Pantech Vega IM-A860 Joins Full HD Smartphone Party

The Full HD smartphone is no longer the stuff of legends – in fact, sooner or later, you would find smartphones that have a Full HD resolution display being the norm, while anything less than that would be deemed to be low-end. Of course, at this point in time, all Full HD display smartphones on the Android platform do seem to be their respective flagship models of different smartphone manufacturers, and the Pantech Vega IM-A860 is no different, coming in the Vega IM-A860S and IM-A860L flavors. Chances are these will be codenames for SK Telecom and LG U+, which are a pair out of the trio of major carriers in South Korea.

So far, the Pantech Vega IM-A860 has been seen in GLBenchmark’s database, and in the process received Wi-Fi certification, so chances are pretty high (with expectations running so) that a formal launch is right on track. Still, perhaps it is too optimistic to expect a Full HD Pantech Vega to make its way to the market before 2012 is over, so a CES announcement does seem to be the more reasonable conclusion.

Pantech Magnus P9090 Leaked

The folks at @evleaks have done it yet again, where they have tweeted a new press rendering of what could very well be the Pantech Magnus P9090, which is touted for AT&T, one of the big four mobile carriers in the US. The Pantech Magnus P9090 might sound familiar to you, and this should not come across as any surprise since this is not the first time that it was revealed to the masses. Back in August, a leak of the Pantech Magnus P9090 already made its rounds around the Internet, where it was also whispered to come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich right out of the box. I guess @evleaks’ latest efforts do seem to point towards Ice Cream Sandwich as the default operating system, although there is still some hope for it to come with the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in due time.

Sporting a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 processor, the rear end of the cover comes with a tiny bump that does seem to remind us of the HTC Droid Incredible range that Verizon Wireless offers. No idea on when the Pantech Magnus P9090 will finally hit the market, and for how much, but at the very least we have an idea of what it looks like.

AT&T Pantech Magnus (P9090) reappears after fall vacation

AT&T Pantech Magnus P9090 reappears after summer break

A blast from the recent past, Pantech’s Magnus has leaked again — this time with the screen switched on. We’ve already gleaned that a 8-megapixel, quad-band LTE, MSM8960 dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor and NFC are all part of the AT&T-bound package, while those onscreen buttons suggest Android 4.0 — at the least. While the Twitter-based evleaks decided to obscure the calendar widget (and the probable launch date), we doubt it’ll much longer before AT&T offers a full explanation.

Pantech secures next-generation Android devices with Mocana

Pantech has announced that it will be securing its next-generation Android smartphones and tablets using software from a security firm called Mocana. Mocana’s VeloDAR solution will be used to integrate FIPS 140-2 certified encryption capability into new Pantech devices. The VeloDAR software protects data at rest on the internal memory of the Pantech smartphone.

The security software also protects any data stored on SD cards that are used in the device. VeloDAR uses Mocana’s government-certified FIPS 140-2 Level 1 cryptographic module called NanoCrypto. VeloDAR was specifically designed for Android device manufacturers to enable encryption capabilities beyond what is natively available in Android.

The software provides high-performance, efficient encryption, and promises virtually zero performance penalty. VeloDAR is a key component of the Mocana Security Detail for Android, which is a comprehensive suite of security software, services, and expertise that allows OEMs to build secure Android devices. The idea is that Android manufacturers can focus on hardware design with Mocana handling security.

Other components of the Security Detail for Android suite include the Mocana VeloVPN Client, which promises to be the most complete IPSec VPN Client for Android device manufacturers in the industry. One of the first Pantech devices to get the Mocana software will be the Flex. The Flex will have 4.3-inch HD Super AMOLED and a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor along with the eight-megapixel rear camera.

Pantech Flex review

Pantech Flex review

Pantech is known for producing budget Android smartphones that punch above their weight, and the Flex is no exception. Available now on AT&T for $50 with a two-year contract, it delivers a dual-core Snapdragon S4 — the same chip that lurks within mightier phones such as the Galaxy S III and One X — along with a qHD display and LTE connectivity. The phone certainly hits a number of the check boxes for value seekers, but there’s something that makes the Flex very different from other smartphones on the market: it has a dual personality.

Folks, prepare for memories of At Ease, Microsoft Bob and Packard Bell Navigator to come rushing back. The Pantech Flex features a unique launcher known as Easy Experience, which caters to those who might find Ice Cream Sandwich overwhelming. Fortunately, there’s also a standard launcher for experts. In that regard, the Flex is deserving of its name. Unlike most handsets on the market, it’s targeting both broke college students and technophobes just the same. Of course, we’re here to answer a greater question: is the Pantech Flex worthy of being your next smartphone? Join us after the break for the answer.

Samsung, LG and Pantech reportedly gearing up to release 1080p Full HD smartphones in 2013

There aren’t too many mobile devices out there that can boast a full 1080p HD display, save for the HTC J Butterfly, HTC’s take on the phablet. Well unsurprisingly it seems that other manufacturers for Android have plans to catchup and according to MK News, it looks like Samsung, LG and Pantech have plans to launch 1080p smartphones come 2013. According to the report, these high-end smartphones are expected to be introduced before the second half of next year, and if the report is accurate, we guess it wouldn’t be completely unreasonable of us to expect that the Samsung Galaxy S4 could sport such a display. Either way with LG’s flagship, the Optimus G being launched not too long ago, we have to wonder what sort of device LG might have up their sleeves. Either way we’ll keep our eyes peeled, but are you guys looking forward to 1080p Full HD displays next year, or do you think the current-gen of displays are good enough and going 1080p Full HD is just another marketing gimmick that manufacturers will use to advertise their phones?

Pantech announces Android 4.0 update for Burst and Element smartphones

Pantech has announced that it is rolling out an operating system update for two of its Android smartphones. The two smartphones are the Pantech Burst and the Element. Both smartphones are being upgraded to Android 4.0 ICS on the AT&T network.

Pantech says that the operating system updates enhance the performance and usability features on each of devices with a focus on custom tools and refining the user interface. The Burst is a 4G LTE smartphone with a four-inch super AMOLED screen using a 1.5 GHz dual core processor. This device is one of the cheaper smartphones that AT&T offers selling for $.99 with a new two-year agreement.

Some of the features the operating system upgrade adds to this device include an updated lock screen, a new recent apps button, and enhanced home screen with a canvas switcher edit function, and improved text input and spell checking. The update also enhances the camera with a new self-mode and a new panoramic capture mode.

The Element is an AT&T exclusive that is waterproof and sells for $399.99. The device supports 4G LTE connectivity, and the Android 4.0 update adds a number of settings and features to this device. The update brings the ability to customize the number of home screens with up to five. The update also allows the ability to combine and organize app shortcuts in the folders and a redesigned settings menu. The update for either smartphone requires the device be tethered to a computer.

AT&T Pantech Burst and Pantech Element receives Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update

If you happen to own either the Pantech Burst or the Pantech Element tablet from AT&T and are an avid fan of operating system updates, then I think it would be safe to assume that you already know the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system update has been made available to both devices already. Needless to say, all the standard issue Ice Cream Sandwich features will accompany both the Pantech Burst and Pantech Element when you perform the upgrade, ranging from a new lockscreen to other essentials such as a new browser and a Setup Wizard. Not only that, the Pantech Burst itself will also be on the receiving end of native synchronization for the AT&T Address Book alongside getting expanded camera options like the Self-Mode and Panorama Capture.

There is one caveat however – the Ice Cream Sandwich update will not come over-the-air but will require you to manually perform the update via its website. Meaning, you will need a computer so that you can download the relevant files. Of course, it pays to have an eye for detail, since detailed installation instructions can be found in the respective webpages as well.

Pantech Vega R3 announced, possible Samsung Galaxy Note 2 competitor

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Note at IFA last year, we’re sure that many thought that this would just be a trend, or a novelty. After all, who would want something that’s half smartphone half tablet, right? Well Samsung’s competitors certainly do not think that this is a novelty as companies such as LG (and possibly HTC) have since released devices to compete with the Galaxy Note and its successor, the Galaxy Note 2. Well it looks like another Korean company is here to add more variety to the mix and it is none other than Pantech with the Vega R3.

Featuring a 5.3” HD display, the Vega R3 will be powered by Qualcomm’s quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 processor, the same found in LG’s upcoming Optimus G, a whopping 13MP rear-facing camera, a 2MP front-facing camera, NFC, 4G LTE, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, a 2,600mAh battery and will run on Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. We have to admit we are slightly disappointed with the last bit as we expected Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to be the icing on the cake, but we don’t see why the Vega R3 will not be updated in due time. No word on when the Pantech Vega R3 will be released in other countries, but in the meantime the phone is set for a release on major South Korean carriers.
