Beta sign-up for The Witcher 2 modding tools now live

Ask any PC gamer what makes the platform so great, and (after bragging about the hardware in their rig) mods are bound to come up at one point or another. After the immense success of The Witcher 2, CD Projekt Red is ready to open the game to modders, giving players the opportunity to create their own adventures set within the Witcher universe. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, and if you’re interested in CDP’s REDKit, you may be pleased to know that you can now sign-up for the beta.

Yes, unfortunately CD Projekt Red won’t just be unleashing REDKit and letting modders go nuts, as it has to make sure it has a good platform to offer modders first. That’s where you come in: if you’re a modder, CD Projekt Red wants you to sign up for this beta and help it develop a better set of tools to eventually offer to everyone. Beta sign-ups start today and run through September 30, so make sure you get your application in before then.

In a statement today, CDP studio head Adam Badowski explained what makes REDKit so great. “We have our own vision for RPGs, they should present an exciting story and give players lots of choices that really matter,” he said. “The REDkit is designed to create adventures that way – mature, non-linear and engrossing stories set in vivid worlds filled with believable characters.”

The Witcher 2 is already an amazing game on its own, but with modders constantly providing new content, it stands to become even better. We don’t know when CD Projekt is planning to wrap up this closed beta, and for that matter, we’re not sure when the studio will be releasing the finished toolkit. When it finally does, however, it’ll be big, so be sure to keep an ear to SlashGear for more information!

Steam Big Picture Mode beta kicks off in September

Valve has given us a better idea of when it plans to launch the beta for Steam‘s Big Picture Mode. Steam Big Picture Mode, as many of you already know, allows players to hook up their computers to their televisions and play the games in their Steam library on the big screen. In the latest episode of GameTrailers TV (which features a rather hairy-looking Gabe Newell) Valve’s Greg Coomer announced that the beta will be coming early next month.

“In early September you’ll be able to hop into a beta, click a button, and see Steam reformatted for your TV and usable with a PC game controller, or a mouse and keyboard if you want to play that way,” Coomer said. He pointed out that there are some games that are better suited for a gamepad, so naturally those games will be the best choice for Steam Big Picture Mode. Of course, Valve isn’t going to restrict which games you can play on a television, with Crooner saying that everything will still be there when you make the transition from the computer desk to the living room couch.

We’ve known about Steam Big Picture Mode since spring 2011, and now it seems that everything is finally coming together. Steam’s Big Picture Mode actually inadvertently led to rumors of a Steam console. This reported “Steam box” turned out to be a box that Valve was using to test Big Picture Mode, with the company quashing any rumors that it was about to enter the console space rather quickly.

Big Picture Mode is just one of a few intriguing Steam features that will be rolling out in the coming months. There’s also Steam Greenlight, a feature that lets players vote on which games become available on Steam, and Valve is also currently working on an overhaul of the Steam Community. It’s an exciting time to be a Steam user, so stay tuned.

Mists of Pandaria’s excellent opening cinematic revealed

The release date for World of Warcraft‘s latest expansion, Mists of Pandaria, is right around the corner, and as such, Blizzard has started to ramp up the marketing. Today we’re being treated to a brand new cinematic trailer for the game, and we have to say it’s pretty excellent. The question is: will it be enough to get players interested in returning to World of Warcraft?

The trailer focuses on a Human and an Orc who have washed ashore in a strange place after a naval battle. Once they discover each other, they begin fighting it what appears to be some kind of old ruins, destroying some ancient-looking relics in the process. It’s then that one of the Pandaren interrupts and shows them both what’s what. After both of them have been beaten back by the Panda, the Human and the Orc realize that they have washed up on Pandaria, and we’re treated to shots of sprawling, beautiful wilderness, populated by Pandaren who are training for battle.

It’s definitely one of the better cinematic trailers we’ve seen in a long time. With an exciting battle, a wonderful soundtrack, and a little bit of humor, cinematic trailers don’t get much better. Blizzard knows it has to impress too, as World of Warcraft‘s numbers have been slipping a bit lately. Couple that with the fact that reaction to Mists of Pandaria was mixed when the expansion was revealed at BlizzCon last year, and Blizzard has its work cut out for it.

World of Warcraft‘s subscriber numbers will almost certainly increase once Mists of Pandaria is released, but the hard part will be getting those returning (or new) subscribers to hang around once they’ve finished the expansion. Blizzard has wowed us with the opening cinematic, but now it has to wow us with the expansion itself. We don’t have much longer to wait, as Mists of Pandaria is releasing on September 25.

SimCity closed beta registration now live

It’s been nearly 10 long years since SimCity 4 was unleashed, and next February, we’ll finally be getting a new installment in the main franchise. Electronic Arts and Maxis seem to be making a number of changes with in SimCity, and if you want to check it out ahead of time, you might be pleased to know that you can now register to be in the upcoming closed beta. Of course, you may not get in, but you’ll never know unless you try.

Registration went live shortly after Electronic Arts discussed the beta during its Gamescom press conference. We’re not sure when this beta itself is going to go live, but we imagine (or hope, whichever term you prefer) that it’s only a few weeks away. Also unknown is which platforms are included in this beta, as Electronic Arts didn’t clarify if this beta is open to those playing on a Mac.

This closed beta isn’t just going down to offer longtime SimCity fans a look at the new iteration. In many ways, it’s a necessity for Maxis and Electronic Arts, as they’re requiring that all SimCity players have a persistent Internet connection while playing. The idea behind it is that individual players will be part of a larger persistent world, which – aside from the thinly veiled always-on DRM – does sound pretty cool. Let’s just hope that Maxis and Electronic Arts can get all of the kinks worked out before release – after all, remember how all of that beta testing helped the launch of Diablo III?

As stated above, we don’t know when this beta will be going live, but with registration now up and running, it can’t be far off. Given the large following SimCity has built in the past two decades, you can count on the fact that a lot of people will be interested in signing up, so good luck getting in. The registration form can be found here, and be sure to keep checking back with us here at SlashGear for more information on SimCity!

Dead Space 3 release date targets early February 2013

We already told you that Electronic Arts used its Gamescom press conference to reveal Battlefield 3 Premium Edition, but it was also there that the release date for Dead Space 3 was announced. The latest installment in the excellent Dead Space series will launch on February 5, 2013 in the US and February 8 in Europe, so get ready to go to war with the Necropmorphs all over again. Electronic Arts also announced that those who pre-order Dead Space 3 will be getting a free upgrade to the Limited Edition, which includes two DLC bundles.

The bundles in question have been dubbed “First Contact” and “Witness the Truth.” First Contact grants players the First Contact suit of armor and the Negotiator weapon. Both sport a golden finish, with Negotiator capable of “bursting a man-sized organism into several pieces with a single shot.” On the other hand, we have the Witness the Truth bundle, which comes the Witness armor and the Evangelizer weapon, a gun that is both a tactical shotgun and an AL-2g assault rifle.

To accompany the release date announcement, Electronic Arts also revealed Dead Space 3‘s new weapon crafting system. A first for the series, this system will allow players to craft and upgrade weapons using various components (obviously). We’re told that the weapons included in the Limited Edition bundle packs can be used as blueprints in crafting mode, so it sounds like you’ll be able to make those two weapons even more absurd if you wish.

Dead Space 3 has experienced its share of controversy among series fans, as this new games takes the conflict out of space and places it on the frozen planet Tau Volantis. It also introduces a new co-op mode, which is another first for the series, so there are some pretty significant changes this time around. Will Dead Space 3 still be able to muster the excellent review scores the series is known for? We’ll find out on February 5.

Electronic Arts announces Battlefield 3 Premium Edition

It’s Gamescom week, and Electronic Arts has kicked things off by announcing Battlefield 3 Premium Edition. No, that isn’t a typo – Battlefield 3 is indeed getting a new edition, 10 months after release. As the name suggests, this new version of Battlefield 3 comes packed with a membership to Battlefield Premium, so if you’ve held out on buying Battlefield 3, this might be worth checking out.

As many of you already know, Battlefield Premium is a service that allows die-hard fans to get more out of Battlefield 3. Much like Call of Duty Elite, it gives access to all past, present, and future Battlefield 3 DLC, allowing players to get in on new DLC a couple weeks earlier before non-Premium members. There are other bonuses, such as exclusive weapons and dog tags, but the early access to DLC is the main draw of Battlefield Premium.

Battlefield Premium memberships run $50 a pop, but this Battlefield 3 Premium Edition is only going to cost $69.99 in the US, something that’s bound to make early Premium adopters angry. You’ve probably already figured out that Battlefield 3 Premium Edition comes with the currently available Back to Karkand and Close Quarters DLC packs (along with the upcoming Armored Kill, End Game, and Aftermath packs), but this edition also comes with a “Multiplayer Head Start Kit.” The kit includes 15 weapons, gadgets, and vehicle upgrades, so new players will be going into multiplayer with a little bit of an edge.

So there you have it, Battlefield 3 Premium Edition is a real thing, and it’s coming next month. Electronic Arts says the game is launching in the UK on September 13, which makes us think that it’ll be releasing in the US on September 11. That’s just a guess though, as we don’t have an official US release date just yet, so keep it tuned to SlashGear for more information!

Minecraft PC version passes 7 million sales

Minecraft‘s popularity just keeps on growing and growing, as Mojang announced today that the PC version of the beloved indie game has passed 7 million sales. Mojang’s Daniel Kaplan announced the milestone today through Twitter, saying “More than 7 million minecraft (pc) copies sold!” Not too bad for a game that was started (and mostly developed) by one person.

This news comes just a couple of weeks after we were told that the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft had sold 3 million copies. That means Minecraft has sold at least 10 million copies across all platforms, but the actual number is probably much higher than that, thanks to the mobile versions of the game. The number for the Xbox 360 edition is likely still climbing fast too, so expect another update on its progress soon.

Though Notch has handed off the main development duties on Minecraft, the game is still getting new stuff added to it on a regular basis, with update 1.3.1 only going live a couple weeks back. Minecraft 1.3.1 came with some pretty big additions, like a new block type and NPC trading, but it also merged single player and multiplayer worlds. Obviously, there are still some big things going on with Minecraft, despite the fact that it officially launched last November.

Mojang’s next game, Scrolls, is currently undergoing closed alpha testing, and Notch has a new passion project called 0x10c in the works. 0x10c will follow Minecraft‘s “launch early, update often” release schedule, so we’re hoping to hear more about that one soon. Be sure to have a look at our story timeline below for more posts on Minecraft!

Steam Community getting ‘major’ update, Game Hubs detailed

Valve has announced that the Steam Community will soon be going through a major change, but like everything Valve does, it’s revealing this “major” update at its own pace. That is to say that Valve will be announcing a new feature every day this week, and today we were introduced to Game Hubs. A Game Hub serves as something as a catch-all for the content related to a game, and every title available on Steam will be getting one.

As you may have figured out by now, Steam lets you do a lot of things with the games you buy. You can take screenshots and record videos, and some games come equipped with support for the Steam Workshop, where you can find and download mods. In additional to all of that, there are also articles from Steam’s gaming site partners, along with comments and discussions from the Steam community. Game Hubs bring all of this content together into one place, so you can see everything the game has to offer easily.

Speaking generally about this incoming update, Valve’s Emily Kent said that this is geared toward giving “the best” user-created content some additional exposure. “The New Steam Community is all about showing off the best content that gamers have created,” she said. “With over 89 million screenshots, videos, Steam Workshop maps, levels, mods, and items, plus news articles and product updates, the community has created an unbelievable wealth of content around their favorite games.”

There’s no ETA for this “New Steam Community,” but Valve says that a beta will be kicking off soon. We’re not sure how to get into this beta quite yet, so for now you’ll need to be satisfied with the knowledge that beta is on the way. Keep an ear to SlashGear, because we’ll have more details about this Steam Community update as Valve releases it.

Assassin’s Creed III PC release date finally announced

Last month, Ubisoft stuck with tradition and announced that the PC version of Assassin’s Creed III had been delayed. At the time, the publisher didn’t give a new release date for the title, only saying that it would be out before Christmas. Now we know when Assassin’s Creed III will be arriving on PC, with Ubisoft giving it a release date of November 20 in North America and November 23 in the UK.

With the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions launching on October 31, this means that PC players will have less than a month to wait before their own version of Assassin’s Creed III is released. That’s a new thing for Ubisoft, as typically it waits more than a month to launch the PC version of any given game. That probably won’t do much to make PC players happy given the fact that delaying its PC games appears to be one of Ubisoft’s favorite things, but hey, at least it’s a start.

Ubisoft still hasn’t explained why it delayed the PC version of Assassin’s Creed III, but that isn’t anything new. Ubisoft often delays these PC games without giving any reason at all, leaving us to guess at the reasoning behind the decision. That isn’t a quality exclusive to Ubisoft either, as many publishers like to do the same exact thing.

So, we’ll probably never know why Assassin’s Creed III was delayed on PC, but at least now we have a solid release date for it. PC delay woes aside, Assassin’s Creed III does look quite cool, as it appears to actually mix things up within the series. After three Assassin’s Creed games featuring Ezio, a shake up was sorely needed in order to keep fans interested, so Ubisoft is definitely on the right track with Assassin’s Creed III. Stay tuned for more information.

Angry Birds Seasons getting a new pink-feathered character

Rovio has introduced a new character for Angry Birds Seasons, a pink-feathered fowl who apparently likes to blow bubbles. This new bird, named simply “Pink Bird,” will be debuting in a new update for the immensely popular game. Alas, we don’t know when the update is scheduled to land, but with Rovio giving the update the title of “Back to School,” it seems it should be arriving before long.

Judging from Rovio’s new animated short below, Pink Bird appears to be a bit more light and dainty than the other birds we’ve used to take down the pigs. She’s shown using bubbles as a weapon, distracting the pigs in the video with with an egg-shaped one, but how these will be used in the game is still unclear. Despite not knowing the Pink Bird’s actual use in the game, we’re sure many fans are simply excited by the prospect of having a new bird in their arsenal.

Angry Birds Seasons: Back to School will be the 13th update for the game, with the first update, Trick or Treat launching way back in October 2010. It’s been an incredibly successful ride for Angry Birds Seasons and the larger Angry Birds franchise, and lately we’ve been seeing Rovio begin to branch out with new games like Amazing Alex. Angry Birds will likely remain Rovio’s main focus for quite some time though, as Angry Birds Space – the latest installment in the series – proved that fans will still eat up anything related to the franchise.

Just like all of the other Angry Birds Seasons updates, we’re expecting that this one will be free when it launches. Aside from the Pink Bird, Back to School will add a variety of new levels, though just how many the update will add is unknown at the moment. Keep an ear to SlashGear, as we’ll be sure to let you know once Rovio spills more details on Angry Birds Seasons: Back to School.
