Microsoft’s Outlook.com email service suffered a massive 16-hour outage yesterday, which saw users unable to access parts of SkyDrive, Hotmail, and Outlook, too. Microsoft has revealed that it was a result of a mischievous firmware upgrade—which caused “a rapid and substantial temperature spike in the datacenter”. More »
Web accelerator CloudFlare is having network-wide DNS issues, and it looks like all sites that use it as a front-end proxy are down as a result. The company has confirmed the outage with a Tweet that says: “we’re experencing a network-wide issue. Looking into the root cause”. If you have a site using it, you could always try to revert back to your old DNS settings, but I think that they will most likely solve it before any change in those settings will have propagated to the Internet. We’ve reached out to Google for a response. You’ll know more as soon as we do.
Update: Looks like everything’s back in working order. You can quit complaining about it on Facebook now.

Twitter Outage Being Worked On
Posted in: Today's ChiliFor a social networking tool such as Twitter to experience an outage can be said to be an outrage for users, but to have the outage happen twice in a single month has been deemed as unacceptable to many. Apparently, there was another outage for the popular micro blogging service earlier today, where plenty of users ran into issues when they tried to access Twitter.com as well as third party mobile applications for Twitter, but it must also be noted that the Twitter service had also been restored to many users since then. Apart from that, the new video sharing service from Twitter known as Vine also had service disruption issues.
Twitter posted on their status blog earlier this morning, “Some users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.” A similar message was posted on Inauguration Day as well, but on the whole, Twitter has managed to improve its service by a substantial margin over the years as they made efforts to increase their server capacity in order to cope with its growing user base. Is Twitter still down for you?

Facebook Outage
Posted in: Today's ChiliWell, earlier this morning we talked about how PayPal experienced an outage, and here we are with word that Facebook, the world’s most popular social network, too, has experienced an outage. Thing is, when you type in the “www” prefix, you will be able to access your Facebook account, but just typing in “facebook.com” to enter into the root domain will yield a no go. Not only that, there are reports making their way around online that Chrome users seem to be the majority who are affected by the outage.
While performing some digital forensics, it seemed that at approximately 5:15 p.m. Pacific Time, this issue started to crop up for Facebook users who realized that they were unable to access the page. It is a high possibility that this will be a service disruption, and it remains to be seen whether the Facebook outage is part of an internal gremlin wreaking havoc, as history has shown that such a thing happened in October last year no thanks to a DNS misrouting blip. Perhaps if Facebook is down for you, now might be a good time to, you know, socialize with real people.

AT&T confirms widespread outage in Missouri and Kansas (update: service restored)
Posted in: Today's ChiliBad news if you’re an AT&T customer in Missouri or Kansas: the company just confirmed there’s a widespread outage affecting inbound and outbound calls, text messages and mobile data. It’s unclear if every market in Missouri and Kansas is off the grid right now, but users on Facebook and Twitter are reporting problems in major cities like Springfield, Kansas City, Wichita and Topeka. AT&T hasn’t shared any more details about the issue or when it expects to restore full service; just that it’s working on it.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: An AT&T rep has confirmed to us that service has been restored.

Blackberry users suffer fresh server chills across UK, Europe, Africa (update: it’s a Vodafone problem)
Posted in: Today's ChiliIt’s 2013 and RIM’s BlackBerry servers seem to be as grumpy as ever — and totally oblivious to the need for happy headlines in the run up to January 30th. We’re hearing from multiple readers that BB servers are down in the UK, while Vodafone has confirmed that its customers are having problems, with the biggest casualty being push email. Meanwhile, BlackBerry UK’s Twitter feed says the outage is the result of “Vodafone service issues” and is affecting “some customers” across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. We’ll update if we hear more.
Update: An early statement from Vodafone gave no hint that it was responsible for the outage, and merely said it was “working closely” with RIM to fix it. However, this does now look like a Vodafone problem. The company’s African offshoot, Vodacom, has seen fit to apologize on Twitter and has said services in that continent are now being restored, though a backlog of data could cause delays.

Where were you during the great Netflix outage of Christmas 2012? If you were home attempting to enjoy your holiday break by attempting to access Netflix, then you know it was impossible to access its Instant Streaming service as it was completely crippled due to Amazon’s issues with their ELBs. It looks as though people who are on holiday break between today and tomorrow to celebrate the coming new year will have to go without their Netflix fix as the service has been experiencing extended outages for the majority of the day.
The reports of Netflix’s downtime have come in through a number of sources including Sitedown.co and DownRightNow, with the most vocal reports coming directly from Twitter users who were hoping to cuddle up with a good movie on their day off from work.
As of now, Netflix has yet to officially announce the downtime through their official channels, but we’ll keep an eye out for any changes throughout the day. For now, it looks like you Netflix users will have to find your entertainment elsewhere until Netflix gets over this current outage. Might we recommend YouTube?
[Update: Netflix has released this official statement in regards to today’s service disruption:
“We are experiencing some technical difficulty with the Netflix DVD Web site, which as a result may not be available for all members. Our engineers are working to address this issue. Netflix streaming is not impacted.”]

Xbox Live outage temporarily disconnecting cloud storage for some users (update: restored, free month of XBL)
Posted in: Today's ChiliMicrosoft added a cloud storage feature to the Xbox 360 in its fall 2011 dashboard update, but today an outage has taken it offline for the last several hours and counting. As noted by Joystiq, trying to access your cloud saves is resulting in a 0x807b0198 error for many, although other parts of XBL like streaming video services and multiplayer gaming profiles are unaffected. For the moment, we were able to copy/move some of our saves from the cloud cache on our hard drive (Settings –> storage –> cloud storage) to the normal hard drive section, and access them from there. Your mileage may vary, but otherwise you’ll just need to keep an eye out the XBL dashboard status page to see when things are back to normal. There’s no word yet on when it will be fully restored, but a message there says engineers are working on a fix. We’re not missing the old “gamertag recovery” feature the cloud system replaced and upgraded, but any significant outage is certainly enough to make us think about keeping our saves backed up on a memory card in a safe place — just in case.
Update: We noticed our cloud saves were back online early Sunday although the status page indicated work was continuing, and now (3AM ET~ Monday) Major Nelson and Xbox Support have tweeted that the issues are resolved. Additionally, General Manager of Xbox Live Alex Garden said in a post on MN’s blog that the reason it took so long to restore was to ensure the integrity of all game saves. The small silver lining for those affected? A free month of Xbox Live Gold will be automatically added to their subscriptions.

Video-streaming Xmas cheer restored for Netflix users as AWS outage gets fixed for affected devices
Posted in: Today's ChiliDid this Christmas’ Netflix outage have you and yours “bah humbuging” whilst picking through that collection of physical discs for solace? Fret no more, as the apparent Amazon Web Services outage behind the problem (which brought the service down on many-a-device) is now a officially a mark in Christmas Past. Within the last hour, Netflix announced via its Twitter accounts that its Instant Watch offerings are now “back to normal streaming levels.” While it’s not exactly a Christmas miracle, we’re sure many are delighted to finally be viewing Hollywood’s holiday cheer on their newly unwrapped gizmos.
