World’s Thinnest Graphite Heat Shield Stops Your Smartphone From Melting Your Hand [Guts]

The dual and quad core processors used in modern smartphones make the devices extremely capable, but also run extremely hot. So to wrangle all that excess heat without adding too much bulk, Panasonic has managed to shrink its graphite heat shields to a mere 10μm (microns) thick. (Size comparison: A human red blood cell is 5μm across.) At one-one-hundred-thousandth of a meter, this shield is the world’s thinnest. More »

Alleged Panasonic GH3 specs leaked

If you’ve enjoyed Panasonic’s previous two mirrorless camera systems, the GH1 and GH2 (pictured above), you’re probably curious as to what the company might have to offer as far as the GH3 is concerned. While these are hardly the official specs, the folks at 43Rumors have allegedly managed to get their hands on the specs of the upcoming GH3 via a “trusted” source.

Like we said, these are not the official specs since it has not be announced yet, but there is the chance that they could be real. In any case we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now, but you can check out the full spec list after the break and let us know how plausible these specs are! (more…)

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 4, 2012

We’re getting ready to end a Tuesday that has produced some rather big news, so let’s jump right into it, shall we? By far the biggest story of the day had to do with upcoming the Apple event. Apple started sending out invitations for the event today, using a picture that gives away what to expect at the event (spoiler alert: the iPhone 5 is coming). With an iPhone 5 reveal essentially confirmed, analysts are predicting success for the new handset, saying that it could potentially sell 10 million units this quarter. Not bad, provided the device actually hits those marks.

Speaking of the iPhone 5, Apple has prepared itself for the lawsuit Samsung promised should the iPhone maker release device with LTE functionality. iPhone 5 nano SIM cards were also spotted today, leading us to believe that the next iPhone will be launching shortly after it’s revealed. Apple isn’t the only one with an event incoming though, as HTC also started sending out invitations for a September 19 event of its own today. The Galaxy S III has knocked the iPhone 4S out of the top US sales spot, and we enjoyed a rather colorful Nokia Lumia 920 leak today.

After seeing it pop up a few times, Verizon announced the Samsung Galaxy Stellar today alongside the new LG Intuition, and Nokia has teased that some of its Windows Phone 8 Lumias might come complete with wireless charging. The FBI fell victim to a massive AntiSec hack today, and after the FBI agent targeted in the attack called for hackers to help the FBI fend off these kinds of breaches, the FBI called out AntiSec and said it wasn’t involved in any such attack. The Panasonic Toughbook 19 has been reintroduced with new third-generation Intel Ivy Bridge processors, and we caught a glimpse of the Nokia N9, which will sadly never see the light of day.

JXD has a very familiar-looking Android gaming device on offer, and today the Angry Birds spin-off Bad Piggies was given a release date. The Pantech Flex is heading straight for AT&T with a budget price tag, and Syabas has announced the next iteration of its popular Popcorn Hour media player. Bethesda released Hearthfire on the Xbox 360 earlier today, a spec list for the (hopefully) upcoming Panasonic GH3 was leaked, and Huawei has finally given the Ascend D1 – its new flagship device – a release date. Finally tonight, Square Enix has a new Final Fantasy collection for die-hard fans, but you better be ready to hand over a stack of cash if you want to get your hands on it.

That does it for the SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up for this Tuesday. Now, go out and enjoy the rest of your evening!

Panasonic GH3 specs leak ahead of Photokina

Panasonic‘s new GH3 is expected to be at Photokina later this month, but ahead of its appearance there, it seems that a spec list for the camera has leaked. The leaked list comes courtesy of 43Rumors, which has given us details on the Panasonic GH3 quite a few times in the past. 43Rumors claims that these specifications come from a trusted source, so the list we have posted after the jump might just be the line up of hardware and features the GH3 will launch with.

Still, it’s always best to take things like this with a grain of salt, regardless of how trustworthy the sources may be. A leaked list like this is hardly confirmation from Panasonic, but we do have to say that if it’s accurate, then the GH3 will be launching with some sexy specs. The rumors have said that this is a camera worth checking out after it launches, and apparently Panasonic wants the GH3 to hold its own against other high-end DSLR APS-C cameras.

In order to do that, it’s going to have to be packing some really solid features and hardware, and with that goal, Panasonic has its work cut out for it. Take a look at the full list of leaked specs:

• 16 Megapixel “Wide dynamic range” CMOS Sensor
• New Venus 7 engine
• Electronic shutter
• ISO 100-12.800
• 6fps
• Fastest AF of any interchangeable lens system camera
• Video Bitrate 50Mbps (72Mbps ALL-I)
• 30p/25p in MP4, MOV and AVCHD
• 3.5 Mic in
• Built-in stereo mic
• Audio out
• PC control
• Time Code
• 1740k OLED LVF, Touch Monitor OLED 610k.
• External battery grip
• Wifi with remote control through iOS and Android Applications
• External XLR accessory
• Focus Peaking
• Interval shooting and slow motion. Slow Movie extension (40%, 50%, 80%) Fast 160 / 200 / 300%
• Magnesium alloy body. Body is bigger than the Panasonic GH2.

The price of the GH3 is still unknown, but don’t expect it be cheap while sporting those specs. An interesting thing to note is that 43Rumors says this spec list has a “81-99% chance” of being correct, so take that how you will. As stated above, Panasonic is expected the have the GH3 at Photokina (which kicks off on September 18), so we may not have much longer to wait until we find out if this spec list is legitimate.

Panasonic Toughbook 19 has nine lives, goes through another round of upgrades

I am starting to believe that the Panasonic Toughbook 19 is one notebook name that is set to last, considering how in 2010 the device with the very same name was updated with an Intel Core i5 processor, and in June last year, the Toughbook 19 received another round of upgrades such as doubling the RAM amount amongst others. Fast forward to today, and this convertible tablet PC has been given yet another shot in the arm, where a faster processor and expanded storage deliver quite the charming mix to increase productivity for mobile workers in extreme environments. We are talking about the latest generation Intel Core i5-3320M vPro processor (up to 3.3GHz) with Intel Turbo Boost Technology seeing action, in addition to a 500GB 7200rpm hard drive (shock-mounted flex-connect with quick release), 10% longer battery life, USB 3.0 connectivity, better touchpad responsiveness via Interlink’s VersaPad, an ambient light sensor that paves the way for an automatic backlight shut-off to enhance battery life, as well as an improved battery calibration tool.

You will find the optional integrated 4G LTE wireless or 3G Gobi mobile broadband to be yet another key feature that has found its way into the Panasonic Toughbook 19, letting you remain connected (in theory) at all times. Depending on the hardware configuration, the Panasonic Toughbook 19 will still not come cheap, with prices starting from $3,549 upwards – although that will be accompanied by a three-year limited warranty, inclusive of parts and labor.

Wheelchair Morphs Into Bed, Claims Title of Ultimate Work-From-Home Accessory [Video]

Transferring patients with limited mobility from a wheelchair to a bed could soon be an easier feat if Panasonic perfects this electric care bed it’s been developing. It transforms from a wheelchair to a hospital bed so that patients don’t ever have to actually be moved from one to the other. It’s also an amazing accessory for telecommuters, and finally puts mankind on the road to the future predicted in Pixar’s Wall-E. More »

Panasonic’s 103-inch glasses-less 3D plasma panel arrives at IFA (eyes-on)

While it might not be as huge as the Super Hi Vision panel lingering in the same darkened theater, Panasonic’s new 103-inch demonstration display has the ability to offer up a 3D view to five different viewers — as long as they’re in the right visual sweet spot. The effect is subtle, natural, although colors felt little bit muted compared to the 145-inch prototype, with the demo videos drawing us in to its demo reel, rather than pushing out an image. The plasma display panel prototype is also glasses-free, with the 4K2K screen able to push out enough pixels to offer these multiple viewing angles. Again, there’s no substitute for being there yourself.

Panasonic's 145inch 8K PDP eyeson

Tucked away into a dark corner of Panasonic’s booth is the clear highlight of the outfit’s IFA 2012 showcase: a 145-inch 8K plasma display panel. Developed in partnership with Japan’s NHK, the prototype is merely a proof of concept for the broadcaster’s planned 2020 launch of Super Hi Vision TV. In person, the flat screen is truly awe-inspiring, offering such richness of detail that even up-close we weren’t able to discern any pixels, while colors appeared balanced and natural. Overall, the image quality — 16 times that of regular full HD — nearly apes the real-world images it replicates. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait sometime before this tech trickles down to the mass market level. In the meantime, content yourself with a brief video demo after the break.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5 digital camera

Panasonic’s foray into the mirrorless digital camera realm continues with the Lumix DMC-G5, where you will find this mirrorless shooter sporting a viewfinder that has been integrated into a rather small and light body, and this particular camera is tipped to be released this coming September 13th in Japan. Sporting a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5 does seem to be shaping up to be a pretty decent Micro Four Thirds offering – on paper, at least.

Other hardware specifications include full HD movie recording capability, a Touch Pad AF for easy focusing so that you can concentrate more on framing the shot, an “eye sensor AF” feature, an SDXC memory card slot, a 3″ LCD monitor at the back and of course, the ability for you to hook this puppy up to other Micro Four Thirds lenses in your collection that will increase your chances of capturing some really stunning shots. Any takers for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5? No idea on its international pricing though. [Press Release]
