Apple unveils its latest desktop operating system: OS X Mavericks, coming this fall

DNP Apple unveils its latest desktop operating system OS X 109

Developer conferences have taken a turn in recent years, becoming as much an opportunity for companies to interact with the dev community as a platform for launching hardware outside larger all-industry shows. This year’s WWDC, however, has been all about the software thus far. Apple has, as anticipated, given the world its first glimpse of its latest desktop operating system. The Mountain Lion followup shifts away from the big cat naming, to a California-themed release: Mavericks, paying homage to the giant wave surfing spot.

The first new feature is finder tabs: a browser-like system based in windows. Just add a tab by clicking plus in a window. You can also finally take the Finder full-screen. Also new, tagging. You can tag files based on location and other details, making them much searchable. There’s a tagging sidebar that’ll let you view them all in one handy place. Multiple Displays got a big cheer as well, letting you view menus across screens, viewing different apps in full screen mode on each display. You can independently pan on displays as well, and AirPlay connected HDTVs work a full, connected display. Apple showed off the new functionality to big cheers in the developer-packed room.

Siri For Mac Could Appear In OS X 10.9 According To Job Listing

Siri For Mac Could Appear In OS X 10.9 According To Job ListingBack in September of 2012, a patent by Apple surfaced which suggested that perhaps Siri could be coming to Mac OS in the future, and rumors of OS X 10.9 also suggested that Siri and Maps could be integrated into the computer OS as well. As it stands there is no official word from Apple regarding that possibility, but a job listing spotted by Apple Insider has revealed possible plans as well, thus making the rumors and speculation a bit more believable.

The job calls for a Siri UI Engineer and according to some of the qualities the candidate should possess, it reads, “Familiarity with Unix, especially Mac OS X […] Passion for the Macintosh platform and writing simple, elegant software that is easy and fun to use.” Since Siri is currently limited to iOS, the requirement of familiarity with Mac OS X is rather interesting. Obviously no word on if this holds any merit, or when it will launch, but some believe Siri for Mac OS X could be announced for version 10.9. Either way we’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys think? Anyone looking forward to having Siri on your Mac?

The Next Version of OS X Is Already Surfing the Web

Several Apple-watching sites have taken a look at their web logs, and they’ve found that they’ve been visited by computers sporting an OS X 10.9 identification string. It’s pretty easy to spoof an identification string, but several sites–including 9to5Mac–have confirmed that some of the OS X 10.9 strings are coming from Apple’s corporate network, so they’re most likely legitimate. Plus, the resolution on some of the hits is the same as the 15″ Retina MacBook Pro. (more…)
