Pebble Watch SDK Arriving In April 2013

Pebble Watch SDK Arriving In April 2013The Pebble Watch, a so-called smart watch that was supposed to take the world by storm, did not really manage to capture the imagination of the masses, never mind that it has long picked up more than enough dough required to launch on Kickstarter, the crowdfunding site. Having said that, developers will be able to grab hold of a proof-of-concept software developer’s kit (SDK) for the Pebble Watch from as early as the second week of April, according to the company behind this smart timepiece.

The initial release of the SDK is said to be fairly limited, as developers will not be able to gain access to the accelerometer or communication between watchfaces and smartphones. The focus of the company right nw remains on producing and shipping the timepieces, before a more extensive and comprehensive SDK will be able to roll out for developers. With nearly 70,000 Kickstarter backers having thrown their money to get the Pebble Watch when released, there are still 30,000 or so more Pebble Watches that have yet to be manufactured.

Apple Reportedly Developing iOS Smartwatch Featuring Curved Glass

Apple Reportedly Developing iOS Smartwatch Featuring Curved Glass

We hear a lot of Apple rumors on a daily, if not weekly basis, many of which never turn into a real product or feature for an upcoming product. This weekend, though, one rumor we covered this past December seems to have resurfaced as two big publications reporting Apple is currently working on a smartwatch.

Both the New York Times and Wall Street Journal have confirmed with sources familiar with Apple’s plans they have begun developing a smartwatch that runs on iOS. The smartwatch is said to be made of a curved glass and Apple is currently experimenting a number of ways consumers would wear the device, although at this point, no details regarding the smartwatch’s design or even if it will be made available to the public in the near future.

It’s curious to see Apple start developing its own smartwatch shortly after Pebble announced its own smartwatch, which recently started shipping out to consumers. The Pebble hasn’t been out long enough for analysts to predict whether the device is a hit or miss, but if Apple is indeed developing a smartwatch, then they must see something in the technology.

Pebble Watch Begins To Ship

pebble ships Pebble Watch Begins To ShipAt long last, the Pebble watch that the world has been waiting for all this while, has begun to ship. This e-paper watch that will play nice with iOS- and Android-powered devices would soon see the first batch of its production units wrapped around the wrists of those who are interested. The Pebble watch started off as a Kickstarter project, and along the way, amassed a whopping $10 million plus amount in funding from the interested public, now how about that?

Sure, the Pebble watch did miss its previous shipping targets that included September 2012, citing manufacturing issues amidst other “excuses” for the delay, but it is a good thing that the folks behind the Pebble watch decided to use that extra time to throw in even more functionality. Whoever said that good things do not come to those who wait? Are you one of the first few backers of the Pebble watch? If so, you should be able to see it arrive at your doorstep in no time at all.

Pebble team posts UI preview, provides an early look at how you’ll interact with the E-Paper Watch

Pebble team posts UI preview, provides an early look at how you'll interact with the EPaper Watch

Sadly, Pebble won’t be making its way to backers by its original September estimate, but the design team wants you to know that it’s hard at work, traveling the world to source components, running shipping tests and spending time refining the user interface in order to provide a top-notch experience once you do receive your device in the mail. To that end, Martijn, the UI designer, has dropped by Vimeo to provide us with a “sneak peek” at the device’s operation, including some demos on iOS and a connected prototyping board, using a custom tool that sends designs to the Pebble screen from any graphics program in real-time (a feature that will reportedly also be available in the SDK). From what we’ve seen, there appears to be plenty of space on the screen to show incoming calls, read emails with eight lines of text at a time, view appointment details, select songs and control volume, and, of course, see the current time. Commenters seem to be quite pleased with the design so far, and we have to agree — it’s a pretty slick UI. Jump past the break to see it in action.

Pebble smartwatch will miss September shipping date, blames darn popularity

Pebble smartwatch will miss September shipping date, blames darn popularity

The latest update sent to Pebble‘s Kickstarter backers (and a few Engadget editors) is a double-edged one. After announcing that the smartwatch will be available in a new orange edition, the makers admitted that the crowd-funded wrist candy won’t be shipping to its backers on schedule in September. No new date has been disclosed just yet, but the delay was attributed to the project having to abandon early plans of making just 1,000 smartwatches. The level of production has now ballooned, meaning the factories involved are aiming to hit 15,000 Pebbles per week “as soon as possible.”

Pebble smartwatch outs SDK preview at Google I/O, gives developers a kickstart on apps

pebble-smartwatch-sdk-preview-google-i-o

If you invested in the Pebble e-paper smartwatch — and who didn’t? — you’ll be happy to hear that the firm has unleashed a preview of the Kickstarter darling’s SDK at Google I/O this week. That’ll give developers a head start on creating apps for the ARM-powered e-paper device, allowing them to learn exactly how it receives data from Mountain View’s robot OS. The company said the new kit supports multiple program languages to boot, allowing developers of all skill levels to create Pebble-enabled apps. The document is still a work in progress, of course, but advances like this should help keep it from getting trampled by the cavalcade of smart wrist devices now coming out. Check the source link if you want to grab it.
