Panasonic AG-AF105A pro camcorder lets you output 10-bit HD video

It is not everyday that we chance upon a pro camcorder, but today is one of those days, and it will be Panasonic who steps up to the plate this time around with an updated version of the AG-AF105 model. We are referring to the Panasonic AG-AF105A pro camcorder, where it will enable you to output 10-bit HD video via the live view SDI port to an external recorder, which in turn will boost the color range to a billion hues as well as 1024 shades of grey. Apart from that, it ought to solve one of the main problems concerning the previous 8-bit camcorder which by the way, does not come cheap at all.

We’re talking about $10,000 here, The updated model will also offer a new PS recording mode with 25Mbps data rate, full HD progressive modes (1080/60p, 1080/50p), higher fidelity 16 bit LPCM audio and enlarged focus assist. It will arrive on shelves this coming November 15th in the Land of the Rising Sun, so folks who live outside of Japan might have to import one if they want one, as there has been no mention of an international date until now. Perhaps you know a friend or two who lives in Japan and would want to act as an intermediary on your behalf?

Panasonic launches AGAF105A tweaked pro camcorder with 10bit video output

Panasonic has just launched the AG-AF105A pro camcorder, an updated version of the AG-AF105 model, and for lovers of fine color gamut, there’s good news. You can now output 10-bit HD video through the live view SDI port to an external recorder, boosting the color range to a billion hues and 1024 shades of grey. That addresses one of the main gripes with the previous $6k, 8-bit camcorder: it had to live in a world of Red Scarlets and Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera MFTs, which already have deep color. The revised model also brings a new PS recording mode with 25Mbps data rate, full HD progressive modes (1080/60p, 1080/50p), higher fidelity 16 bit LPCM audio and enlarged focus assist. It’ll hit shelves on November 15th in Japan (there’s no mention of an international date yet) with pricing up to the dealer, so sharpen up those haggling skills if you want one.

Panasonic Eluga gets updated to Android 4.0 ICS

While Panasonic might be pulling out of the European market a year after they announced their interest in it, they have not forgotten about their European customers and those who might have given their Android handset, the Eluga, a chance. Originally launched with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, it looks like Eluga owners can expect their devices to begin receiving the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. Granted it’s not Android 4.1 Jelly Bean that we’re sure many were looking forward to, but it’s still better than nothing, right? Oddly enough instead of providing an OTA update, Panasonic has instead opted to put the download in the Google Play store, which means that you will need to navigate on over to download the update. You will need 150MB of SD card space and be running the latest Gingerbread ROM. It’s a little messy and unnecessarily complicated but like we said, better than nothing. Instructions on how to proceed can be found on Panasonic’s website.

Panasonic to halt sales of smartphones in Europe in 2013

Back in 2011, Panasonic announced their plans to launch smartphones outside of Japan. For those wondering, for the most part Japanese brands like Sharp, Fujitsu and Panasonic have typically sold their smartphones within the Japanese market, although once in a blue moon we do see those devices pop up in international markets. Unfortunately it looks like despite Panasonic’s plans to start making a splash globally with their own brand of smartphones, the company has announced that they will be halting the sale of their smartphones in Europe.

The sale of their smartphones is expected to conclude for the European market come March 2013, but they did state that they will continue the sale of smartphones back in their home country of Japan. For those who missed out at MWC 2012 earlier this year, Panasonic announced the Eluga Android smartphone designed for the European market, but apparently despite its features, it was not enough to set themselves apart from the growing competition. It is kind of a pity considering that in Japan, those brands have come up with some pretty unique and innovative mobile devices.

Panasonic shows $613 million operating profit for Q2, but lowers full year projections

The good news for Panasonic in its Q2 earnings release is that it managed to record a 48.8 billion yen ($613 million) operating profit, higher than last year. The bad news however is word of falling sales in its TV business, although we’re not hearing any confirmation of changes in its plans for mobile phones. New CEO Kazuhiro Tsuga is working a new restructuring plan that should help return divisions like its one for TV to profitability, but there will be costs upfront. The company revised its operating profit prediction for the year to 140 billion yen ($1.76 billion) based on the slower sales, and still is looking at a net loss for the year of 765 billion yen ($9.6 billion) due to deferred tax assets. Hopefully any cost-cutting doesn’t affect the quality of its Viera HDTV brand, but Panasonic will have to figure out some way to turn those stellar reviews into overall profits, even as the market continues to shrink. Our suggestion? Get some of those 8K Super Hi-Vision plasmas to market, ASAP.

Nikkei, Reuters claim Panasonic may quit European cellphones after its second bruising

Panasonic Eluga underwater

Once bitten, twice shy. Panasonic backed out of the European cellphone market in 2005 and gave it a second chance with its Eluga smartphone this spring, but both Nikkei and Reuters hear that the company is already considering its second withdrawal. A tough economy and a presently successful cost-cutting initiative (not to mention an uninspiring product, if we’re honest) could have Panasonic exiting Europe before its fiscal year winds down at the end of March. Of the two as yet unconfirmed sources, Nikkei is going even further — it believes that Panasonic is considering either a partnership to justify its Japanese business or else waving goodbye to cellphones altogether. Nothing’s certain until Panasonic says so. If there’s any truth to the story, though, we could see one more casualty in a rapidly thinning smartphone market.

Panasonic announces Toughbook CF-C2 with Windows 8

Rugged laptops aren’t too common in the everyday consumer world, but they can easily be found out on construction sites and even on the battle field for military use. Panasonic unveiled the “semi-rugged” Toughbook CF-C2 convertible tablet PC earlier today, and it’s built for those who need a little bit of added protection when out in the field.

The Toughbook CF-C2 is the company’s latest 12.5-inch convertible notebook, and it comes with Windows 8 Pro out of the box. Inside there’s a 1.8GHz Intel Core i5-3427U vPro processor, 4GB of RAM (expandable to 8GB), and a 500GB hard drive (as well as 128GB and 256GB SSD options). On the outside you’ll find a pair of USB 3.0 ports, as well as an LCD IPS display with a 720p webcam at the top.

The display offers five-point multitouch and a digitizer for stylus use. Connectivity options include 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and your choice of either 4G LTE or Gobi global 3G, but we can’t imagine anyone picking 3G over LTE, but unless of course LTE isn’t available in your area, in which case 3G is sadly your only option.

The Toughbook CF-C2 can withstand up to a 30-inch drop (approximately right below waist height), and can take up to six ounces of a beverage being spilled over its magnesium alloy body. The convertible tablet/laptop will start shipping in December, with the base model setting you back a steep $2,949.

Panasonic introduces new Toughbook C2 convertible tablet with Windows 8 Pro for $2,949

The Wire’s Lester Freamon was never too far away from his Panasonic Toughbook, and we’d bet he’d be able to handle plenty more wiretaps with one of these. This is the Toughbook C2, the company’s latest 12.5-inch convertible notebook for Windows 8 Pro that’s designed for healthcare professionals and daring explorer types. On the hardware side, there’s an Intel Core i5-3427U vPro CPU, 11 hours of battery life and a pair of USB 3.0 ports. You’ll be staring into a 500 nit, LCD IPS display (and a 720p webcam) that offers five-point multitouch and a digitizer so you can scrawl down your notes with a stylus. Connectivity options include 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth and a choice of either LTE or Gobi global 3G. As you might have guessed from the name, it’ll withstand a 30-inch drop and can take up to six ounces of freshly-brewed coffee being spilled over its magnesium alloy body. The Toughbook C2 starts shipping from December, with the base model setting you, and the Baltimore PD, back $2,949 with a three-year warranty.
