How to Get the Classic Mac Sounds Back Into OS X Mountain Lion [How To]

This morning I had a bad case of nostalgia. I listened to the classic “Quack” Macintosh system alert sound in a YouTube video and I thought about the good old days, when computing felt magical and smelled of new. More »

Apple now most valuable public company in history

On Monday, August 20th, 2012, Apple became the new most valuable United States-made company in the history of the world. Their market capitalization has surpassed that of Microsoft’s previous record of $618.9 billion, that amount having been set back in November of 1999. The current market capitalization of Apple is $622.6 billion, with 936,596,000 outstanding shares as of June 30, 2012 – we’re guessing that everyone reading this post wishes that they’d invested in the company when they had the chance, of course.

This feat comes after an all-time high share price was reached for a second consecutive session today for Apple, reaching up to $664.74 in the morning hours. The highest that Apple has gotten with their market capitalization total today (thus far) has been $623.1 billion. We’re expecting Microsoft to be left in the dust, at this point, but of course it must be recognized that with cash adjustments for time, the latter company might still be on top.

Comparing such things is like comparing the Dream Team to the 2012 USA Olympic basketball team, however, as Microsoft’s current value just is not up for snuff. Apple shares are currently continuing to stay on the rise as they head towards an Autumn season with several new launches (if the rumors are all true). Apple may well have a new iPad mini, iPhone, and more by the time the holiday season begins.

Apple surpassed Exxon earlier this year to be the fifth company in history to have a market capitalization higher than $500 billion. Have a peek at our Apple portal to see what the company has been up to lately, and get pumped up about their new line of devices which may very well be released inside the next month!

Retina MacBook Pro gets Moshi protection up front

If surface protection for your Retina MacBook Pro is what you’re after, Moshi has the accessories for you – this week announcing both a new palm rest and screen protector for the masses. This set of accessories, the iVisor screen protector and the PalmGuard palm rest protector are set to keep your device looking sharp in combination with no less than Moshi’s ClearGuard keyboard protector too!

This comprehensive collection of guards for your device will keep your display, your keys, and the area under your wrists ready for action and looking fabulous. This is always the aim with the folks at Moshi, a group that aims for fashionability and great aesthetics in their designs whether they’re made to protect or made to connect with your electronic gadgets.

With the PalmGuard you’ve got the following key features ready for action:

• Color-matched with the MacBook’s aluminum finish
• Precisely machined to cover the entire palm rest area
• Comes bundled with a matching protective film for the MacBook’s trackpad
• Semi-rigid film protects against grease, dust, and stains, scratches and corrosion
• Durable, can last through multiple re-applications

The ClearGuard keyboard protector keeps your keyboard clean with high transparency film that’s just 0.1mm thin. This cover is made of thermoplastic urethan (durable, non-toxic, engineering-grade) and is both washable and reusable.

Finally you’ll find that the iVisor Pro for the Retina MacBook Pro (15-inch version, of course), you’ll get guaranteed bubble-free installation “with minimum effort.” This iVisor Pro is updated with a new bit of multilayer coating over Moshi’s previous solution, here bringing on screen clarity with glare reduction in tow. This solution also has the ability to be washed and re-applied more than once, with Moshi’s own “resilient polymer adhesive” making it all possible.

You can check them all out over at Moshi’s product page right this minute, and don’t forget to head down to our timeline of Moshi products as well to keep up to date on all things fashion-friendly!

Humble Bundle 3 launches for Android, OS X, Windows, and Linux

The newest Humble Bundle package of cross-platform games has been released to the public, once again bringing on several fabulous apps for a “pay what you want” price and contributions to charity in tow. This offer brings on now only four games (and a fifth if you pay above the average price), it comes with soundtracks from two of the games in both FLAC and MP3 format! The games Fieldrunners, BIT.TRIP BEAT, SpaceChem, and Uplink are included in the normal bundle, and if you pay more than the average paid price (currently $6.07), you get the game Spirits as well!

This offer supports both Child’s Play Charity and the Electronic Frontier Foundation in addition to the folks at Humble Bundle that put the offer together and the developers that created the games. Have a peek at a trailer for the game collection here, and get pumped up for the package!

While the full supported devices and software builds list is here for each of the games, you’ll find that if your device is relatively new, you’ll be set. Strange devices such as the Orange San Diego and the HTC Wildfire S are not included with games such as BIT.TRIP BEAT, for example.

If you purchased each of these games separately, you’d have payed somewhere around $52 USD, but with Humble Bundle, you’ll pay whatever you decide is right. This release is the first that several of these games will be popping up on Android and Linux – so it’s also a double-whammy!

If you head over to Humble Bundle right this second, you’ll be able to move sliders back and forth for how much cash out of your contribution you want to go to the Developers, how much you want to go to Charity, and how much you want to push as a Humble Tip. Make a standard payment amount or go custom priced!

Editorial: when the ecosystem is the product, picking a favorite isn’t easy

You Are Your Ecosystems

Have you ever taken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator personality test? If not, you will eventually fail in a happy hour when people compare their personality-type acronyms. I took the test years ago, and have no recollection of my official personality type. ENTJ (Extroverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Judging)? ISFP (Introverted, Sensual, Feeling, Perceiving)? No idea.

But I can tell you this: I am a WiBG digital citizen. That is my Ecosystem Type Indicator. Back to that in a minute. First, some ecosystem history.

Tweetbot for Mac’s latest alpha adds experimental ‘snap-together’ column layout

Tweetbot for Mac Alpha version adds 'snaptogether' experimental column layout

Tweetbot‘s been offering a rough-around-the-edges alpha version on its upcoming refresh for a few weeks now, but it’s the latest update that’s caught our attention — again. There’s several substantial changes that could tempt you away from other desktop Twitter clients. These include a new multiple account view, with separate columns that can either be docked to your main feed or left in their own window. You can spin out mentions and search results into their own space, and even adjust each column’s height and width — if you’re looking to squeeze even more Twitter content into a single screen. A new menu bar icon offers access to your multiple accounts, new tweets, direct messages and mentions, while the latest build also improves support for media upload and Mountain Lion‘s notification bar. Tweetbot’s alpha is still free to try for now, but once the kinks are eventually worked out, expect to pay for the finished article.

Poll: Is Mountain Lion devouring your Mac’s battery life?

Poll Is Mountain Lion devouring your Mac's battery life

We’ve seen plenty of users report that Apple’s latest OS, Mountain Lion, has caused a massive drop in battery life. While we haven’t been able to confirm any decrease in longevity with our own OS 10.8 machines, which include previous generation MacBook Pros and the company’s latest Retina model, it’s clear that some of you who were able to get the operating system downloaded and installed have experienced some not-so-favorable side effects with your Pros and MacBook Airs. While there are plenty of theories, there has yet to be a fix, though Apple is reportedly investigating the issue. This isn’t the first time users have reported decreased battery life after an OS update, with a lengthy support thread popping up after Lion’s release last year. So, how has the upgrade affected you? Sound off in the poll below to let us know.

Tweetbot for Mac adds multi-column timeline and slimline UI

Tweetbot for Mac has been updated, bringing support for multiple columns that can show different feeds, hashtags, searches and even accounts all stacked together like TweetDeck. The new version – v0.6.3, still considered an alpha by Tapbots – also pares back the UI with a new, slimmer look, and better support for Mountain Lion‘s Notifications system.

There’s also a Menu bar icon, flagging up new tweets along with mentions and direct messages, together with the option to publish a new message yourself. Image sharing has been made more flexible, along with URL shortening and video uploads, with the ability to configure your own choice of services.

Released in its first alpha form for OS X last month, Tweetbot for Mac was hotly anticipated after being widely adopted in iOS form. This new update, however, makes it all the more competitive against Twitter app stalwart TweetDeck; clicking the new gear icon in the lower corner allows you to duplicate the current view into its own column, which can be done repeatedly.

Those columns can then be docked together and the whole UI moved as one. Currently a free download, you can get the new alpha version by choosing update in the app itself, or by downloading it here.

Apple reports 3 million Mountain Lion downloads in four days, ‘most successful OS X release’

We heard some rumblings ahead of the weekend from third-party sources, and like clockwork, Apple has kicked the week off with its weekend box office returns. According to Cupertino’s numbers, the latest version of OS X hit 3 million downloads in four days, making for “the most successful OS X release in Apple’s history.” Price has surely played a role in Mountain Lion’s speedy success, running $20 for 200-plus features, according to Apple’s numbers. That list includes big additions like Notification Center and AirPlay Mirroring and a selection of smaller tweaks to the decade-old operating system. More information can be found in the customarily self-congratulatory press release, after the break.
