ASUS’ new PadFone Infinity unveiled with Snapdragon 800, microSD slot and design tweaks

ASUS' new PadFone Infinity unveiled with Snapdragon 800, microSD slot and design tweaks

Just as promised, today ASUS has made its new PadFone Infinity official in Taipei, and there are definitely no surprises in the specs. The main update here is obviously the 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 SoC, along with the addition of a microSD slot plus a secondary microphone for noise cancellation. Unsurprisingly, the internal storage options have been lowered to 16GB and 32GB, which is understandable with that new storage expansion capability.

One very subtle change that we missed in the leaks is the new diamond cut on the metallic backside, which gives the phone a more premium and solid look than the original version. To accompany that, the new PadFone Infinity comes in two new color options: “Titanium Black” and “Platinum White.”

The software has also been given a gentle facelift, courtesy of a more consistent design language throughout the system — from the simplified icons to the UI of some of the built-in Android apps. Since this is based on Android 4.2 instead of 4.1 out of the box, we should also see some performance boost as well. The good news for existing users is that the original PadFone Infinity will also receive this update, but there’s no time frame for the roll-out just yet. %Gallery-slideshow84453%

Fairphone Is First Fair Trade Smartphone In The World

Fairphone Is First Fair Trade Smartphone In The WorldAll right, so I have seen fair trade clothes as well as fair trade coffee, but a fair trade smartphone? Somehow, that particular idea does take some amount of time to sink in, and it seems that the world’s first fair-trade smartphone has been aptly called the Fairphone. Just what the heck is the Fairphone, and why does it deserve such recognition? Touted to be the most ethically sourced device on the market, the Fairphone smartphone happens to be the product of the company’s campaign for fair wages as well as working conditions for those who happen to earn a living by being part of the supply chain for smartphone manufacturers.

According to product manager Miquel Ballester, “The whole point of the Fairphone social enterprise and the campaign that came before it is to intervene on the ground where the problems have originated. It’s only as a manufacturer that you’re playing by the same rules as the big brands. Then you can have real impact.”

So far, some smartphone manufacturers, Apple and Samsung included, have been pointed out for rumored links to conflict zone sources when it comes to their smartphone supply chains. The Fairphone itself is made from tin and tantlum, where the materials have been extracted from conflict-free mines in South Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Ballester did explain the situation further, touting that the Fairphone is not 100% fair trade, but rather, it is “about creating a business environment that favours ethical treatment from the outset.” Hardware specifications of the Fairphone include a 4.3” display, a dual SIM card slot, and a version of Android. Available this December, the Fairphone will cost you £272 a pop, and so far, nearly 15,000 Fairphones have been pre-ordered.

Gold-colored HTC One part leaked in China, we’re sensing a trend here

Goldcolored HTC One part leaked in China, we're sensing a trend here

We’re usually quite skeptical when it comes to leaked phone parts, especially those that just show a new color, but this one seems fairly reliable. Courtesy of the same Sina Weibo user who previously showed us a blue HTC One (which has since been announced along with its mini counterpart), we’re now looking at what appears to be the front-half of a gold-colored One. Call it impeccable timing, but given the August 12th date stamp on the part, chances are HTC also had this planned some time ago. In fact, a 24-Carat gold One already exists.

In addition to the leakster’s track record, the hand-written marks on the parts lend credence to their authenticity. The One series’ designer Justin Huang (who’s sadly in a bit of trouble right now) previously told us that the letters grade the form of the front-side frame, in order to help pick matching parts. It’s also worth pointing out that we’ve yet to come across any fake custom HTC One parts in the Huaqiangbei market, which is likely because of the difficult manufacturing and disassembly process. That said, the phone’s relatively lower demand than, say, the iPhones and Samsung devices may be a bigger deterrent for those part makers. Let’s see if this new color option will change HTC’s course.

Surprise! ASUS to launch ‘the new PadFone Infinity’ next Tuesday (updated with video)

Surprise! ASUS to launch 'the new PadFone Infinity' next Tuesday updated video

Given the recent leaks, it’s no surprise that ASUS is now readying the launch of its aptly named “the new PadFone Infinity.” According to an invitation we just received, CEO Jerry Shen will be hosting an event for said device in Taipei next Tuesday, so we’ll be there to get our hands dirty. For now, all we know is that this phone + tablet combo will look pretty much identical to the current model, except it’ll likely get a more powerful Snapdragon 800 SoC inside, as well as a microSD slot and an all-white color option. Stay tuned for our coverage!

Update: ASUS has just added a short, cheeky video (after the break) showing the smartphone leaving the orbit of its tablet companion. A countdown page has also appeared showing the six or so days left until the new new PadFone’s “launch” on September 17th — you can find it at the source.

Amazon: We Won't Launch a Phone in 2013 and It Won't Be Free, Either

Late last week, Wall Street Journal vets Jessica Lessin and Amir Efrati claimed that an Amazon phone launch was imminent, and that the handset would be free. Amazon has responded to those claims, stating that neither is true.

Lenovo Vibe X stuffs 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core chip into slim and light body

Lenovo Vibe X stuffs 5inch 1080p display, quadcore chip into slim and light body

While Lenovo’s Snapdragon 800-powered phone has yet to make an official appearance, the Chinese company’s gone ahead and unveiled its other quad-core flagship device: the Vibe X aka IdeaPhone S960. Much like most of its recent siblings, this Android 4.2 slate is powered by a MediaTek SoC — the quad-core 1.5GHz MT6589T, specifically, with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage. There’s also a 5-inch 1080p IPS display and a 2,000mAh internal battery, along with a 5-megapixel, 84-degree front-facing camera plus a 13-megapixel main imager on the back. As you’d expect, the camera app will come with face enhancement features for your bad skin days, and Lenovo also teases a “full-featured” photo app that lets you organize your photos (with tags and folders), as well as making puzzles with them.

Thanks to Gorilla Glass 3 and the “premium polycarbonate body” (with “fabric-like surface” and side chrome accents), the overall package weighs 121g only and is just 6.9mm thick — the same thickness as the slightly larger but metallic, Intel-powered K900. Also, while the Vivo X3 with the same MediaTek chip and battery capacity is way thinner at 5.75mm (sorry, Huawei!), do bear in mind that its 5-inch display only has a 720p resolution.

There’s no price nor a date just yet, but as with most Lenovo phones these days, we’ve been told that the Vibe X will not be entering either Europe or the US. As the Chinese saying goes: you can quench thirst by thinking of the plums. By “plums” we mean the press release and our first impressions after the break. %Gallery-slideshow79651% %Gallery-slideshow79657%

Xiaomi Phone 3 makes early appearance on online store ahead of launch

    Image

As this author was fiddling with his Xiaomi Phone 2S (or MI2S) in bed ahead of Xiaomi’s big event tomorrow, he spotted something odd: a thumbnail of an unfamiliar device — next to the entry-level Red Rice aka Hongmi — in the company’s online store app. Since it’s a high-resolution image, we’re able to zoom into our screenshot (full version after the break) to see this Lumia-like design but with a flatter back. The long flash strip also suggests that this could be a beefed-up dual-LED flash module. Other than that, there’s not much else that we can pick up here.

Given the clock on this mysterious phone matches the 2pm start time of tomorrow’s event, we’re pretty certain that this is Xiaomi’s third-gen flagship device, the MI3; and it’ll likely be announced alongside the Xiaomi TV. We also recall seeing the same back cover leaked way back in February, and the side-by-side shot with the MI2 (embedded after the break) is pointing to a 5-inch screen for this new phone. Judging by the pattern so far, we bet it’ll use Qualcomm’s beastly Snapdragon 800 SoC to follow the 600 on the MI2S. Ultimately, it’ll be all about the price, which is likely to be no more than CN¥1,999 or about US$330 off contract.

While the above product thumbnail appears to be stuck in the cache on our MI2S, the same spot is occupied by the proper MI2S image in the same app on our MI2A. Talk about perfect timing, eh? Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have some sleep to catch up on — we don’t want to scare Hugo Barra with our panda eyes.

How the NSA Misleads the Public Without Technically Lying

How the NSA Misleads the Public Without Technically Lying

The Wall Street Journal published an important investigation last week, reporting that the National Security Agency (NSA) has direct access to many key telecommunications switches around the country and “has the capacity to reach roughly 75% of all U.S. Internet traffic in the hunt for foreign intelligence, including a wide array of communications by foreigners and Americans.” Notably, NSA officials repeatedly refused to talk about this story on theirconference call with reporters the next day. Instead the Director of National Intelligence and the NSA released a statement about the story later that evening.

Meizu MX3 unveiled with Exynos 5 Octa, 5.1-inch screen, Wolfson audio and 128GB option

Meizu MX3 unveiled with Exynos 5 Octa, 51inch screen, Wolfson audio and 128GB option

Ahead of main rival Xiaomi’s big event later this week, Meizu has today unveiled its latest Android device, the MX3, at the Beijing National Aquatics Center. Like many recent flagship phones, this one finally breaks the previous 4.4-inch barrier to make way for a 5.1-inch display, though with an odd 1,800 x 1,080, 15:9 panel from Sharp and JDI to follow Meizu’s string of odd aspect ratios. At the same time, the manufacturer has managed to keep the screen bezel at 2.9mm thick, making the carefully curved body 72mm wide (as well as 9.1mm thick and 143g heavy). This is apparently the result of Jack Wong’s 30-plus handcrafted wooden prototypes, followed by some 3D scanning. Read on for more.

ASUS PadFone Infinity with Snapdragon 800 could simply be ‘The new PadFone Infinity’

ASUS' Snapdragon 800 refresh of the PadFone Infinity could simply be 'The new PadFone Infinity'

Following the original ASUS PadFone Infinity (A80) with Snapdragon 600 SoC, rumors of a new “PadFone Infinity A86” (or “PadFone T004”) go as far back as July 20th, with benchmark evidence showing a more powerful Snapdragon 800 enabling this mysterious device. While details are still light, several eagle-eyed PadFone fans have started noticing a new name on ASUS’ tech support page: “The new PadFone Infinity.” Assuming this is more of an official name and less of a placeholder, it looks like we’ll be seeing an identical-looking device sporting Qualcomm’s latest piece of silicon; and perhaps a launch is imminent — maybe at IFA next week? But ASUS, it really wouldn’t hurt if you guys can throw in a microSD slot plus a dedicated keyboard dock as well this time. Remember the original PadFone? Good times.
