Foxconn and Mozilla join hands over Firefox OS, may show off new devices next week

In a Chinese invitation we received earlier today, Foxconn Technology Group and Mozilla confirmed an upcoming press conference that will detail and make their Firefox OS partnership official. The event will take place in Taipei next Monday (just a few days before Computex truly kicks off), and it’ll see Mozilla welcome the 19th partner to its Firefox OS alliance. There isn’t much meat in the email, though we did spot a little hint in the rundown that says one or more of the “latest” Firefox OS products will be on show. Whatever they may be, we shall keep an eye out for them as soon as we land in Terry Gou’s back garden next week.

Samsung teases new Galaxy and ATIV devices for upcoming London event

On this quiet Monday, Samsung decided to do a little teaser for its upcoming “Premiere 2013” roadshow event in London on June 20th. The above poster only mentions “Galaxy & ATIV,” which suggest the event will mainly feature Android and Windows-based devices. The remaining tiles show partial shots of three mysterious devices — possibly a tablet or phone, a convertible laptop (à la Sony VAIO Duo 11) and a camera (maybe the rumored Galaxy S 4 Zoom?). Obviously, we’ll be at the event to solve this mystery, so stay tuned for more.

Spot satellite-powered Global Phone keeps adventurers connected for $499

Spot satellitepowered Global Phone keeps adventurers connected worldwide for $499

Sick of that spotty (read: non-existent) cell coverage 1,000 miles off the coast of Alaska? This time, you can’t blame AT&T. There is an option for getting connected, though, and it’s not quite as pricey as you think. Spot, a subsidiary of satellite communications giant Globalstar, recently announced its new Global Phone, a fairly basic lightweight handset that supports phone calls, SMS and compressed data at speeds of up to 28 kbps for $499. Usage fees are also fairly reasonable, with plans ranging from 10 minutes per month for $25 to unlimited calling for $150, plus a $50 activation fee. There’s also an 80-minute plan for $40, 200 minutes for $65 or 400 minutes for $100 with monthly billing. The device itself sports four hours of talk time or 36 hours of standby, and provides direct access to GEOS International Emergency Response Coordination Center when you dial 911. The Global Phone is available now through a variety of retailers, including Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s and REI.

China’s MeituKiss phone boasts dual 8MP cameras, wants to be a girl’s best friend

MeituKiss

Today we have a message for Oppo, Zopo, Vivo and Spice: 5-megapixel front-facing cameras are so yesterday for phones. Launched by Meitu, the developer behind the popular Chinese camera app Meitu Xiuxiu, the MeituKiss phone challenges the aforementioned brands with not one but two 8-megapixel f/2.2 cameras — one on each side of the phone. The company makes it rather obvious that this Android 4.2 device — available in pink or white — is solely targeted at ladies, who in the Far East have a habit of taking self-portrait shots on the regular. So naturally, the MeituKiss does face beautification as well.

For CN¥2,199 or about $360, the rest of the specs aren’t too shabby, either. The 9.3mm-thick phone comes with a 4.5-inch, 720p gapless IPS display, a 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6589 SoC, a removable 1,800mAh battery, 8GB of built-in storage and microSD expansion. As for radios, you get the usual WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth 4.0, but there’s only WCDMA 2100 for 3G. We’re just as baffled by the fact that the MeituKiss can only capture video at up to 720p only, especially since each of the Sony sensors here has its own Fujitsu ISP. Regardless, pre-order starts today for the first lot of 18,888 units, followed by a full launch on June 6th should you miss the first round.

ASUS Fonepad gets a spec boost: 1.6GHz Intel processor, 32GB storage

ASUS Fonepad gets a spec boost in Taiwan Intel Atom Z2460, 32GB storage

ASUS’ Fonepad has been making its way around the world with a 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2420 processor and 16GB of built-in storage, but apparently there’s a need for covering one’s face with a beefier version. Announced in Taiwan earlier today, the 7-inch tabletphone will be offered with a faster 1.6GHz Z2460 plus 32GB of memory (with microSD expansion as before). This new model will retail for NT$10,900 locally, which works out to be about US$360; whereas the original model will still be available for NT$8,990 or about US$300 (which is, by the way, a tad more expensive than the UK price). We’ll let you know when ASUS comes back with more information regarding availability in other regions.

Zopo C2 phone with Aliyun OS hands-on (video)

Zopo C2 with Aliyun OS handson

We were rather surprised by Zopo’s C2 (aka Xiaohei) when it was announced last month, and fortunately, it didn’t disappoint us when we spotted the real thing at GMIC Beijing. For those who are just catching up, this Aliyun OS 2.0 phone packs some surprisingly good specs for its ¥1,399 ($230) price tag: a 5-inch 1080p LTPS display, a 13-megapixel main camera, a 5-megapixel front imager, a removable 2,000mAh battery and dual WCDMA 850/2100 SIM slots — one for a standard SIM and one for a micro-SIM.

During our brief hands-on, the software ran well on top of the 1.2GHz quad-core MT6589 SoC with 1GB RAM, though the built-in 4GB storage will definitely need some microSD love, as we kept seeing a warning message about low storage space. Industrial design-wise, the C2 is quite well-built, and while it’s not the most exciting-looking phone in the world, we’re just glad that Zopo is finally no longer ripping off designs from the likes of Samsung, HTC and LG. Hands-on video after the break.

New Huawei P6-U06 spy shots show off black, brushed metallic body (updated)

Huawei's P6U06 gets another round of spy shots, this time

Quite frankly, Huawei’s 6.18mm-thick P6-U06 is quickly becoming the company’s worst leak in this half of 2013. Following yesterday’s spy shots of said phone in black, today we received three new ones courtesy of an anonymous tipster, and this time we have a close-up of the brushed metallic back of the phone. Interestingly, the camera looks different than the one — what appears to be a dual-SIM model — in the TENAA filing, and we also noticed that the volume rocker is on the left side of the phone this time, while the headphone jack is now located at the top left side instead of at the bottom left. The overall shape of the device matches what we’ve seen before, though.

On a related note, we’ve also been notified of an upcoming Huawei launch event in London on June 18th (Huawei Device chairman Richard Yu told us he’s attending), and we wouldn’t be surprised to see this slim phone popping up there — hopefully alongside the mysterious Edge that was leaked in March. Two more shots of the P6-U06 after the break.

Update: Meixcan blog Circular got hold of a couple of photos — embedded after the break — of the P6-U06 lit up. One of the shots reveal that the phone features a 1.5GHz quad-core chip, 2GB RAM and 8GB of storage space, along with Emotion UI 1.6 running on top of Android. We’re not sure if the “No SD card found” message is an indication of microSD expansion, though.

Jolla’s Marc Dillon teases world’s first Sailfish device, confirms launch in a couple of weeks

Jolla's Marc Dillon teases

So the rumor is true: the world’s first Jolla Sailfish device will be launching this month. In fact, Marc Dillon, the ex-CEO and now Head of Software Development at Jolla, was kind enough to flash the back of the product at the GMIC Beijing conference earlier today — mainly to emphasize his love for the booming Chinese market. It was very brief — no more than two seconds — but the orange device appeared to be no smaller than five inches in screen size. Dillon only added that the official launch is “coming in a couple of weeks,” so we’ll be keeping an eye out for an invitation in our mailbox.

Vivo Xplay boasts 5.7-inch 1080p screen, dedicated audio chips and nifty single-hand mode (video)

Vivo Xplay boasts 57inch 1080p screen, dedicated audio chips and nifty singlehand mode

Another 1080p quad-core Android phone, you say? Well, there’s a bit more to it. Launched by BBK spin-off Vivo in Beijing just now, this 5.7-inch Xplay goes one step further than its smaller X1 and X1S cousins by packing one extra audio chip and the OPA2604 operational amplifier from Texas Instruments in order to add extra oomph to Cirrus Logic’s CS4398 DAC and CS8422 stereo asynchronous sample-rate converter — both of which are featured on the X1 series. If you’re a DIY audio enthusiast, you might have already tinkered with an OPA2604 while making your own headphone amplifier; so in other words, Vivo is trying to save you the hassle.

Before we dive into the audio performance, let’s quickly look at the rest of the phone first. Underneath the 500-nit LTPS display lies a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core SoC (1.7GHz, 2GB RAM and Adreno 320 graphics engine), 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage, 3,400mAh battery and NFC. On the back you’ll find a Sony 13-megapixel imager next to a pair of speakers (FLAC playback is supported natively), but flip the phone over and you’ll be looking at a surprisingly generous 5-megapixel front-facing camera — much like the one on Oppo’s mid-range Ulike 2. Vivo’s somehow managed to pack all of this into a 7.99mm-thick body with a screen bezel of just 2.3mm thick (which bests Pantech’s thin-bezeled Vega Iron) and a large viewable-to-total area ratio of 75.11 percent. Alas, for 3G there’s only WCDMA 2100, meaning the phone may have to rely more on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 or WiFi in many parts of the world. More after the break.

Update: Hands-on photos added below, followed by a couple of video clips after the break.

Lenovo P780 teased by Kobe Bryant, boasts a 5-inch display with 4,000mAh battery (video)

Lenovo's P780 teased by Kobe Bryant, packs a 5inch display with 4,000mAh battery

Lenovo sure likes to tease, and apparently so does Kobe Bryant. In a recent “behind the scenes” video of Lenovo’s upcoming P780 ad campaign, the NBA star is seen bouncing a basketball around for a while before he eventually starts talking. “Are you prepared for a new style smartphone? Say hello to the Lenovo…”

At that point, the video — embedded after the break — awkwardly fades into a still showing Kobe holding the P780, and that’s all there. Luckily, more details of this WCDMA device have been trickling out of Sina Weibo since then. Most notably, a few official Lenovo accounts mentioned a 5-inch display (our money’s on 720p resolution) and a generous 4,000mAh battery, thus making the P780 a natural progression from the 4.5-inch P770 that came with a 3,500mAh cell. MyDrivers’ source also tipped a 9.9mm thickness, along with the presence of “super sensitive touch” technology — as featured on Nokia’s Lumia 820 and Lumia 920, plus Huawei’s Ascend Mate and Ascend P2 — that supports glove and non-capacitive stylus input.

Having gotten up close and personal with a working P780 (photos after the break), Sina Weibo user Lisancha added that said phone features dual-SIM with dual-standby, a quad-core MediaTek chipset (likely the Cortex-A7-based MT6589) and a launch date set for the second-half of May. We’re assuming that like many other Lenovo phones, this one may only be made available in China; but we’ll be keeping an eye out for its official launch, anyway.
