Microsoft explains Outlook.com outage, provides long-term fixes

Microsoft resolves Outlookcom outage, offers explanation and longterm fix

It may have taken three days, but Microsoft has officially resolved its Outlook.com outage — and it has both explanations and long-term solutions for affected email users. Trouble began with the failure of a caching service for Exchange ActiveSync. The resulting deluge of reconnection attempts promptly overwhelmed company servers; a slow recovery was necessary to avoid another meltdown, Microsoft says. To prevent repeat incidents, the tech giant is both upgrading its network capacity and implementing a more elegant error handling system. While the fixes likely come too late for some users, they suggest that Microsoft has learned a hard lesson about the fragility of online services.

New York Times Web Site Is Still Offline

New York Times Web Site Is Still OfflineJust earlier this morning, we did bring you word that Microsoft’s Outlook service has experienced an outage, and it seems that Microsoft is not the only one suffering from such a malady, as the New York Times’ website has been offline, and still is offline as at press time. Just what is going on today? When approached, a representative for the New York Times’s owner has confirmed that the site is down without divulging any details as to why it is so, while a tweet from one of the blogs has pointed the blame finger squarely at the all encompassing “technical problems” reason – or should we say, excuse?

One ought to take note that the New York Times Co. happens to be the owner of the Boston Globe right now, but the Boston Globe’s website remains up and running without any issues. Certainly this outage proves that while the Internet is a fantastic place for print media to take a leap into the paperless future, there still is some room left for traditional newspapers. After all, I just love the smell of a freshly printed paper, not to mention you can always use these old papers to clean your glass doors and windows after scrunching them up nice and good. Hopefully the folks handling the New York Times’ website will be able to get things up and running quickly, otherwise heads might roll. Image courtesy of CNET.

    Microsoft Outlook Outage Reported

Microsoft Outlook Outage ReportedIf you are an online service provider and your service happens to undergo an outage, it would definitely make many people unhappy. Of course, if your service happens to be widely used but not indispensable, then it would irritate a wide percentage of folks, but it is not really a life or death issue. However, when you have a service like Outlook from Microsoft and it happens to be down, then you’re in a quite a bit of a spot, no? Microsoft is already well aware of the situation and they have noted on the Updates segment in their status page, “We’re working on the problem and will provide an update by August 14 11:00 AM. Thank you for your patience.”

I guess if Outlook is having issues, that would also mean services such as Hotmail, Messenger and SkyDrive will not be up and running without glitches, either. What do you think could have caused this? Hardware issues or is it some sort of software compromise somewhere? One thing is for sure though, it would be best if Microsoft’s engineers are able to figure out just what is happening at the moment and sort everything out as soon as possible so that the world can carry on as it used to be.

Yes internet, Outlook is down (Update 2: Service mostly restored)

    Yes internet, Outlook is down

We’re not sure how you managed to send us those messages, but you did — a lot of you. Seems Outlook has been experiencing all sorts of issues. Microsoft’s privy to that fact, and we assume looking into it as we speak, noting on its status page, “We’re having a problem accessing email. You might not be able to see all your email messages.” Looks like Hotmail, Messenger and SkyDrive are having some issues right now, as well. We’re reaching out to Redmond to find out exactly what’s up.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: Microsoft got back to us to say it is aware of the issue and looking into it. It claims that, whatever the problem is, it’s only affecting a small number of Outlook and SkyDrive users. You can check the Live status page here for the most recent updates.

Update 2: Looks like MS has been able to restore access for most users, though some are still having issues. Here’s a followup statement from the company, “Outlook.com experienced an incident that caused some users not to be able to access their account or share their SkyDrive files. We have restored web access for all users but some people might still see issues with their mobile devices. We are working to restore full mobile access as quickly as possible.”

Freeview hit with ‘major technical issues’ on Sony DVD recorders after update

Freeview hit with 'major technical issues' on Sony DVD recorders after update

If Freeview is down on your Sony device in the UK, don’t worry: you’re not alone. Sony has tweeted that the service isn’t working on many of its DVD recorders, like the RDR-HXD870, following a recent firmware update. The company said that “it appears something has change(d) in the way these devices are receiving EPG data from (Freeview operator) Arqiva,” adding that some Pioneer DVD players are also affected. It’s still trying to get to the bottom of the issue, but pointed to several temporary fixes on its community forums that might tide you over (check the More Coverage link). If that doesn’t do it, you’ll have to wait for new firmware or get your TV fix elsewhere.

Twitch.tv is down, users will need to reset their passwords when it’s restored (update: it’s back)

Videogame focused live video streaming platform (and new Xbox 360 / Xbox One partner) Twitch.tv is down at the moment, but even once it’s restored users will have to reset their passwords and stream keys. That information comes directly from the site’s official blog, which blames the issue on a caching problem with its web CDN partner. Some users are worried the site may have been hacked since prior to its shutdown, many suddenly found themselves viewing accounts that belonged to other people and now all the login information has been cleared. The company continues to state that isn’t the case and belief to the contrary is related to an outdated outage message featuring a logo tied to its company hack week. It should be back up shortly, but apparently “10s of millions of accounts resets takes quite a bit of time.”

    Update: It’s back!

Twitter acknowledges site issues, has engineers on the job (update: fixed)

Yes, we know. We’re seeing the robot with the broken hand, too. Just think of this as a little extra time to craft that perfect @ reply. Twitter acknowledged that some users are having issues with the site at the moment, but promised that it’s got its best people on the job. That little ‘bot should have its limb reattached in no time, kids.

Update: After roughly 25 minutes of downtime, Twitter’s back online.

Whelp, Google Docs is down at the moment.

Gmail, Drive, other Google apps down for some (update: back up)

    Google Apps down for some

Vital Google services down for you? Well, you’re not alone. Tips have been pouring in this AM that many of Mountain View’s apps are down, including Gmail and Drive. We were able to independently confirm the partial outage and Google’s App Status Dashboard has been updated to reflect the “service disruption.” The down time isn’t affecting everyone, however. Most of those hanging around the Engadget compound are still able to check their hate mail and Caskers notifications. Are you having trouble getting through to Google’s servers? Let us know in the comments.

Update: According to the App Status Dashboard, everything should be a-okay now.

iMessage And FaceTime Down For A While

iMessage And FaceTime Down For A WhileThe world ground to a halt for some moments earlier today, and I am referring to those who use Apple’s iMessage and FaceTime services, as both services were actually disrupted, so it is a good thing that they are up and running normally once again. Apparently, this particular issue did not affect everyone, but only some users, which would surely prove to be an irritating experience especially when you have in mind to communicate with someone else, be it on a business or personal basis, using iMessage and/or FaceTime.

According to Apple, the system status page showed that users were unable to place FaceTime calls and the same applied to sending/receiving iMessages within the time that spanned from 3:11 p.m. ET to 8:20 p.m. ET. This provided a window of 5 hours or so for frustrated users to air their rants over Twitter, and through the same medium, they celebrated the return of iMessage and FaceTime services. No idea on what was the cause behind the downtime though, perhaps there was a code gremlin hanging around somewhere that decided to be mischievous.
