Lenovo IdeaPhone P770 stuffs 29hour battery and Jelly Bean into a lowercost smartphone

Motorola may face a new contender to the Droid RAZR MAXX HD’s battery capacity crown. Lenovo’s quietly introduced IdeaPhone P770 at least theoretically challenges its American counterpart by cramming a 3,500mAh lithium polymer battery into a thicker 11.9mm (0.47-inch) body. That’s 200mAh more than Motorola’s energy champion, and enough for the company to flaunt a 29-hour talk time. That’s not quite as long as Motorola’s claimed 32 hours, but Lenovo has done something its American rival seemingly can’t — launch a phone with Jelly Bean. Motorola might rest easier in knowing that the the P770 is an unrepentantly budget-focused behemoth, carrying a 4.5-inch qHD display, a (possibly MediaTek-made) 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 4GB of built-in storage, an 8GB microSD card and both 5-megapixel rear as well as VGA front cameras. For the ¥1,699 ($273) Lenovo is asking for an off-contract model in its native China, the P770 could still be the first pick of many local phone owners on long-haul trips. It’s just a shame that the lack of 4G (and Lenovo’s domestic-first mobile strategy) likely means we won’t see a launch in the US.

Lenovo P770 with 3500 mAh Battery Announced

For the ump-teenth time, the rumors were once again spot on. It was just a few weeks ago when we wrote to you about an Android smartphone from Lenovo that was rumored to sport a 3500 mAh battery. Well, Lenovo has finally unveiled the Lenovo P770 today and it does have a gargantuan 3500 mAh battery that, according to the company, has a standby time of 644 hours. Apart from the impressive battery capacity, the Lenovo P770 also runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

It has a 4.5-inch qHD high-definition display with a 960 × 540 resolution (sorry, no 1080p here) and it powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. The Lenovo P770 also features a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera and a VGA front-facing camera. Unfortunately though, the device is only available in China, at least for now. It sells for 1,699 CNY or roughly $273 based on today’s exchange rate.

Lenovo P770 Android smartphone has a 3500mAh battery

As smartphones start to incorporate more and more functions into each iteration down the road, it goes without saying that battery life would be one of the first to suffer. Well, we have seen some monster batteries for smartphones recently, such as the RAZR Maxx and the RAZR Maxx HD which tops out at 3,300mAh – but here is a new king of the hill, with the soon-to-come Lenovo P770 Android-powered smartphone which will carry a 3,500mAh battery.

No idea on what kind of functions the Lenovo P770 will offer, but we do hope that it will be a power packed device considering how it has such a long lasting battery. Could this be the start of the race to hit the 4,000mAh mark where smartphone batteries are concerned? This would make smartphone batteries step into tablet territory then. Would you prefer to carry around a charger to juice up your exhausted smartphone at least twice a day for slimmer smartphone, or do you not mind the extra weight and millimeters for a full day of juice?
