FiftyThree launches Pencil Bluetooth stylus for its sketching app

Remember when we spotted that FiftyThree, makers of the iPad sketching app Paper, was working on a stylus? Now it’s time for Paper to meet Pencil. Looking like an enormous marker pencil, the unit comes in a choice of sustainable hardwood or brushed aluminum, jam-packed with technology inside. Innovations include palm rejection, an eraser-end to remove your digital mistakes and a rechargeable battery that promises a month of life with normal use. Pairing to your iPad over Bluetooth, you’ll also get access to various paid-for tools like Outline, Mixer and Sketch for free. Griffin announces SeeSaw and No. 2 Pencil Stylus

When it comes to peripherals for your tablet, you will definitely be able to figure out that Griffin Technology is a name that you should take notice of, considering how they have managed to position themselves to be one of the world’s foremost creators of innovations for everyday life, with the recent announcement of the SeeSaw for iPad, as well as No. 2 Pencil Stylus for touchscreens, where these two gadgets are ideal for use in situations such as classrooms, labs or study groups.

Just what is the SeeSaw? Well, this is a lightweight, portable case that comes with a built-in carrying handle. It will be able to transform a user’s iPad into a personal or group tabletop workstation, making it balance in a steady and stable manner, which is more than ideal for viewing, tapping and typing. Not only that, with the SeeSaw, it makes things incredibly easy to hold, carry and use. As a user, you are able to quickly switch between portrait and landscape orientation, as you retain full accessibility to ports, cameras, speakers and controls. Not only that, the SeeSaw is also made out of nonporous material, which is a snap to remain clean without much effort.

As for Griffin’s No. 2 Pencil Stylus, this particular tablet accessory will help modernize the most iconic writing instrument of all time, which incidentally is the No. 2 pencil. The No.2 Pencil Stylus will be a stylus which will play nice with just about all capacitive touchscreens. Sporting a high-sensitivity rubber tip, it has been designed to mimic a finger without having to leave behind fingerprints or smudges. It is definitely a faithful reproduction of the classic yellow pencil, Griffin’s No. 2 Pencil Stylus will come with a satisfying shape, length and weight which delivers a special kind of writing feel that cannot be found in shorter, lighter styluses.

The SeeSaw will be compatible with iPad generations 2, 3 & 4, where it comes in pool blue or citron for $34.99 a pop, and the No. 2 Pencil Stylus is available for $19.99 if you want one.

Sprout Pencil Sprouts Herbs and Veggies from the Stubby End

Whoever invented pencils didn’t really think things through. Everything’s all good at the start, but what happens when the pencil gets too short and stubby that you can’t really use it to write comfortably?

That’s where the folks behind the Sprout Pencil come in.

Sprout

You see, the Sprout is no ordinary pencil. Embedded on the end where the eraser is supposed to be is a seed capsule instead. So when the pencil gets too short for comfort, you can just stick the stub into a pot of soil or compost and water it to grow your own little plant.

The Sprouts come in many different varieties, including some of your favorite herbs and vegetables. You can leave the pencil in the soil to serve as a planting marker or you can throw it out if you want to.

Sprout1

Sprout was launched on Kickstarter last September. It exceeded the funding goal that was set and is currently in production. If you missed it then, don’t worry, because the team behind it are getting ready to offer Sprout for sale online and in stores.

This Picture Is Actually a Drawing

I know it’s hard to believe but the picture you see above? It’s not a photograph. It’s actually a drawing by amazing artist Diego Fazio. Like he drew this super realistic picture with a real pencil. It’s stunning. More »

Saving Shavings for the Sake of Art

Different pencil sharpeners result in differently-shaped and textured pencil shavings. For example, the ones that come with a handle churn out thin, coil-like shavings (which I packed into tiny bags and used as instant noodle props for my Barbie dolls when I was a kid.)

Then there’s the handier, compact sharpener that produces the kind of shavings that Marta Altes uses in her art.

The caricatures are playful, fun, and obviously creative. I wonder why nobody thought of doing this before, but then again, pencil shavings don’t really seem very appealing as an art medium at first thought.

Aside from the rad guy with the shaving mohawk, check out the rest of series featuring a lion, a ballerina, and a cool surfer dude all penciled in with shavings completing the scene.

Awesome LiteOn Concept Turns Scrap Paper into Pencils

There’s not much you can do with paper after you’ve written (or printed) both sides of it. You could use it to wrap stuff up you intend to store or throw away, but that’s about it. But if the LiteOn pencil maker ever gets made, then you can actually use it to make pencils.

It’s a concept that winds up the otherwise useless paper so tight that it forms the body of a pencil. Just feed spare paper it into the machine, wait a while, and voila! You’ve got a brand-spankin’ new customized pencil, ready for you to use.

Of course, the lead will be brand new, but I think that’s a pretty easy material to source and feed into the machine. Though there’s no plan for how to add an eraser to the pencils it cranks out.

The LiteOn pencil maker was designed by Chengzhu Ruan, Yuanyuan Liu, Xinwei Yuan and Chao Chen, and is only a concept at this point.
