Berlin Boombox Now Available: Paper Power!

This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen the Berlin Boombox. The device turned up on Kickstarter about a year ago when it was seeking funding for production. We lost track of the device after the Kickstarter campaign and it has now turned up again, and this time you can buy it outright.

The DIY Berlin Boombox is a cardboard papercraft kit that requires you to fold and stuff tabs into slots. Other than the cardboard shell for the boombox, it also comes with speakers and other hardware required to make the audio work.

Berlin Boombox

The Berlin Boombox has a pair of small speakers that slot into the little cardboard slots inside the cardboard shell, a volume knob, and a battery pack that holds three AA batteries. Once built, you simply connect your audio device to the speakers using the 3.5 mm plug. This would probably be the perfect ghetto blaster to go with your 80s music collection and giant sheet of cardboard for breakdancing.

The Berlin Boombox is available from Bitemyapple.com for $79.99(USD).

Life-size Mass Effect Jack Papercraft is Massively Impressive

Fans of the Mass Effect franchise of games will love this life-sized version of Jack. The details are every bit as impressive as the character on screen. It’s even more impressive when you consider that she is 3D and made primarily of paper.

jack
This 6-foot, 2-inch tall Jack took about four months to complete – and he used Microsoft Paint to help make the templates. You read that right. Paint. Her creator Tankball doesn’t have Photoshop. Jack does have some wood and wire structure inside to help keep her stable, but she’s mostly made from paper.

There are two speakers in the chest so that he can plug his iPod into her too. Need to do some repairs? Well, Jack comes apart, making fixing her super easy, and protecting her from damage should she fall over.

To say that Tankball did an awesome job is an understatement. Check out the video for all of the details.

Papercraft Analog Digital Clock: Time is Recyclable

Several years ago we saw Alvin Aronson’s minimalist timepiece, which used wood and ceramic to replicate the seven segment digits commonly used in LCD and LED displays.

Instructables member alstroemeria took the idea further, creating a papercraft version of Aronson’s clock.

Alstroemeria used layers of cardstock, an Arduino Uno, 28 servos and a servo controller to make a cheaper and biodegradable version of Aronson’s clock.

Paper Skyrim Frost Dragon: Made from The Elder Scrolls?

It never ceases to amaze me just how much detail you can get in a paper sculpture. It blows my mind. Look at the level of detail on this papercrafted Skyrim frost dragon sculpture. It’s just amazing.

skyrim dragon

It was made by DeviantArtist DaiShiHUN who must be a level 10 Paper Mage. For this project he experimented with new textures and created a more stable base for it, which is a ruined Word Wall. This thing stands about 45 cm (~17 in) tall. He made it more sturdy by filling it with expanding foam.

Well, it looks pretty amazing. This makes me want to dust off my copy of Skyrim and play it again.

Flat-Packed Papercraft Sculptures: Serious Knife Skills

Large-scale sculptures are usually made out durable materials, but these are actually intricately cut from single sheets of paper by the artist Nahoko Kojima.

Through her works, Kojima explores the themes of human existence, animals, and the overall forces of nature. Crafting the Cloud Leopard sculpture shown above took her about 5 months. She’s currently working on a life-sized representation of a polar bear, which is definitely going to be awesome.

Kojima’s sculptures use negative space as much as positive, taking full advantage of the empty spaces to help define her forms.

I wonder if someone could create some animatronics based upon her designs. That could get scary.

10-Foot-Tall Cardboard Optimus Prime: Boxes in Disguise

What do you do with all of those boxes left over from your countless Amazon orders and other cardboard lying around your house? Don’t just throw them into the recycling bin. Do like this guy did, and build a giant badass robot. Like this one. Yep, this is a 10-foot-tall Optimus Prime made out of recycled cardboard.
cardboard prime
Well, cardboard, glue and masking tape. This ‘Cardboard Prime’ was built by Pwarner184, who obviously knows how to work cardboard into geek magic. The shaping of the cardboard is great, and I love how he did the details with masking tape. This is truly papercraft on an epic scale.

cardboard prime1
If any cardboard Decepticons come anywhere near this house, there will be cardboard flying everywhere as Optimus Prime defends his turf. The only things this robot fears are rain, mildew and perhaps an industrial shredder.

Minecraft Papercraft Studio Lets You Print Minecraft Models: Proto-3D Printing

You can already own 3D replicas of your Minecraft avatar thanks to 3D printing. But if you want a cheaper and faster way, you can use Minecraft Papercraft Studio – an iOS app made by UK developer 57Digital – and the cutting edge technology known as “folding” to turn flat paper into blocky models.

minecraft papercraft studio by 57digital

The app is essentially a Minecrafted take on Foldify. It lets you browse thousands of Minecraft skins or import your own by entering your Minecraft.net username. You can then customize your chosen model by adding a cape or a stand or changing its size.

When you print the model, you’ll see that the parts are clearly labeled and that the paper also comes with instructions.

Seems like a very kid-friendly app. You can download Minecraft Papercraft Studiocraft Studio from the iTunes App Store for $2.99 (USD). Sadly you’ll have to buy 57Digital’s other app if you want to make your own Minecraft models. Then again you can just create new models in Minecraft itself.
