The Toshiba Canvio Basics 3.0 range has just been expanded, where the highest end model is now capable of toting around up to 2TB of your favorite digital memories as well as any other files. Lenovo ThinkPad X131e Chromebook

The traditional chalk and blackboard is still a staple in most of the classrooms around the world, although those living in emerging countries and more backwater areas might not even have a classroom with four walls to call their own, but will instead have to settle for a shack or even in an open air environment. Some of the private schools in tropical countries, on the other hand, have superb facilities and include air-conditioning all year round, now how about that? Well, for areas where learning online is starting to pick up, the notebook would be an essential tool for kids to bring to class, and with over 1,000 schools using Chromebooks these days, it opens up the door for teachers and students alike to take advantage of the web’s vast educational resources. Having said that, Lenovo has just announced a Chromebook that will be based on their popular ThinkPad laptop range, and have dubbed it the Lenovo ThinkPad X131e Chromebook.

Since all classrooms possess unique hardware and software needs, the Lenovo ThinkPad X131e Chromebook intends to deliver the hassle-free experience of Chrome OS alongside the ThinkPad’s rugged design, where there will be specialized features such as a rubber bumper located around the top cover for added protection, stronger corners, reinforced hinges and hinge brackets, and a high definition (HD) LED anti-glare screen.

All of the above mentioned seems to make the Lenovo ThinkPad X131e Chromebook well armed to handle the everyday rigors of a classroom, and thanks to a battery that Lenovo claims is able to last up to 6.5 hours courtesy of its latest-generation Intel processor, the ThinkPad Chromebook ought to have more than enough underneath its hood to handle even the most active students and teachers.

The new Lenovo ThinkPad X131e Chromebook will hit the US for a mere $429 each from February 26th onwards, and schools are then able to add management and support from Google for a one-time cost of $30 per Chromebook.

Super WiFi Antenna helps extend your WiFi reach

When you add the prefix “Super” to anything, and rest assured, expectations on the performance of that particular noun would be sent to sky high proportions. So when we came across the $119.95 Super WiFi Antenna, there was this naughty bit in me that wanted to tear into all that the Super WiFi Antenna promised but could not deliver, but just to give the benefit of the doubt to First Street Online, let us see what this device touts.

For starters, it claims to be so powerful and amped up, that it is capable of picking up available WiFi signals from up to a mile away, how about that? All you need to do is plug it into an available USB port on your notebook or computer, and you’re good to go. For it to be weather and UV resistant would mean the Super WiFi Antenna is rather hardy, and I strongly suspect that the notebook it is plugged into will not be that adventurous to remain exposed to the sun for long hours on end, let alone the user unless he/she is in need of a tan. Of course, this is great only if you have a free WiFi network to connect to, but otherwise, it could be put to good use when you want to work from your yard under the sun.

iTwin Connect unveiled

Security of your precious data is often one of the priorities to have right at the top of your computing list, and even more when it comes to giant corporations. Well, there are many ways to leak out data (unwillingly or otherwise), and here is a potential solution for those who want to enjoy private and restriction-free browsing – with the iTwin Connect. The iTwin Connect will also be able to offer the wonders of remote file access and access to the home/office network (i.e., functioning as a personal virtual private network or VPN), coming in a simple and highly portable device form factor.

Basically, the iTwin Connect will comprise of two identical halves. In order to install, all you need to do is plug the device into a USB port on the home/office PC, detach one half of the device which will then be designated as the iTwin Connect “key”, and carry that detached bit along. Whenever you are on the move, plug this key into a notebook and a secure VPN tunnel will magically be created to the home/office PC.

For the non-techies out there, there are some obvious benefits to reap from the iTwin Connect, where among them include ‘Teleport Me’, a feature that lets you browse privately and without being tied down to any restrictions. All Internet traffic will be directed via the secure VPN tunnel and the Internet is thus accessed via the home/office PC’s Internet connection.

Not only that, ‘Teleport Me’ will also provide private access to the Internet via iTwin’s dedicated network servers in US, Europe or Asia/Pacific. This bit comes across as useful should the home/office PC be in a position where it cannot be left on, and also should your browsing sessions require an IP locale that is different from that of the PC.

You can pick up the iTwin Connect for $129 a pop.

Not Your Standard Keyboard

How great would it be to mouse or type into thin air and see everything in front of you? Sort of like Minority Report. Rather than having a specific device to control actions or input (i.e. mouse or keyboard) it would rock to just have it all there – all the functions you need at your fingertips. That certainly may be realistic down the road. But peripherals will be necessary for the immediate future.

One creative designer decided that although a peripheral may be needed – why not make it suit more possible needs out there, while also looking like something from the future. The Luminae devices from TransluSense could potentially change how we navigate our computers. The glass Keyboard+ and Touchpad+ enable you to customize the controls you want via different overlays. Create a qwerty keyboard with 10-key pad. Or maybe you need 10-key and mouse pad. Maybe you want to use the device to both type and mouse (“Type and Swipe”). Or maybe your work requires a non-standard keyboard. You can literally have different overlays for different needs. Also choose your glowing LED color too. Built inside the Luminae units are cameras which judge when your hands break the light pattern of both visible and infrared LEDs. Based on the overlay you have on the keyboard will react. Sounds odd not to have a tactile keyboard. But it sure would be functional – and cool looking. At $500 this may not be the keyboard for everyone, but for those that are you may feel one step closer to the future.

Kingston HyperX Predator USB flash drive does the 1TB dance

You know that SSDs are going to get a run for their money when the USB flash drive capacity has upped the ante by more than a mile. Case in point, CES 2013 saw the introduction of the Kingston HyperX Predator that weighs in at 1TB of storage space. Yes sir, who would have thought that USB flash drives would hit the magical 1TB mark so soon, when it was not too long ago that a 64GB USB flash drive proved to be the bomb? Kingston’s effort will come in 512GB and 1TB flavors, and of course, at that kind of generous storage space, your wallet is going to deflate significantly, too.

Kingston has been outdone by Victorinox a year ago though, where their 1TB Swiss Army USB flash drive was touted to retail for a whopping $3,000 assuming it was released to the mass market. With so much space, it makes perfect sense for the Kingston HyperX Predator to jive to USB 3.0 connectivity, and on paper, boasts read speeds of 240MB/s and write speeds of 160MB/s. Since the 512GB version of the USB flash drive is going for $1,750 a pop, it would be safe to assume that the final sticker price for the 1TB version will be nearly double.
