortly after launch. The brief clip doesn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know, but we can’t find any reason complain about a few extra peeks at it before release. Check out the video after the break.
