LG Boasts 1 Million Optimus Vu Units Sold In South Korea

vu1 LG Boasts 1 Million Optimus Vu Units Sold In South KoreaA couple of days ago we reported that Samsung had managed to sell 1 million Galaxy Note 2 units back in South Korea, but it looks like Samsung isn’t alone as their South Korean competitor, LG, has similarly announced that they too have managed to sell 1 million units of the LG Optimus Vu in South Korea as well. While congratulations are certainly in order, it should be noted that the LG Optimus Vu was launched much earlier than the Galaxy Note 2, meaning that it took LG longer to hit that 1 million mark compared to Samsung who only took 90 days. It should also been noted that apparently LG took sales on the Optimus Vu II into account, so those numbers might not be as accurate as you might think.

As a quick recap, the LG Optimus Vu is basically LG’s answer to the phablet trend and Samsung’s Galaxy Note device which had surprisingly caught on a lot better than many would have anticipated. However the LG Optimus Vu was designed differently from the Galaxy Note in the sense that it favored a slightly smaller screen at 5” and its weird 4:3 aspect ratio which made the device rather boxy and weird looking, not to mention probably not as ergonomic as one might think, but what do you guys think? Do you prefer the LG Optimus Vu or its successor, the Vu II, or the Samsung Galaxy Note 2?

LG Optimus Vu 2 official specifications announced

It was sometime in the middle of this year when we knew that the LG Optimus Vu 2 is being prepared for a fall release, and just a couple of days ago, we spotted leaked details concerning the LG Optimus Vu 2. Well, since good things come to those who wait and patience is always a virtue, here we are with the official specifications of the highly anticipated LG Optimus Vu 2 from LG Korea themselves, where this puppy boasts of a 5” display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, Voice over LTE (VoLTE) support, a removable 2,150mAh battery, 2GB RAM, an 8-megapixel shooter at the back and a 1.3-megapixel camera in front, a dual-core 1.5GHz MSM8960 processor, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich as the operating system of choice out of the box.

Folks living in South Korea will need to fork out the equivalent of $864 for this puppy, which is a rather hefty price point to begin with, but we will just wait and see whether the US version, if released, will be a whole lot more affordable. Would you pick this over other smartphones, or is the Vu 2 the one for you? [Press Release]

LG Optimus Vu II specs officially unveiled: new CPU, IR, stylus and ‘One Key’ accessory

LG Optimus Vu II specs officially unveiled new CPU, IR, stylus and 'One Key' accessory

Whether or not there’s a 5-inch 4:3 aspect ratio spot in the world to fit LG’s Optimus Vu is still up for debate, but the company is pressing on and has now officially revealed specs for its follow up, the Optimus Vu II. Matching the specs leaked previously the CPU is a Qualcomm MSM8960 that’s a newer design than the previous one, but is still a dual-core chip clocked at 1.5GHz. The RAM has been doubled to 2GB, the battery is just a hair larger at 2,150mAh and it will come with Android 4.0 out of the box plus that integrated IR blaster and QRemote software to control your home theater. The VoLTE capability listed in the leak is here and accounted for, as well as a Rubberdium Pen 2.0 stylus with a thinner, more precise nub. One thing we hadn’t heard about is its optional “One Key” accessory, a waterproof fob intended for your key ring that can be pressed to make your phone beep loudly if you need to find it, and light up blue or red to alert you when there are messages or if it has finished charging. The Optimus Vu II is priced at 966,900 won ($864) in Korea, though we’ll have to wait for a US announcement to have any idea how much it will cost when it ships here.

LG Optimus Vu 2 details leaked

When it comes to movies and books, sequels are the norm, and so too, does the same apply to the world of consumer electronics, smartphones and tablets in particular. The LG Optimus Vu 2 is no doubt the sequel to the LG Optimus Vu (which was considered to fall under the phablet category), carrying a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 5” display. Well, details on the LG Optimus Vu 2 has just been leaked from South Korean blog Bad IT Tong, where it will come with a 5” display as well, where it would feature a 1,024 x 768 resolution screen that is similar to that of the current Vu. At least the RAM count has been bumped up to 2GB, while the Qualcomm processor underneath the hood will receive an update to a 1.5GHz dual-core model, while retaining the LTE radio that is found in its US Intuition variant.

Forget about Android 4.1 Jelly Bean right out of the box, as you will be one step behind with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, where it will be accompanied by an 8-megapixel rear shooter, and a microSD memory card slot that lets you hold up to 32GB of storage space. A 2,150 mAh battery should be able to help it last throughout the work day. There is no word on pricing details in the US just yet, so we will just have to wait and see.

LG Optimus Vu II specs leak out: twice the RAM of the original, few other changes

Optimus Vu II

Having put the phat back in phablet with its original 4:3 aspect ratio, 5-inch Optimus Vu, LG seems bent on releasing a successor already, the Optimus Vu II, according to a leak from Korean blog Bad IT Tong. The new Galaxy Note II challenger would carry the same form factor and 1,024 x 768 IPS screen as the current Vu model, while doubling the RAM to 2GB, bumping the Qualcomm processor to an 8960 1.5GHz dual-core model (not the international quad-core version) and keeping the LTE radio from its US Intuition variant. It would come out of the box with Android 4.0, an 8-megapixel rear shooter, up to 32GB of microSD storage and a 2,150 mAh battery, judging by the leaked image above — all specs we’ve seen before. There’s no word yet on US pricing, availability, a stylus or an intriguing universal remote app teased by LG, but recent purchasers of the original Optimus Vu might be feeling left in a technology wake.

LG Optimus Vu 2 with Q Remote app to arrive in South Korea next month

Perhaps on purpose or perhaps they didn’t mean to, but either way it seems that LG has outed the Optimus Vu 2 for the Korean market. This is thanks to a press release announcing an app for the device called the Q Remote which basically brings about IR functionality to the handset. In case it wasn’t obvious enough, the Q Remote will play nicely with compatible set top boxes, home appliances and other devices/gadgets by LG. Given the size of the original Optimus Vu, it certainly has no problems doubling up as a remote control for the home.

The Optimus Vu 2 is set for a release in South Korean markets next month, which oddly enough is also the same time the Tegra-3 powered Optimus Vu will be going on sale in the US on Verizon’s network as the (possible) LG Intuition. Could the Optimus Vu 2 be simply the Tegra-3 powered Optimus Vu, or are we looking at a totally different device entirely?

LG announces infrared-equipped Optimus Vu II and universal remote app

LG Qremote

LG just outed the Optimus Vu II for the Korean market, designed around a remote control app, QRemote. The company’s translated PR claims (erroneously) that the new device will be “the world’s first smartphone using infrared,” letting it operate gear like set-top boxes and home appliances, including other companies’ products. The device is scheduled to launch next month in the maker’s home country, around the time the Tegra 3-powered Optimus Vu will go on sale in the US as Verizon’s LG Intuition. The company hasn’t released any technical details for the phone — in fact, other than the remote functions, we don’t even know if there are any changes from the current pen-capable model. In any case, it might give pause to another Korean maker about to announce an awfully similar product.

LG Optimus Vu 2 arriving this fall?

LG Optimus VuThe Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has been rumored to announce later this year and it looks like it might not be the only phablet in town. According to rumors online, LG will also be announcing the sequel to its large smartphone, the Optimus Vu. It will be called the Optimus Vu 2 and is said to be unveiled before this year’s IFA (where the Galaxy Note 2 is rumored to make its appearance). The Optimus Vu 2 is going to feature a 5″ 4:3 1024 x 768 display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It is also expected to hit the shelves in September or October.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note proved to the world that there’s a market for these humongous smartphones, so it’s going to be interesting to see if other companies can follow suit with their own devices. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted when we find out more.
