Pantech Flex 4G LTE handset teased for AT&T

If you were planning on attending the Pantech Beach Championships this weekend in Ocean City, MD, you might be able to catch a glimpse of an upcoming handset by the manufacturer. Dubbed the Pantech Flex, not much information has been given out by the manufacturer except to say that it will be a 4G LTE capable device and will be making its way onto AT&T’s network in the coming months. Apart from that, photos and additional specifications remain unknown at this point, although we guess it would be a safe assumption to think that it will at the very least be powered by Android, but it remains to be seen if it will prove to be a high-end phone capable of holding its own against devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3, or a low-mid ranged handset that will come with an affordable price tag. In any case the details should be provided this weekend at the Beach Championships event, so we guess we will learn more then. Smartphone users who have enjoyed Pantech’s previous offerings in the past, be sure to check back with us as we keep you updated with the details!

FCC Fridays August 10, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we’ve gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!

Pantech P9090 Magnus swings by FCC with AT&T LTE

Pantech P9090 Magnus swings by FCC with AT&T LTE

Despite cranking out plenty of high-end devices in Asia, Pantech has built itself a reputation in the US as a budget OEM — but continues to improve its products regardless. Having already proven its ability to crank out LTE phones on the cheap with the Burst, it appears ready to follow up with another phone on AT&T’s next-gen network, as evidenced by documents released by the FCC this afternoon. This particular handset, dubbed the Magnus on its WiFi certification paperwork, sports quad-band LTE (700 / 850 / 1700 / 1900), a radio combo that’s starting to be quite the trend for AT&T-bound phones recently — likely done to ensure the GSM carrier’s refarming efforts go as smoothly as possible. The federal docs also reveal the presence of NFC (suggesting this will come with Android 4.x included), and Bluetooth certification tells us we can also expect it to offer the 4.0 standard. The paperwork is fuzzy on more details, but we hope its arrival is just around the corner.

Editorial: HTC’s departure from South Korea proves a tough fight for foreign brands

Editorial HTC's departure from South Korea proves a tough fight for foreign brands

HTC’s closure of its South Korean office may seem yet another blow to the company this year, but don’t be alarmed: we saw it coming. It’s a given that Peter Chou’s gang is cutting back in response to its recent weak performance, but the more interesting takeaway here is the fact that the South Korean smartphone market is one tough nut for foreign brands to crack open. Just walk into any carrier shop in Seoul and you’ll see the shelves dominated by devices from Samsung, LG and Pantech. If you’re lucky, you may spot the odd Sony, Motorola and HTC phones cowering in a corner. So why is that the case? Let’s take a look at the how it all started.

Pantech MARAUDER heads to Verizon with 4G LTE on the cheap

Making that jump from an old-fashioned feature phone to a smartphone can be pretty intimidating for a lot of consumers, and Verizon and Pantech are looking to do something about that with the new MARAUDER. Not only is the MARAUDER inexpensive, but it also comes with a number of features that will help newbies ease into the world of smartphones. Of course, those who don’t need an introduction on using a smartphone will also be covered, and even better is the fact that the MARAUDER won’t break the bank.

Verizon and Pantech’s announcement mostly talks about the MARAUDER’s Starter and Standard modes. By switching the phone to Starter mode, users will be getting a more “intuitive” setup that includes four home screens, preset widgets, and a quick-dialer that allows for making calls directly from the home screen. In other words, it’s meant to give new users an introduction to smartphones that won’t overwhelm. Standard mode unlocks the full Android experience for users who already know what they’re doing, unleashing the full set of seven customizable home screens. Users will be able to switch between both modes freely without losing any saved settings, so if you jump into Standard mode a bit too early, you’ll be able to return to Starter mode with everything still in place.

On the technical side of things, the MARAUDER comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 4-inch screen, a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, Bluetooth 3.0 and mobile hotspot capabilities, a 5-megapixel camera, a microSD slot, and is 4G LTE ready. It also comes equipped with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, which is getting on in days. The specs will leave something to be desired for smartphone aficionados, but the MARAUDER wasn’t exactly made with them in mind anyway. Overall, this sounds like it’ll be a decent phone for getting your feet wet, but we wouldn’t be surprised to hear that consumers are moving on from the MARAUDER after they’ve had their first taste of the “smartphone experience.”

The MARAUDER will be available at Verizon starting August 2 (that’s this Thursday), and will cost $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. Even with the mail-in rebate, you’ll still need to sign a two-year contract to get the MARAUDER for that price, so keep that in mind. Finally, Verizon also says that those who purchase the MARAUDER will be required to sign up for its Share Everything plan.

Pantech Marauder officially announced for Verizon

Pantech MarauderWe’ve heard rumors about the Pantech Marauder arriving on Verizon before and it looks like we finally have official confirmation about the device. Verizon today announced the launch of the Pantech Marauder on its network. The Android device will be a 4G LTE device that packs a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a 3.8” WVGA display, 5-megapixel rear camera, microSD card slot (up to 32GB) and a slide out QWERTY keyboard for folks who are constantly messaging on their phones.

The Pantech Marauder will also feature a special “Starter Mode” that will simplify the Android user experience for folks new to the smartphone world. Once users get more comfortable they can easily switch the phone to “Standard Mode” and use regular Android. The phone will go on sale August 2nd for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and with a 2-year contract with Verizon. Any takers?

Pantech Marauder QWERTY slider gets official for Verizon, runs $50 after rebate

We just saw some evidence a few days ago a new QWERTY slider from Pantech would soon be hitting Verizon, and it turns out that was indeed the case. The carrier has now officially announced the Pantech Marauder, an LTE-equipped device that will set you back just $50 after a $50 mail-in rebate (on a two-year contract) when it becomes available on August 2nd. Not surprisingly, that won’t exactly buy you the highest-end phone around — you’ll get a 3.8-inch WVGA screen, a 5-megapixel camera, an unspecified 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, mobile hotspot functionality, and Android 4.0. Somewhat notably, the phone also offers you a choice of Standard and Starter modes, the former of which is apparently stock Android (or something close to it) while the latter provides a simplified UI aimed at new smartphone users. Assuming they aren’t scared off by a name like “Marauder,” that is.

Pantech Renue arrives on AT&T

I suppose when it comes to smartphones, there are two classes of users – one who loves the full touchscreen display and the kind of freedom that it comes with, while another class would want something more proper – that is, a full physical QWERTY keyboard so that you can have that comforting tactile feedback that your fingers are so used to after all these years of using an old school phone. Well, we are glad to say that the Pantech Renue from AT&T delivers something from both worlds, although I would not be bold enough to venture that it is the best of both worlds considering the relatively small 3.2″ capacitive touchscreen display.

Well, one thing is for sure – if you happen to have a soft spot for the environment, then you certainly will not be able to go wrong with the Pantech Renue from AT&T. After all, it was constructed with 67% of its components being recyclable, and despite its green accreditation, that does not mean it is some sort of pansy device. No sir, it was constructed to withstand everyday wear and tear.

Just how much does one need to fork out for the Pantech Renue? We are looking at a highly affordable $69.99 with a new 2-year contract after a mail-in rebate. As for the rest of its environmental friendly accreditation, you would be pleased to hear that the packaging of the Pantech Renue itself is made out of 95% recycled paper and non-POV soy ink. Not only that, it is UL Environment certified and complies with RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) standards to reduce exposure to hazardous materials and harmful toxins including Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+), Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE).

AS for the ahrdware specifications, there is the aforementioned full QWERTY keyboard that slides open whenever you need to send out a text message in a jiffy with adequate tactile feedback, having the Qualcomm Brew Mobile Platform run on it, a 3-megapixel camera that is able to capture video as well whenever the need arises, in addition to one-touch access to social media, messaging, music, pictures and games.

Pantech Renue arrives at AT&T

AT&T has a spanking new smartphone for the masses, especially those with a heart for the environment. We are talking about the Pantech Renue, which is made out of 67% recyclable components, now how about that? It will not just decompose by itself if you leave it in the box though, far from it. The Pantech Renue was specially designed to be able to withstand everyday wear and tear, and the best thing about this smartphone would be the relatively cheap price of just $69.99 a pop – albeit with a new 2-year contract and after a mail-in rebate, of course.

The Pantech Renue is first and foremost, a messaging smartphone thanks to the integrated physical QWERTY keyboard, while managing to maintain a compact design. The packaging itself is made from 95% recycled paper and printed using non-POV soy ink. Other hardware specifications include a 3.2” capacitive touchscreen display, the Qualcomm Brew Mobile Platform, a 3-megapixel camera with video recording capability, as well as one-touch access to social media, messaging, music, pictures and games. AT&T’s Eco-rating makes in-store debut alongside Pantech Renue

AT&T's Eco-rating makes in-store debut alongside Pantech Renue

In February, at Mobile World Congress, AT&T announced a new program that would rate its various devices on their environmental-friendliness. Now that system is finally getting its in-store debut alongside the impressively green Pantech Renue. The Eco-ratings, which grade devices based on their use of recycled materials and toxic metals such as mercury and lead will give those more concerned with protecting the Earth than having the latest and greatest tech an easy way to determine the device that’s right for them. Pantech for its part hopes the Renue, with its 67-percent recycled components and Energy Star-compliant charger will draw at least a few interested parties who wander in to AT&Ts shops. The rugged messaging device doesn’t rock Jelly Bean, or any other smartphone OS for that matter, but it does have a slide out QWERTY keyboard for SMS addicts. Check out the video and PR after the break for more details.
