Pantech Star Q leaks for Verizon, rocks 4G LTE and dual-core S4

New pictures have just leaked of Pantech’s second 4G LTE device for Verizon Wireless. What you’re looking at below is their new Pantech Star Q, complete with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and decent mid-range specs. The new budget offering hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the folks from AndroidandMe received the picture below confirming its existence.

What you’ll get from the Pantech Star Q is an overall decent mid-range smartphone. It runs on Verizon 4G LTE, and packs the same 1.5 GHz dual-core S4 processor as the Galaxy S III, but that is where the good news ends. Most likely it will be a free device, or around the $49 mark — otherwise I doubt many will be buying it.

It rocks a 4-inch display, 3 megapixel camera on the rear and Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Sadly for some reason Pantech’s UI changes to Ice Cream Sandwich makes this phone look like something from 2009. The low WVGA resolution screen and measly 3 megapixel camera (without flash) will keep this phone on the low end of the price spectrum, that is for sure. It has a 5 row hardware QWERTY keyboard for fans of those, and will most likely be a very budget friendly phone. Now all we need is a price, release date, and official announcement. We’ll update when we hear anything more.

Pantech Marauder rumored to arrive on Verizon, carries Ice Cream Sandwich and LTE connectivity

Verizon Wireless logoEarlier in the day, we talked about the Pantech Star Q, and while there are some disputes going around claiming that the Pantech Star Q is really the Pantech Marauder, I think that both handsets are different beasts. After all, the Marauder was touted to come with a 5-megapixel camera, while the Star Q has a 3-megapixel shooter at the back, so no prizes for guessing just which smartphone will come with the more capable camera. Both were said to feature a physical QWERTY keyboard, but I guess smartphones that come in such a form factor will get fewer and fewer in between, especially when you consider how the full touchscreen user interface is going to gobble up the way we use smartphones.

We also know that the Pantech Marauder will come with LTE connectivity, in addition to having it run on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Sure, it is no Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but at the very least you know that Ice Cream Sandwich has its fair share of features and functions to keep you happy. There is no word on pricing as at press time although it does seem headed for Verizon, but we do hope to keep our keen senses peeled just in case we pick anything from the radar.

Pantech Star Q for Verizon surfaces, offers LTE and Snapdragon S4

This one still isn’t completely official just yet, but Android and Me has managed to obtain some pictures and fairly complete details for the Pantech Star Q headed for Verizon — a device that was first spotted in FCC filings back in April. As you can see, it’s a QWERTY slider, and it’s said to pack Android 4.0.4, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, front and rear-facing cameras (just 3-megapixels ’round back, though), LTE connectivity, and a 4-inch WVGA display. About the only key details missing are a price and release date, but Android and Me surmises it’ll run $99 on-contract with a launch any time now — both of which seem like safe guesses.

Pantech Star Q with QWERTY keyboard leaked, appears to be headed Verizon’s way

There are no doubt users out there who prefer the tactile feedback and familiarity of physical keyboards on their phones, but at the same time want smartphone functionality as well. If you think you fall into that category, photos of the Pantech Star Q have emerged and appears to be headed Verizon’s way as the successor to the Pantech Breakout. The phone is expected to sport a 4” display and a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 process under its hood with 4G LTE capabilities, Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich and a rather disappointing 3MP rear-facing camera. Apart from its rather impressive processor, the rest of the specs do leave a bit to be desired, but then again, assuming the leaked info is accurate, it will only cost $99 on contract which we have to say is pretty decent for a 4G LTE phone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 on board. No word on when it will be launched, but be sure to stay tuned as we keep our eyes and ears peeled for an official announcement, which hopefully won’t be too far off.

Engadget’s smartphone buyer’s guide: summer 2012 edition

Engadget's smartphone buyer's guide summer 2012 edition

Despite the sweltering heat waves, our spirits are high at Engadget, and for good reason: it’s time for our summer edition of the smartphone buyer’s guide. Here, you’ll find our top recommendations for the best smartphones across several US carriers, along with the best QWERTY and budget alternatives. In many ways, it’s now easier than ever to find a world-class smartphone, but unless you’ve developed a strong brand preference, choosing one is likely more difficult than ever before. It’s no secret that the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III have firmly cemented themselves as the premier smartphones of the day, but if you’re torn between the two, we’ll reveal our preference in this latest installment.

Summertime also brought a bit of a shock, as Microsoft revealed that Windows Phone 8 apps won’t be compatible with the current generation of Windows Phone hardware. For this reason, we’ve excluded all Windows Phone handsets from consideration in the latest buyer’s guide. While the future of Microsoft’s mobile platform looks incredibly bright, a purchase now would guarantee obsolescence in the short-term. Instead, all prospective Windows Phone purchasers must wait for the next generation of handsets to become available — you’ll regret it otherwise.

Naturally, there is no shortage of rumors surrounding the next Apple iPhone, and given the handset’s current lack of LTE connectivity, the iPhone 4S is certainly showing its age. While cautious purchasers may choose to bide their time, the iPhone remains top-notch in many other respects, and its arrival at a number of prepaid carriers brought a breath of fresh air to an otherwise stagnant environment.

If you’re curious to see how it all unfolded — and we know you are — join us after the break, where we round up the very best smartphones of the season.

Pantech Vega S5 announced

Pantech Vega S5While there aren’t too many “large” phones like the Samsung Galaxy Note or LG Optimus Vu on the market today, it looks like we’ll be seeing one more soon. Also from a Korean company, Pantech, it’s called the Vega S5. It features a 720p 5″ display and packs a Qualcomm dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and a 13-megapixel rear camera. It’s bezel is also supposed to be the thinnest available out there. The phone packs a 2,100mAh battery with a touted 11-hours of talk time.

However, it looks like those of you not living in South Korea will be able to get your hands on the phone. Apparently Pantech will only be releasing the phone in its home country as an exclusive project with SK Telecom. If we do see it outside of South Korea, it’ll probably be rebranded as a different device. The Pantech Vega S5 will go up for pre-order for about $800 on July 4.

The 4.5-inch Vega LTE is not eight months old and the 4.8-inch Vega Racer 2 is still properly wet behind the years. But, the flow of progress abides by no calendars, so welcome the Pantech Vega S5 to the world. It steps up to a full 5-inch IPS LCD with a 720p resolution in a phone that, thanks to a “zero bezel” design, actually has a smaller footprint than the Samsung Galaxy S III. There’s a whopping 13 megapixel shooter in there with zero lag, a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 16GB of internal storage and a 2,100 mAh battery that’s said to deliver 11 hours of talk time. If that sounds like a good combination indeed it could be, but don’t spend too much pining — this handset is destined only for Korean shores.

Pantech Vega S5 boasts 5″ 720p display, 13MP camera

Here’s a conundrum for you: how can a phone with a 5-inch display be smaller than one with 4.8-inches? By cutting down on as much bezel as possible, which is exactly what Pantech has done with the Vega S5. IntoMobile has crunched the numbers, and thanks to a “Zero Bezel” technique Pantech has crammed a 5-inch 720p IPS screen into a chassis that occupies less space than Samsung’s Galaxy S III. The other specs are nothing to sneeze at either.

The phone will come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, LTE connectivity, and a 13-megapixel camera. A 2,100mAh battery is also onboard that’s rated for up to 11 hours of talk time. Going back to the screen, the company says that 5-inches is the optimal size for Korean hands, with thumbs able to touch any part of the screen thanks to the lack of bezel. Pantech says other devices around the 5-inch mark lack portability, a problem which the company thinks it’s solved.

Other features for the phone include zero shutter lag for the camera, continuous autofocus while recording video, and a Mini Window feature that sound similar to Samsung’s Pop Up Play, allowing the user to watch video in a small window while using other functions on the phone. Pantech has also included Smart Voice, its own voice recognition feature.

While it might sound like a nice device, the Vega S5 will only be available in South Korea starting from this month. The company hasn’t announced any plans to take the handset worldwide either, so you’ll have to gaze on it lovingly from afar, or save up some pennies for a grey import that probably won’t be able to get online.

FCC Fridays June 29, 2012

We here at Engadget tend to spend a lot of way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol’ Federal Communications Commission’s site. Since we couldn’t possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there individually, we’ve gathered up an exhaustive listing of every phone and / or tablet getting the stamp of approval over the last week. Enjoy!
