ASUS Transformer AiO goes on sale in the US, unites desktop and tablet for $1,299

ASUS Transformer AiO in Android mode

ASUS’ distinctive Transformer AiO has been a long time in coming, having first reached our paws last June. For Americans, it’s at last more than just a fantastical idea: Amazon, J&R, Rakuten and other US-friendly online retailers now list the oddest of odd PCs as on sale, and usually in stock. For a typical $1,299, more adventurous buyers get a Windows 8 base desktop with a 3.1GHz Core i5, 8GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive, a DVD drive and a GeForce GT 730M. The real fun, of course, rests in its display. Remove that 18.4-inch LCD from its dock and it suddenly becomes a gigantic Tegra 3-based Android tablet running Jelly Bean. We’re not sure if we’ll ever completely wrap our heads around the concept, but those who understand ASUS’ expanded definition of an all-in-one can shop at the source links.

Dark Souls sells over 2.3 million copies worldwide

Action-RPG Dark Souls has sold an estimated 2,367,000 copies worldwide, according to the executive director of “From Software” (Dark Soul’s publisher in Japan), Eiichi Nakajima. The sales have amazed From Software so much that it decided to launch an Xbox 360 version of the game in Japan. While the game was released for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 overseas, it was only limited to the PS3 in Japan.

Dark Souls sells over 2.3 million copies worldwide

According to From Software’s data, over 375,000 copies of Dark Souls was purchased for the PlayStation in Japan. Overseas, over 1.3 million copies of Dark Souls was purchased for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 combined. From Software had a separate chart for copies of Dark Souls with the “Artorias of the Abyss” expansion. The expansion was included in the PC edition of Dark Souls, and was released as a DLC for PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 users. 137,000 copies with the expansion sold in Japan for both the PC and the PlayStation 3, while 555,000 of the copies sold overseas for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

These figures come shortly after gameplay footage of the game’s sequel, Dark Souls II, was released. Dark Souls II will feature the same gameplay mechanics as Dark Souls, but will feature a world that is twice as big. The game will still keep its challenging gameplay renown in the series since Demon Souls. Yui Tanimura, co-director of Dark Souls, states,

“We do not plan on having an Easy Mode since we are creating this game with a thought that challenge and difficulty are core elements of the game.”

Dark Souls II will again be released by From Software in Japan, and like Dark Souls, will be released by Namco Bandai in North America. It will be available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and the PC for both countries, and will continue on the same momentum as its predecessors. While Dark Souls took place in the kingdom of Lordran, Dark Souls II will take place in a completely new setting. The game will once again revolve around a character seeking out a cure for a curse he has been afflicted with. Check out the 12-minute Dark Souls II gameplay video above.

Free-To-Play Ridge Racer Driftopia Headed To PS3, PC In 2013

Namco Bandai’s Ridge Racer series has always been considered a more arcade-y racing game as its gameplay mechanics, especially when drifting, can be considered to be extremely exaggerated. The next game in the series will take an equally exaggerated step in another direction, but it isn’t to make its gameplay crazier, instead, it’s a step in the free-to-play direction.

Ridge Racer Driftopia will be the first Ridge Racer title that will be completely free-to-play as you can purchase cars, XP packs and repair kits to help enhance the experience. Just how much of the game will be free-to-play is unknown at this time, but we hope Namco Bandai will at least be able to deliver a Ridge Racer game for fans of the series without nickel-and-diming its customers by providing more DLC options than anything else, which it did with its Ridge Racer for Vita. Medion Akoya P2004 gives the UK an understated 24-inch all-in-one for £500

Medion Akoya P2004 24inch allinone hits the UK for a cheapandcheerful 500

Medion isn’t the best-known PC badge outside of Europe, but it does have an occasional eye for sleek design. We’d say the Lenovo-backed company’s new Akoya P2004 offers that kind of style UK crowd. The all-in-one fits a 23.6-inch, 1080p display into a minimalist design that’s oddly charming for what’s ultimately a budget machine. No one would call the P2004 feature-loaded when it’s carrying a dual-core 3.2GHz Core i3, 4GB of RAM, a 1TB hard drive and a DVD burner, but the price is right at a frugal £500 ($770). The catch? If you like what’s on offer, you’re going to have to swing by ASDA, which has the UK exclusive. Still, we wouldn’t object too much to picking up a fairly tasteful Windows 8 PC alongside the groceries.

PC market tumbles as IDC points at Windows 8

If reporting that the entirety of the PC market weren’t enough of a punch in the gut for Microsoft from the analytical group IDC, the suggestion that their newest operating system is to blame really, really is. What you’re about to witness is the continued downfall of the PC industry in the charts of the IDC, this most recent quarter’s report being much worse for ware than we’re sure any of the manufacturers listed would have liked. When your only job is to create PCs and you hoped Windows 8 was going to bring the industry into a shining light, you’re probably not too happy right about now.

lenovoyoga11-windows8_display-580x416

As this most recent IDC Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker report shows, the first quarter of 2013 was not extremely kind to the likes of HP, Lenovo, Dell, Acer, ASUS, and the rest of the bunch. With a total average drop in PC shipments of 13.9%, it’s not appearing too positive for the near future in next-level PC production. That 13.9% drop is compared to the fourth quarter of 2012, while year-on-year the decline was a rather similar -12.7%.

“At this point, unfortunately, it seems clear that the Windows 8 launch not only failed to provide a positive boost to the PC market, but appears to have slowed the market.” – Bob O’Donnell, IDC Program Vice President, Clients and Displays

You’ll find that Lenovo – good ol’ Lenovo – was the only vendor to have stayed flat from the quarter before this one to the one we’ve just completed. Their market share also went up a couple of percentage points while each of the other top-5 groups decreased by at least .2 points of a percentage – that’s Dell hanging in there as well. HP remains on top of the stack with a 15.7% share of the market but was hit hard with a 23.7% drop over the past year.

charts

“While some consumers appreciate the new form factors and touch capabilities of Windows 8, the radical changes to the UI, removal of the familiar Start button, and the costs associated with touch have made PCs a less attractive alternative to dedicated tablets and other competitive devices. Microsoft will have to make some very tough decisions moving forward if it wants to help reinvigorate the PC market.” – Bob O’Donnell, IDC Program Vice President, Clients and Displays

According to the top 5 vendors chart of United States PC Shipments, Apple reaches in for a piece of the pie – as does Toshiba. Here we’ve still got HP up on top, Dell not far behind, and Apple butting heads with Toshiba and Lenovo. Here you’ll find Lenovo once again the only brand of the top five to not have lost market share over the past year with a 13% gain from Q1 of 2012 to Q1 of 2013.

Of course when you average the collection of the top 5 vendors of PCs in the United States, you still get a cool 11% drop this quarter compared to 2012′s Q1. Apple on its own also lost 7.5 points year-on-year in this market, still running strong with an estimated 1,418 units shipped in Q1 2013.

Have a peek at the timeline below for other recent IDC reports to see how the mobile and desktop PC universes are making their time here as we roll into the spring of 2013.

Dishonored DLC Knife of Dunwall flips the tables: now you’ve done it

In the trailer you’re about to see for the next bit of storyline for the Dishonored video game legacy, you’ll find yourself not in the shoes of the protagonist. Instead you’ll be the assassin who actually did murder the Empress – and though you feel the guilt of doing so weighing on your mind, you’ve still got a job to do. Of course you’re still “Dishonored”, so to speak, but you’re under a cloak – and you’ve got one massive amount of shadowy skills to bash your way forth with.

daud

While the original Dishonored story followed a man by the name of Corvo Attano, “the last bodyguard to the Empress”, this time you’re playing one of the assassins that inadvertently ruined Attano’s life. While it’s not said explicitly in the trailer you’re about to see, we can’t help but wonder if you and Attano will be meeting by the time this whole saga is over. Your name this time is Daud, and for six months you’ve had the weight of the world on your shoulders.

You’ll be BAMFing your way from one wall to another, knifing your enemies in the back here and there, and electrifying all those who would oppose you without end. This DLC for Dishonored will have you working with tricks you’ve seen before as well as a whole bunch of new bits and pieces only a real hardcore OG assassin would know.

dishonored

This downloadable addition to your Dishonored experience will require that you already own and have installed the game (or have the disk in your drive if you’re on a console). You’ll be downloading Dishonored: The Knife of Dunwall starting on April 16th for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC all at once. Make with the cash drop!

IDC: Worldwide PC shipments fell 13.9% in first quarter

The IDC reports that worldwide shipments of PCs declined 13.9% in Q1 2013 compared to Q1 2012. The 13.9% decline is much higher than the IDC expected in its forecast. It states that the decline of PC shipments most likely has to do with the poor reception of Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system. The IDC also states that Microsoft’s hybrid tablet/laptops have seen poor sales due to its high prices and inhibited component supplies.

IDC PC shipments fell 13.9 percent in first quarter

In Q1 2013, there were a total of 76,294,000 PCs shipped worldwide. HP accounted for 11,997,000 of those shipments, garnering a 15.7% market share. However, its total shipments last quarter was 23.7% less than the 15,726,000 it shipped in Q1 2012. Lenovo came in second place with 11,700,000 PCs shipped, and 15.3% of the market share. Its PC shipments was off only by 5,000 compared to Q1 2012.

Dell came in 3rd place with 9.010,000 PCs shipped, and 11.8% of the market share. Its shipments dropped 10.9% from its 10,110,000 shipments in Q1 2012. Acer came in 4th place with 6,150,000 PCs shipped, claiming 8.1% of the market. It suffered a whopping 31.3% decline from its Q1 2012′s 8,952,000 PCs shipped. ASUS comes in last with 4,363,000 PCs shipped, claiming 5.7% of the market. It suffered a 19.2% decline from the 5,401,000 PC shipments it made in Q1 2012.

All of the other PC manufacturers shipped a total of 33,075,000 PCs, claiming the remaining 43.4% of the market. Their shipments dropped 10% from last year when it shipped 36,739,000 PCs. IDC Research Director of Personal Computing, David Daoud, states, “Although the reduction in shipments was not a surprise, the magnitude of the contraction is both surprising and worrisome.” According to the IDC, Q1 2013 was the worst quarter ever for PCs, and it has been tracking PC quarterly shipments since 1994. The IDC states that a major factor for this huge decline is most likely due to the restructuring that both HP and Dell are going through

Drop In PC Shipments Linked To Windows 8 Flop

Drop In PC Shipments Linked To Windows 8 Flop

According to a report published by International Data Corp., first quarter global computer shipments dipped 14% as compared to last year. The decline is almost double than the forecasted figure, which was pegged at 7.7%. In fact this is the worst quarter for PC shipments since 1994 when the International Data Corp. started keeping track of quarterly PC shipments. Weak economy is not the only thing that is hurting PC sales, more and more customers are opting for mobile devices. Windows 8 was expected to give PC shipments a boost, but so far it has failed to do so.

IDC’s analyst Bob O’Donnell says that while consumers appreciate the new form factors and touch capabilities of Windows 8, the major changes in UI, removal of Start button and rising costs associated with touch enabled PCs are driving users away to dedicated tablets. Right now there are no signs that the decline in traditional PC sales is going to end in the near future. Perhaps it is time PC manufacturers stepped up their game? What steps do you think PC manufacturers should take to plug the decline as soon as possible?

IDC: PC shipments in Q1 faced their steepest known drop to date

IDC PC shipments in Q1 faced their steepest drop known to date

If Windows 8 is the ticket to a bounce-back in PC sales, it’s going to be a long, slow recovery. At least, as long as you ask IDC. It estimates that worldwide computer shipments in the first quarter of 2013 fell 13.9 percent to 76.3 million, which is the steepest quarterly drop the research firm has recorded since it started tracking PCs back in 1994. While the exact factors at work aren’t clear, IDC blames it on a mix of customers spooked by Windows 8’s unfamiliar interface, the continued rise of mobile devices, and the decline of the netbook. This isn’t helped by the higher typical prices of touchscreen PCs, or by restructuring efforts at computing giants like Dell and HP.

Who’s reigning in this apparently declining PC empire, then? Worldwide, it’s a different picture than it was a few months ago: HP is back on top at 15.7 percent, followed by Lenovo, Dell, Acer and ASUS. The American climate is somewhat more familiar, with HP in front at 25.1 percent while being chased by Dell, Apple, Toshiba and Lenovo. With the exception of Lenovo, however, virtually all of the manufacturers involved saw at least some decline in their PC shipments. To IDC, that’s a sign that vendors and Microsoft need to find an antidote to the crazes for smartphones and tablets — and find it quickly.

“Defiance” is both a TV show and a video game

The new SyFy drama “Defiance” is taking a big leap and is going to be the first TV show to have a video game counterpart weaved into it at the same time. While it’s normal for some shows and movies to have video games made after they air, like The Walking Dead, Defiance will seamlessly connect both simultaneously. The actual show will take place in a revamped St. Louis, while you will be able to create a new character in a revamped San Francisco.

Defiance is a combination of both a TV show and a video game

The TV show, which is set to premiere next Monday, is set 30 years after 2013. Aliens known as Votans have come to Earth in search of a new home. After some conflicts, and a Votan ambassador being assassinated by a human supremacist, the Votans and Humans go to war. The war wages on for 30 years before both species agree to a ceasefire to ensure their survival. Joshua Nolan, a former Marine, declares himself the Chief Lawkeeper of Defiance (the revamped St. Louis) to maintain peace between the Votans and the humans, and to protect the town from the dangers of the outside world.

Defiance worked together with Trion Worlds to develop the Defiance MMO. The game is available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and the PC for $59.99. Characters are able to create their own characters and play in the Defiance world. There are massive co-op battles, tons of weapons, “Fierce Shadow War” multiplayer, and constant updates, including 5 DLCs set to come out in the future. For PC users, there is a deluxe edition available for $99.99 that gives you many extra bonuses. There is no subscription fee for the game.

Kevin Murphy, writer and producer of Desperate Housewives, is the executive producer for Defiance. In an interview with Reuters, he stated, “What’s unusual about what we’re doing… is we’re building the second-screen concept into the actual DNA of the show-game combo.” He states that in future seasons of the show, there will be crossovers between the game and the TV show, including implementing actual user characters into the TV show in later seasons and having actions in the video game affect the plot of the show. The game and the show cost $100 million in total to create, and the crossover between both will hopefully secure a dedicated fan base.
