Logitech to announce Wireless Webcam for Mac

In the past, Logitech didn’t make a lot of effort to support the OS X community. However, in recent months and years, they’ve been doing a better job at adding OS X support to its various offerings of keyboards and mice, as well as a few webcams. However, the company has never really released a top-of-the-line webcam that was truly made for Mac users, but that day seems to be almost here.

Logitech is said to announce a new wireless webcam specifically for Mac. A listing on B&H Photo’s website shows the new webcam in all its glory. We’re not really sure if Logitech will actually just call it the “Wireless Webcam for Mac” or not, but they’ve used other basic names in the past, so we wouldn’t be surprised if that’s what they end up going with.

We’re guessing the webcam will come equipped with 1080p recording capabilities and will obviously be wireless. Just from looking at the photos, it looks like it has some sort of indicator at the top, which could be a universal indicator that can be used with an assortment of different Mac apps.

The new webcam has a price tag of $180 on the B&H website, which is pretty ridiculous for a webcam, even a wireless one. Then again, B&H likes to charge higher prices for a lot of items that you can easily buy on Amazon for a lot cheaper. Hopefully we’ll find out more details when Logitech makes it official soon.

Jonathan Ive tribute to Steve Jobs video rings true one year later

This Friday is the one-year anniversary of the passing of Steve Jobs, and one of the most moving – and interesting – tributes remains the speech given by Jonathan Ive on the 19th of October, 2011, at a private Apple event. This private ceremony displayed giant images of Jobs with his own Mac computer and smiles abound, while Ive reminisced on not just the way his late associate worked, but how he thought and acted as well. It’s in this video that you’ll get another taste of Jobs’ father’s “back of the cabinet” philosophy as well.

This video goes through a wave of design-related subject matter including the power of trying, failing and persevering, the power of ideas, and more on how Jobs certainly appeared to be a human creation machine. “Bold, crazy, magnificent ideas” as well as “dopey” ideas – all of this is important in the design process, notes Ive, and Jobs understood that, he makes sure to let the crowd understand.

There’s also a few stories that’ll make you giggle. One of them includes a process that Ive went through each time he traveled with Jobs in which they’d check in to a hotel, Ive would go up to his room, and Jobs would call him up saying “hey Jonny this hotel sucks.” And then they’d go to a different hotel – but it all ties in to the narrative that Ive creates for Jobs. One of a man who at the same time didn’t assume that they’d be successful but always had faith that they’d make something great.

Take a minute (or 7 and a half) to watch the video and keep your eyes peeled for more stories about Jobs that pop up over the next few days leading up to the end of this week. Have a peek at our Apple portal as well for all the new news regarding the products left in Jobs wake.

Modbook Pro OS X Mountain Lion tablet launches with SSD

It’s time to get your MacBook Pro action on with a modified tablet design from Modbook Pro, announced today once again in a 13.3-inch iteration for release on October 3rd. The folks at Modbook have a strange situation on their hands, one where they’re somehow or another able to side-step the lock-out that exists around Apple’s OS X and create tablet computers that are, essentially, MacBook Pro units without the keyboard and a touchscreen up front. Today’s announcement also adds an SSD to the mix for you hardcore solid-state lovers.

This device will be appearing as a 13.3-inch Mac-based pen tablet computer. You’ve got a 64GB solid-state drive inside, upgrade possible to 480GB internal SSD storage, and a ship-date for online purchases of the device for as early as mid-November. This device combines the original hardware of an Apple MacBook Pro with OS X Mountain Lion with a digitizer from Wacom for 512 levels of pen pressure sensitivity. Also in the mix is a ForceGlass pen interface and the ability to work with Microsoft Windows 7 as well.

If you purchase the base configuration of this machine, you’ll be getting Modbook Inc’s own original 64GB Nishara-class SATA 3 SSD with NAND technology – and you’ve got the option to work with a bigger more powerful beast as well, of course, with up to 480GB of storage. With NAND technology you’ll have the best speed and performance available with flash-based storage, and you’ll have no moving parts – better for the long run.

Sales of this Modbook Pro will begin on Wednesday and will have customers living in the United States – or at least whose mailing addresses are in the USA – getting shipment in starting in November. The Modbook team lets everyone know the following about each Modbook purchase, and makes it clear that this is not an original product in and of itself, but a modification of a product originally manufactured by Apple.

The Modbook Pro is an enclosure conversion kit designed to exclusively contain an original MacBook Pro base system manufactured by Apple Inc. Apple Inc.’s one-year warranty on the base system is voided by the conversion and replaced with the Modbook Pro Protection Plan, which covers the entire hardware solution, including the base system.

Let us know if you’re into the idea of the Modbook Pro, or if you think people should just stick with the iPad and leave the real power to the notebook universe!

OS X Lion hits 10.7.5 with most recent update, brings improved security with Gatekeeper

OS X Lion hits 10.7.5 with most recent update, brings improved security with Gatekeeper

While the latest software for OS X Lion isn’t nearly as exciting as a couple of other updates that Apple released today, Lion users will find a few worthwhile improvements within the new OS X 10.7.5 update. Most importantly, the latest software introduces Gatekeeper, a security feature from Mountain Lion that makes it more difficult to inadvertently install malicious software. The update also brings improved WiFi reliability for the iMac (late 2009 and newer) and squashes a bug that’d caused Launchpad icons to become rearranged. You’ll find an even greater number of fixes / improvements after the break, and it’s also worth a mention that even Snow Leopard users have received a bit of love today in the form of a security update. Want to prove you’re a good cat owner? Go ahead and check for new updates right away.

Microsoft brings Retina display support to Office for Mac

Microsoft brings Retina display support to Office for Mac

Microsoft brought Office for Mac 2011 up to speed with Mountain Lion this summer, and it’s now back with another update that finally adds support for the MacBook Pro’s Retina display. That comes courtesy of version 14.2.4 of the software suite, and that added sharpness naturally extends across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. You can find the update waiting for you in the Microsoft AutoUpdate tool if you haven’t been prompted to download it already.

Apple releases OS X 10.8.2 update for Mountain Lion: Facebook integration, iMessage fixes and more

Apple releases OS X 1082 update for Mountain Lion Facebook integration, iMessage fixes and more

Looks like one major software update wasn’t enough, as Apple is following its push of iOS 6 with OS X 10.8.2. Weighing in at 697.54MB, it’s a pretty substantial update for Mountain Lion users, with that long-awaited Facebook integration chief among the changes. As Twitter presently operates within the OS, Facebook will now too enjoy single sign-on simplicity, and all of OS X’s sharing portals will now include Facebook as an option. You’ll get Facebook notifications in Notification Center, and you can share Game Center scores with your Facebook pals. It’s also being reported that this build restores laptop battery life levels to those seen with Lion.

Other new features include the addition of Power Nap for the Late 2010 MacBook Air, a few iMessage tweaks (iMessages sent to your phone number will now appear on your Mac), a new shared Reminders list and the ability to receive FaceTime calls initially sent to your phone number. Passbook users will also enjoy the newfangled ability to add passes right from Safari and Mail, and Dictation now understands Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Korean, Canadian English (!), Canadian French and Italian. We’re installing the update now, and you can peek the full changelog after the break. Feel free to toss your post-install impressions in comments as well.

Zorro Macsk review: instantly add touchscreen functionality to your 21.5-inch iMac

DNP Zorro Macsk review instantly add touchscreen functionality to your 215inch iMac

Over the years we’ve come across a few signs that pointed to the possibility of touchscreen-enabled iMacs, but Steve Jobs had already dismissed this as a possibility for current Mac form factors. Quoting the man at the “Back to the Mac” keynote from two years ago: “It gives great demo, but after a while your arm feels like it’s going to fall off. Touch surfaces want to be horizontal.”

So perhaps our fantasy’s still stuck in the “research project” phase.

Luckily, the more adventurous touchscreen lovers can look to third-party solutions. For MacBooks you have Axiotron’s Modbook, except you lose the keyboard and you can’t perform the modification yourself. As for iMacs and Cinema Displays, we’ve been following Troll Touch for its resistive touchscreen replacement panels, but they aren’t exactly affordable and most of them have to be installed by the company. Even its user-installable SlipCover series starts from $899, anyway.

This leaves us with the Zorro Macsk, a cheekily named iMac accessory hailing from TMDtouch of Shenzhen, China. The 21.5-inch model is priced at just $199 on Amazon with no modifications required. Plus, it supports multitouch — a glaring omission from Troll Touch’s Mac lineup. So is this truly a bargain? Or is it just a case of “you get what you pay for?” Follow past the break to see how we got on with the Zorro Macsk.
