Saint’s Row IV unleashed: open-playground madness on tap!

It’s time again for the most wild and crazy blast of do-anything gaming madness with the next chapter of the franchise: Saints Row IV. The idea that this game series would continue was doused last year as the original owner of the title THQ was kicked in the gut and closed shop – as it turns out, the developers behind the series survived, and being purchased by none other than Koch Media in the time between then and now, Volition will once again be allowing us into their collective wild and crazy mind environment. The teaser for Saint’s Row IV was revealed today.

What you’re working with here in the newest chapter in the Saint’s Row franchise is another look at the go-anywhere and do-anything universe the public first fell in love with in the game known as Grand Theft Auto III. Open-run blast-anything and ride-everything returns here with Saint’s Row IV and we couldn’t be more pumped up about it. Have a peek at the first teaser trailer right this minute!

This game has been teased as taking place everywhere “from the Crack House to the White House” with no less than “ball-busting” excellence from start to finish. As you’ll see here, this game is ready to allow you to ride a car through town, murder your way through enemies galore, and fly. Fly right through the sky if you want – go for it!

The release of this game is set for some time inside August of 2013. At the moment it’s looking like a PC-certain release with current-generation consoles on deck. This means we’ll likely see Saint’s Row IV on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 – no word yet on PlayStation 4 or Xbox 720 action as yet. Stay tuned for more!

Saints Row 4 Announced With August 20 Release Date

One of favorite open-world sandbox games that released in 2011 has to be Saints Row 3 as it had just the right amount of action along with its outrageous humor. When THQ went under, the game’s rights were sold to publisher Deep Silver, who is announcing today along with the game’s developer, Volition, a Saints Row 4 is currently in the works.

The news comes to us by way of a trailer that is completely overrun with in-game footage which contains a number of iconic Saints Row visuals. You’ll witness people blowing things up, car-surfing and even witness strategically placed black bars over certain body parts.

The trailer doesn’t only deliver in-game visuals, but it also announces the game will be released on August 20 in North America on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. If you were hoping for a PlayStation 4 or next Xbox release, it looks like that isn’t planned for Saints Row 4 at this time, although we’d be more excited to see what Saints Row 5 will look like on next-generation consoles.

AMD Richland chips will arrive in notebooks next month, promise better graphics, battery life and a few extras

First notebooks with AMD Richland chips due out next month, should bring better battery life and some nice little extras video

Yearly product cycles? AMD doesn’t need that long, thank you. It’s planning to release a fresh batch of low-power APUs just 11 months after Trinity. Known as Richland, this generation won’t be vastly different at the silicon level, as it’s built on the same 32nm process as Trinity, has the same number of transistors and offers very similar compute performance in terms of raw GFLOPs. However, there are some noteworthy upgrades in attendance, including a move to Radeon HD 8000M graphic processors, which are claimed to deliver a 20-40 percent increase in “visual performance” in higher-end models, plus power-saving tweaks that should provide over an hour of additional battery life while watching 720p video — perhaps even enough for two extra episodes of House of Cards. Some Windows 8 enhancements will also tag along for the ride, and these will promptly be revealed if you read on past the break.

Lenovo Japan – Erazer X700 – Lenovo enters into the Japanese gaming desktop PC market with their first gaming PC

Lenovo Japan started selling their first gaming desktop PC “Erazer X700″ produced by German company Medion that Lenovo acquired in 2011. It is a recommended PC for the PC version of “Bio Hazard 6″ and “Sim City” that are going to be released on March 22.

Xi3 starts Piston pre-orders: buy an early Steambox for under $1,000

Xi3 starts Piston preorders buy a protoSteambox for under $1,000

While Xi3’s Piston may only be a Steambox through its software optimization, that still leaves us with a milestone on our hands now that the system is available for pre-orders: it’s the first Valve-blessed PC on sale. If you’re willing to set aside just under $1,000 ($900 during SXSW), you can claim a Big Picture-friendly mini PC with an embedded, 3.2GHz version of AMD’s quad-core A10 in addition to 8GB of RAM and a 128GB solid-state drive. There’s no mention of the conventional spinning storage referenced at CES. Expansion is limited to larger-capacity SSDs, although that’s not surprising when the entire computer is smaller than a GeForce GTX Titan. The real jolt will be the launch timing. Xi3 won’t have Pistons shipping until around the holidays, which could leave some of us hunting for less-than-official (if considerably larger) substitutes for the full Steam experience.

EA Maxis cops to ‘dumb’ SimCity launch, offers early adopters a free game

The botched launch of the new SimCity game has upset many this week, however there is a little good news. EA Maxis exec Lucy Bradshaw posted that the company is working on its server issues, with capacity reportedly up 120 percent in the last 48 hours and “disrupted experiences” down 80 percent. As a way of making up for a launch that was “dumb” for not anticipating far more players and activity than seen in its beta, EA will offer all those who’ve activated a copy by March 18th a free PC game download. There’s no word on which game(s) from the EA portfolio will be available but users will be notified by email. The one thing they won’t be getting however is what many are asking for: an offline option that avoids all the server mess and entanglements of always-on DRM.

Samsung’s memory business president compares Windows 8 to Vista

President of Samsung‘s memory business division, Jun Dong-soo, has had less than favorable things to say about Windows 8, stating that it is just as bad as Windows Vista. This was said at a press meeting at the COEX InterContinental Hotel in Seoul earlier today. He went on to discuss the PC industry, blaming its faltering on Microsoft’s operating system.

It’s no secret the PC industry has been stumbling, no small part of that being due to the proliferation of smartphones and tablets. But Dong-soo says the blame also falls on Microsoft, with its Windows 8 operating system having received a mixed reception among consumers. Back in November 2012, for example, a survey by Avast showed that a mere 9-percent of users in the US planned to upgrade to a new PC with Windows 8.

Said Jun Dong-soo, “The global PC industry is steadily shrinking despite the launch of Windows 8. I think the Windows 8 system is no better than the previous Windows Vista platform. MS’s rollout of its Windows Surface tablet is seeing lackluster demand. Meanwhile, previous vigorous pitches by Intel and MS for thinner ultra-books simply failed and I believe that’s mostly because of the less-competitive Windows platform.”

He went on to say that it is expected the PC industry itself will fade away, an expectation that has prompted Samsung to greatly reduce the amount of memory chips it produces, instead ramping up production of chips for smartphones and tablets. He then discussed the Galaxy S IV and Samsung’s unveiling of the device in New York next Thursday.

Reticulating splines for reticulating times: the SimCity debacle

Reticulating splines for reticulating times the SimCity debacle

SimCity is in shambles. Not the virtual cities built within its digital confines, mind you, but the game itself. The reboot of EA Maxis’ classic SimCity this week has been a roller coaster of emotions, with positive reviews and fanfare pushing hype levels past 11… all of which fell apart just after midnight on Tuesday morning when the game launched to a crushing response from fans. Unlike many games, including previous SimCity entries, the new SimCity requires a constant connection to EA’s servers. It requires a connection regardless of whether or not you choose to play with others, even — a bold move, and one that was met with much wariness among gamers when announced last year.

Given the mass popularity of the SimCity series and the glowing praise the game received ahead of release from press, it was no surprise that the sheer number of customers trying to snag the game — and subsequently, play it — overwhelmed EA’s servers. The result? Days of choppy play, or, more often, an inability to access the game at all. Worse yet, EA’s started shutting off parts of the game in hopes of lowering server loads across the board, which (understandably) angered many players. So, how did we get here?

Samsung Electronics exec blames Windows 8 for the decline of the PC

Samsung Electronics exec blames Windows 8 for the decline of the PC

Jun Dong-soo isn’t mincing his words. The Samsung Electronics head of memory chip business has a strong distaste for Microsoft’s nascent Windows 8 OS, a viewpoint he made clear to reporters in Seoul, South Korea today. Addressing market research that indicates global PC shipments are on the decline, Dong-soo told reporters that the market segment has failed to see a boost from Windows 8 as it’s “no better than the previous Windows Vista platform.” Dong-soo even went on to link the poor attach rate for ultrabooks to Microsoft’s “less competitive Windows platform.” Unsurprisingly, this had led the Samsung exec to shift his division’s focus from the fabrication of “conventional” memory chips to the more profitable and booming mobile chip segment. A move no doubt bolstered by the continued prominence of Samsung’s Galaxy portfolio (e.g., Note II, GS III and upcoming GS IV). You have to hand it to Dong-soo, no one can accuse him of dealing in executive doublespeak.

Asus Transformer AiO launched

The Asus Transformer AiO (All in One) has been touted to be the first all-in-one desktop PC which is capable of running not only Windows 8, but Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as well, in either desktop or tablet mode. Yeah, you read that right, Asus has taken off the kid’s gloves this time around with the Transformer AiO which certainly ups the ante when it comes to a dual-booting device.

It is incredibly innovative of Asus to do so, rolling out the Transformer AiO which offers users the option of a tablet’s mobility alongside the performance of a powerful desktop computer, all without having to compromise on design and functionality. The Transformer AiO is said to boast of a desktop PC Station that will feature 3rd generation Intel Core desktop processor technology which enables one to enjoy an outstanding Windows 8 performance, while the presence of a detachable 18.4-inch multi-touch display will carry NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 quad-core processor so that you can have fun with an optimum Android 4.1 Jelly Bean user experience.

The good news does not end there, either, as this particular innovation will allow the tablet to run Windows 8 in Remote Desktop mode, clearly making this a first of its kind in the world since no All-in-One PC has ever managed to offer such flexibility, innovation or design before, making Asus lay claim to such an exclusive device.

When it comes to connectivity options, the Asus Transformer AiO will not come up short, as you get a quartet of USB 3.0 ports, something that even high end Ultrabooks lack, in addition to an HDMI out port for you to hook up a monitor for extended display options, while the 18.4-inch LED-backlit display will boast of 1080p HD resolution alongside a 10-point multi-touch and IPS technology, enabling it to deliver bright, vibrant images with 178-degree wide viewing angles. Expect the Asus Transformer AiO to arrive sometime in Q2 2013 in North America, where it ought to start from $1,299 onward.
