Ubuntu’s Touch Developer Preview was originally put forward as something for “enthusiasts” as well as developers. Well, having been hands-on with the code that will be made public tomorrow, we’d say it requires enthusiasm a-plenty — perhaps even amateur coder quantities of the stuff. That’s because a lot of core functionality is still missing from the OS, such as the ability to play music files or import real-life contacts, and there’s a long way to go if it’s to be signed off as “code complete” in October.

On the other hand, this is really just a statement of the obvious. Canonical has been pretty clear that the main purpose of this early release is to lure in developers and get them to contribute to the fundamental stages of the project. Furthermore, the video after the break shows that there are many aspects of the OS which work fine — such as the gallery and video apps, the “side stage” and HUD features, and also general performance on the Nexus 10‘s hardware. The UI merges some Kindle- and Windows 8-esque features with things that are totally original — like responsive design which allows the exact same OS and apps to run on a phone, tablet, TV or desktop. We certainly hope it generates interest — not only among developers but also among device manufacturers who want to do more than just talk about differentiation.

Ubuntu for tablets revealed

Here it is: the fourth and final piece of the Ubuntu puzzle. We’ve seen the OS on smartphones, on TVs and of course on desktops, but the tablet version has spent a little longer in its dressing room. Fortunately, Canonical feels that the last stage in its four-screen strategy is now ready for the limelight and has released a video of the software in action. The clip is embedded right after the break, where you’ll also find details of the preview code coming to the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 this Thursday, plus our take on why this is such a big deal.

Starting with the preview, you heard it right — the tablet OS will be made available to devs and enthusiasts at the exact same time as the smartphone preview on February 21st. So in addition to the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4, you’ll also be able to get a taste of touch-based Ubuntu on a Nexus 7 or Nexus 10. Canonical is promising to provide installation tools and instructions to smooth the process of flashing the early build to your device. (Note: this isn’t to be confused with the older desktop version of Ubuntu which could be made to run on a Nexus 7.)

Commercial tablets containing Ubuntu aren’t likely to be available until well into 2014. The latest we’ve heard is that a barebones smartphone will arrive early next year (albeit with some indications of a possible October launch), followed a few months later by a high-spec smartphone with access to an app store and docking mode, and then by tablets at some point after that. Although Ubuntu has made good progress in recruiting an unnamed silicon company to optimize its chips for the OS, it has yet to cement any deals with device manufacturers or carriers.

Regardless of precise dates, why would someone bother with such a latecomer to the mobile OS game? There are actually a few good reasons. Most importantly, Ubuntu is so lightweight that — by the time Ubuntu 14.04 rolls around — it’ll be able to use the same code across all four form factors, with the same security features, user profiles and UI fundamentals.

Since the OS will be a constant, a smartphone-oriented app will work on an Ubuntu tablet or any other Ubuntu device without having to be ported or even tweaked. (Although devs will still have the option of adding functionality or UI elements that are specific to one category of device, or that only wake up when a device is docked — like when a tablet is attached to a keyboard or when a phone is hooked up to a bigger display.)

This is very different to what Windows offers, for example, with its separate WP8, RT and Windows 8 versions. In fact, Mark Shuttleworth claims to have “cracked this one in a way that has eluded Microsoft,” not least because Ubuntu’s approach means that smartphone- and tablet-sized apps can run side-by-side on the same device in split screen mode. For example, you could have the Skype phone app running at the same time as a tablet document editor. This feature will be called “side stage,” and judging from the video — which is all we have to go on at this point — it looks like a nifty approach to multi-tasking, and perhaps slightly more flexible that Samsung’s multi-window solution in TouchWiz.

London 19th February 2013: Canonical today presented Ubuntu’s tablet interface – the next step towards one unified family of experiences for personal computing on phones, tablets, PCs and TVs.

“Multi-tasking productivity meets elegance and rigorous security in our tablet experience,” said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu and Canonical. “Our family of interfaces now scales across all screens, so your phone can provide tablet, PC and TV experiences when you dock it. That’s unique to Ubuntu and it’s the future of personal computing.”

“Fashion industry friends say the Ubuntu phone and tablet are the most beautiful interfaces they’ve seen for touch” said Ivo Weevers, who leads the Canonical design team. “We’re inspired by the twin goals of style and usability, and working with developers who are motivated to create the best possible experience for friends, family and industry.”

The new tablet design doesn’t just raise the bar for elegant presentation, it breaks new ground in design and engineering, featuring:

— Real multitasking: Uniquely, Ubuntu allows a phone app on the screen at the same time as a tablet app. The Ubuntu side stage was invented both to enable efficient multitasking and to improve the usability of phone apps on tablets.

— Secure multi-user: Multiple accounts on one tablet with full encryption for personal data, combined with the trusted Ubuntu security model that is widely used in banks, governments and sensitive environments, making it ideal for work and family use.

— Voice controlled HUD productivity: The Heads-Up Display, unique to Ubuntu, makes it fast and easy to do complex things on touch devices, and transforms touch interfaces for rich applications, bringing all the power of the PC to your tablet.

— Edge magic for cleaner apps: Screen edges are used for navigation between apps, settings and controls. That makes for less clutter, more content, and sleeker hardware. No physical or soft buttons are required. It’s pure touch elegance.

— Content focus: Media is neatly presented on the customisable home screen, which can search hundreds of sources. Perfect for carriers and content owners that want to highlight their own content, while still providing access to a global catalogue.

— Full convergence: The tablet interface is presented by exactly the same OS and code that provides the phone, PC and TV interfaces, enabling true device convergence. Ubuntu is uniquely designed to scale smoothly across all form factors.

The Ubuntu tablet interface supports screen sizes from 6″ to 20″ and resolutions from 100 to 450 PPI. “The tablet fits perfectly between phone and PC in the Ubuntu family” says Oren Horev, lead designer for the Ubuntu tablet experience. “Not only do we integrate phone apps in a distinctive way, we shift from tablet to PC very smoothly in convergence devices.”

On high end silicon, Ubuntu offers a full PC experience when the tablet is docked to a keyboard, with access to remote Windows applications over standard protocols from Microsoft, Citrix, VMWare and Wyse. “An Ubuntu tablet is a secure thin client that can be managed with the same tools as any Ubuntu server or desktop,” said Stephane Verdy, who leads enterprise desktop and thin client products at Canonical. “We are delighted to support partners on touch and mobile thin clients for the enterprise market.”

Even without chipset-specific optimisation, Ubuntu performs beautifully on entry level hardware. “Our four-year engagement with ARM has shaped Ubuntu for mobile” said Rick Spencer, VP Ubuntu Engineering at Canonical. “We benefit from the huge number of contributing developers who run Ubuntu every day, many of whom are moving to touch devices as their primary development environment.”

For silicon vendors, Ubuntu is compatible with any Linux-oriented Board Support Package (BSP). This means Ubuntu is easy to enable on most chipset designs that are currently running Android. Ubuntu and Android are the two platforms enabled by Linaro members.

The Touch Developer Preview of Ubuntu will be published on the 21st February 2013 with installation instructions for the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablet devices as well as smartphones such as the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. Installable images and source code will be available from developer.ubuntu.com.

The Preview SDK, which currently supports phone app development, will now be updated to support tablet apps as well. Uniquely, on Ubuntu, developers can create a single application that works on the phone, tablet, PC and TV because it is the same system and all services work across all form factors.

Tizen 2.0 SDK and source code emerge from alpha, bring slew of new features

Sure, an early version of Tizen 2.0 Magnolia may have first emerged last September, but now the SDK and source code have dropped the “alpha” designation for a proper release. After a few months of incubation, the open source OS has been laden with enhanced support for HTML5 and a beefed up Web UI framework that enables full-screen and multi-window features. Developers can now leverage new hardware APIs for Bluetooth and NFC support, and access a device’s call history, calendar and messaging “subsystems.” Support for background applications, text-to-speech and IP Push have also made it into the operating system along with reference applications including the likes of a calendar, gallery and phone app. In addition, a native IDE and a spruced up web development environment have been released with the latest code. It’s not like we didn’t have ample warning, so by now anyone wanting to try out the new Ubuntu smartphone OS should have gotten hold of a Galaxy Nexus to be their test device. Still don’t have one? Then you’ll be pleased to know that a Nexus 4 will actually serve just as well, and you have six days to get equipped. The Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview will be made public on February 21st alongside the open source code and all the tools necessary to flash those two devices.

The official aim is to help devs and enthusiasts learn the platform and start building software for it, whether for core functions or for when a full third-party app store eventually goes live. The bigger picture is that, by the time Ubuntu 13.10 launches in October, an app written in this platform’s Qt/QML lingo should be able to run on any Ubuntu device — whether it be a PC, TV, tablet or smartphone — with no porting required. Rest assured that we have a couple of Nexii at the ready and we fully intend to give this newcomer a thorough hazing / write-up as soon as possible.

There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth when Microsoft declared that fairly fresh (and costly) Windows Phone 7 devices like the Nokia Lumia 900 would never taste its latest WP8 wares. To assuage hurt feelings and keep legacy phone owners within throwing distance of the latest devices like the Nokia Lumia 920 or HTC’s 8X, Redmond introduced Windows Phone 7.8 (version 7.10.8858), which started arriving via Zune on January 31st. It was likely hoping that the upgrade would tide legacy owners over until their contracts expired or boredom set in, at which point they’d get a new device packing WP8 — including not-too-costly models like the $249 (contract-free) Lumia 620. So the question is, will the 7.8 bone thrown at WP7 handset owners prevent them from looking at the greener Android or iOS grass across the fence? While Chrome is fast and stable, I like using Firefox because of some of the specific extensions and plugins that work with it. If you still love Firefox, then you’ll love the fact that Mozilla has just announced a Developer Preview Phone that will come with the lightweight Firefox OS, which is still being developed.

The Keon Firefox OS Smartphone has a 3.5-inch HVGA (480×320) touchscreen, 1GHz Snapdragon S1 processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, 1580 mAh battery, Wi-Fi, and a 3MP camera. The specs are nothing exceptional, but it will be continually updated with OTA OS updates. It will also be carrier-unlocked, so developers can tinker with it as much as they want. Its bigger brother will be the Peak, which will have the same storage, RAM, and connectivity specs, but it comes with a 4.3-inch HD screen, 8MP camera with flash, and a 2MP front facing camera with a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 CPU and a larger 1800 mAh battery.

Don’t ask, don’t get. That’s why we rang up Canonical and requested an early build of Ubuntu for the Galaxy Nexus. (Politely declined.) Next, we asked if maybe the company could speed up development of its dual OS solution for Android, since we’re really looking forward to it. (Funny looks.) Finally, we wondered if there was any possibility of dropping by the London HQ and interviewing someone in charge. (“Come on over!”) We promptly found ourselves sitting across a desk from Richard Collins, who left the Symbian Foundation 18 months ago to work at Canonical, and who has a very firm grasp of how Ubuntu is going to be hauled into the mobile era. He explains everything after the break, so if you have a big OS-shaped gap in your belly, or if you’re just intrigued to hear the proposition of a new player, read on.

Ubuntu for Smartphones

How is Ubuntu on a smartphone really the same Ubuntu we know from desktop PCs?

It’s the same code base, with our Unity UI, adapted to provide a very particular experience according to the device it’s running on. That makes it straightforward for developers to say, “here’s an Ubuntu application that I know works brilliantly on the desktop, I only have to adapt it using the tools that Ubuntu provides in order to make it work on a smartphone.”

But legacy desktop apps will still have to be ported?

Legacy apps will have to be adapted. They’ll need to compile on ARM processors, but that’s not a significant amount of work. When we start launching products, we’ll include an SDK which will allow developers to build apps which work on both the smartphone and the desktop interface.

Since Android is also Linux-based, is there any plan for Ubuntu to run Android apps?

Many Android developers already use Ubuntu as their desktop OS and we have a very close affinity with them. We intend to encourage them to make their Android applications run on Ubuntu, but we won’t engineer any middleware for running Android apps. Developers are intelligent and capable enough to make their apps run on our devices. We have an active initiative right now to directly help them achieve this. [See More Coverage below.]

Will you have a full app store ready for the launch of your smartphone?

In terms of our first go-to-market product strategy, the intention is not to have an application store full of ready-made applications that are there to download. We have a very definite approach in terms of addressing an important part of the market where users are primarily interested in being able to use a core set of applications.

You’re saying people interested in low-cost phones don’t need lots of apps?

At launch, we’ll have the capability for a mobile app store, but at this stage we don’t believe it is essential for the entry-level smartphone market we’re targeting. However, we won’t just be saying “there’s your basic applications, that’s all you’re going to need.” Our strategy includes giving carriers and manufacturers ways of delivering services in conjunction with us — we plan to give them more influence.

Do you want people buying your entry-level phone, in China for example, to know the Ubuntu brand?

Yes, of course. I want them to associate Ubuntu with a very interesting, relevant and enjoyable experience. The challenge for us is to take the success we have with developers, with enterprises, and take that into the consumer market.

Are you going after the same market as Mozilla’s Firefox OS?

[Mozilla] has a very particular type of technology. We believe that a rich user experience requires a native capability — it can’t be entirely addressed by a phone that only runs web applications. Web apps sit on servers in different parts of the internet, so it’s hard for them to interact and share information.

You’re also going up against Nokia’s Asha series running on S40

Nokia’s S40 is only defined as being a low-end smartphone platform. Ubuntu is engineered to run across different devices, and it’s engineered to scale up to higher-end devices.

What advantages do you have over Android as a smartphone OS?

With Android, it’s implicit that if you want to run Google services then there’s a levy associated with that. Our model is entirely different. We’re working with industry partners who want to have more influence over the way services are provided to end users. We won’t try to lock people into licensing our services.

Windows already straddles the divide between x86 and ARM. Has Microsoft stolen a march on you?

“Microsoft generates uncertainty and conflict…”

We compete with them, in that sense. There are ways in which Windows is a very costly OS to build hardware on. We have an alternative approach that is more software-based, more collaborative, more open, and offers more promise for developers who want their apps to run on desktops, phones, TVs and so on.

Microsoft generates uncertainty and conflict in the way it’s trying to gain market share. They’re in conflict with their own hardware partners. There’s a very different stance in the way we propose to work with people.

Ubuntu for Android

Many people are waiting on mobile Ubuntu because they want to see boundaries pushed and the market disrupted. Won’t your first phone jar with those types of users?

Not if we’re clear about where we want to take Ubuntu. We’re planning to very quickly follow our initial launch with a high-end converged device, which will have high-performing system components that will allow Ubuntu to run as a desktop OS when docked. It’ll also have full access to the Ubuntu Software Center. So we need to be clear about our roadmap — we don’t have tunnel vision around low-end products.

Speaking of which, are you okay with how long it’s taking Ubuntu for Android to come to market?

It takes a long time to release a software-based product and turn it into a hardware-based product. But I can tell you that you might not have much longer to wait before you see something on that side.

Makin’ money

You’re not going to be like Microsoft or Google, but how will you make money?

The simplest model would be per-unit licensing. Then there’s also the fact that hardware manufacturers and carriers don’t want to focus on software. They want people like us to manage that on their behalf and it might be possible to commercialize that.

So you’d directly look after the software — including updates, for example?

Yes, absolutely. There’s no fragmentation in terms of the way we will progress our OS. Each update will come on a six-monthly basis and manufacturers will be able to rely on that. They’ll be able to deliver their services without worrying about OS versions.

How would those services run regardless of OS version?

Because often those types of services will be web-based. With Ubuntu, web applications can feel more like part of the main operating system. We can make them feel very native.

Will you try to advertize on mobile Ubuntu?

That has to be done in conjunction with carriers and manufacturers. But part of what we’re doing with the OS is providing direct access to services that the user has subscribed to, and putting them in the main UI — like with Amazon.

The Future

Where do you want to be in two years’ time?

I want to be shipping in mass volume, in the millions of units, and for Ubuntu to be recognized globally as one of the major platforms. Our analysis says there’s the opportunity to gain a 7-8 percent market share by 2016. There’s a window of opportunity for a new player to capture that kind of share.

02 Firefox logo Japan Could Get Mozilla Firefox OS SmartphonesJapan has been identified as a possible market where smartphones running on the Mozilla Firefox operating system will appear, despite the fact that smartphones on that mobile operating system would mainly target emerging markets such as South America, and with Japan being an established and mature market, we do wonder what’s up with this rumor. Well, I guess a rumor’s a rumor, so let us leave it as that at the moment.

The closest it has come to being real was word from the president of auKDDI, who spoke at an HTML 5 event, that they will consider rolling out Firefox OS handsets handsets later in 2013, and that is about all the detail divulged, leading us to make educated guesses by ourselves. One ought to take note that Mozilla’s mobile platform will be based wholly on HTML 5. So far, the two companies that we know have manufactured Firefox OS smartphones would be ZTE and TLC, and we could very well see their finished products arrive via KDDI in due time.

Fedora’s Linux distribution may be competing with Ubuntu for the title of silliest update name, but that doesn’t diminish the impact of what are often significant revisions. See the just-launched Fedora 18 as an example: while it’s called Spherical Cow, it introduces both a simpler installer to replace an aging predecessor as well as the option of using the Gnome 3-based Cinnamon desktop we recently saw in Linux Mint 13. There’s also FedFS, a file system that provides unity between multiple file servers, and newer versions of both Sugar and XFCE for those who prefer different interfaces.
