Sony A99 Bundle Announced, Comes With Free Flash Unit And Vertical Grip

Sony A99 Bundle Announced, Comes With Free Flash Unit And Vertical GripWe’re sure that many professional or enthusiast photographers out there would love to get their hands on a full frame DSLR camera, such as the Sony A99. While the A99 might be somewhat affordable by itself, getting additional accessories such as an external flash unit and a vertical camera grip with additional batteries might be a luxury some cannot afford. Well the good news is that if you were looking for a full frame DSLR, perhaps Sony’s A99 might be it as Sony US has launched a deal for the A99.

Basically for the price of the A99 (body only), Sony US is giving away a free vertical camera grip and an external flash unit with a total value of $930. As for the camera itself, in case you haven’t been following the prices lately, the Sony A99 will cost you $2,799.99. Granted it’s a hefty price tag, but if you were planning on making the transition into full frame and want to get all the trimmings, this deal might be it. At the moment online retailer Samys is offering the bundle deal, while Amazon’s page has yet to be updated to reflect the new deal. So, any takers?

Cameras With WiFi Connectivity Could Be Hacked And Turned Into Spy CamsOne of the newer features that camera manufacturers have started to introduce to many of their cameras is built-in WiFi. What this means is that it allows photographers to transfer photos from the camera to another device, like a tablet, smartphone or computer, wirelessly, eliminating the need for additional cables. While it sounds like a convenient feature, it has been discovered at the hacker confere, Shmoocon 2013, that this WiFi feature might not be as safe as you think. (more…)

Alleged Canon EOS 7D MK II Test Camera Specs Revealed

Alleged Canon EOS 7D MK II Test Camera Specs RevealedThe Canon EOS 7D MK II is expected to be announced sometime in the future, when exactly remains unknown. However for those looking forward to hearing more about the successor to the EOS 7D, the folks at Northlight have managed to get their hands on what seems like alleged specifications of said camera. Keep in mind that these are alleged specs and might not necessarily be the real thing, so approaching it with a hint of skepticism will probably go a long way preventing yourself from being disappointed.

So what are we looking at here? Well if the specs are right, the EOS 7D MK II will feature a 21MP APS-C sensor, an ISO range from 100-25,000, 10fps shooting, Full HD video capture with manual control, a single CF card slot, 19 AF points, phase detection for liveview and AF tracking, a 100% viewfinder, a 3.2” LCD display, GPS and WiFi connectivity and an alloy body with better weather sealing compared to the EOS 7D. These are somewhat believable specs but like we said, we cannot confirm them at the moment. However for those looking forward to the EOS 7D MK II, what do you guys think?

The ThrowBack App Is An Interesting Way To Recall Photos And Memories

The ThrowBack App Is An Interesting Way To Recall Photos And MemoriesPhotos are a great way to remember the good times that we had with friends and family, and have you ever noticed that while combing through old photos on Facebook or your computer that you are overwhelmed with a sense of nostalgia? If you love that feeling and want to relive it on a random or perhaps specified time basis, an app called ThrowBack might be just what the doctor ordered. Designed from ground up by programmer Calli Higgins, ThrowBack is an app that snaps photos and instead of storing the photos on your phone, it instead uploads the photos onto a server.

From there, users can choose to have the photos emailed to them at random, or at a specified time ranging between one month to five years in the future, ultimately increasing the sentimental value of the photos. According to Higgins, she got the idea for the app after her stepbrother died in a car accident, and while sitting in her apartment, she came across an old camera with an undeveloped roll of film in it which contained photos from a family vacation with her stepbrother in there. Looking at those old photos overwhelmed her, but the rush of feelings and memory allowed her to be transported back in time.

It’s an interesting concept and if you’d like to try it for yourself, the app is free for download via the iTunes App Store.

The Sun & Cloud Camera Needs No Batteries, Operates By Cranking It Manually

The Sun & Cloud Camera Needs No Batteries, Operates By Cranking It ManuallyThe problem with cameras is that they rely on batteries, meaning that if you don’t charge it, or bring a spare battery, you might find yourself in the unfortunate situation of having your camera die on you in the middle of the day. If you’d like to prevent that from happening, would a camera without batteries be of interest to you? While it might not necessarily be the most practical or take the best photos, the Sun & Cloud camera does have a degree of novelty value, thanks to its shape and the fact that you have to crank the mechanism by hand in order to power it.

The camera comes with a 3MP sensor and allows users to apply a variety of filters to it. It can also be charged via USB for those lazy to crank it themselves. Like we said, we doubt it will take the best photos but if you’re into lomography, basically non-conventional styles of taking photos, perhaps the Sun & Cloud camera might be worth taking a look at. It is priced at $199 and is available for purchase via AC Gears.

Camera Found Drifting At Sea Reunited With Owner After 6 YearsWe all know that sinking feeling when we drop our phones, tablets, cameras and whatnot, but we can’t imagine what it would be like to lose a camera in the ocean. However that’s what Lindsay Scallan did when she took her Canon PowerShot camera with her on her underwater dive off Hawaii. She attempted to look for the camera the next day, but unfortunately due to the rough seas she was unable to do so and promptly wrote it off as a loss. However it seems that the camera managed to stay afloat thanks to its waterproof housing, and drafted thousands of miles to Taiwan where it was picked up by an employee of China Airlines.

Surprisingly the memory card in the camera was intact and they managed to retrieve the photos and ultimately were able to identify its owner, Lindsay Scallan. The airline company then approach Hawaii News Now to see if they were able to get in touch with Scallan, and a friend who saw the news told her about it. The good folks at the airline company offered to fly her down to reunite her with her camera, although we expect that this is probably good PR for them as well. However as it turns out, Scallan has work commitments that she is unable to get out of, but still a pretty good story anyway, plus we have to say that the waterproof housing she used certainly lived up to its promise!

Sony To Make Announcement On 3rd April? [Rumor]

Sony To Make Announcement On 3rd April? [Rumor]We’ve been hearing a lot of rumors regarding Sony cameras, such as the rumored NEX-7n as well as the alleged NEX-9, a full-frame NEX camera. While either of those devices have yet to be officially announced or even acknowledged by Sony, the folks at Sony Alpha Rumors have received a tip from a source that come 3rd of April, Sony could be making an announcement, although it is unclear as to what it could be about. Since the Las Vegas NAB show is taking place on the 8th of April, it wouldn’t be completely out of the question if Sony were to make announcements prior to the event. After all companies have done that before, so why would Sony be the exception?

Once again we are not sure what will be announced, or if there even will be an announcement, but if earlier rumors of the NEX-7n’s announcement being postponed are true, you can scratch one device off that list. Either way we will keep our eyes peeled, so check back with us on the 3rd of April to see if there is any news to share.

Fujifilm FinePix S8400W Camera Announced

Fujifilm FinePix S8400W Camera AnnouncedIf the likes of regular digital compact cameras aren’t able to meet your demands as a professional photographer, or maybe if you consider yourself a “prosumer”, perhaps Fujifilm’s recently announced FinePix S8400W could be of great interest to you. As you can see in the image above, this is not your typical compact camera, and it actually comes with a host of functions that an enthusiast might be able to appreciate. The camera will come with a ½.3” 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor and according to Fujifilm, the camera will be able to lock onto a subject via autofocus in 0.3 seconds, although they do note that this is assuming ideal conditions.

The S8400W will also come with a Fujinon super zoom lens (24mm wide-angle) with aperture ranging from f/2.9 to f/6.5. Fujifilm is also boasting about the speed of the S8400W, claiming that it will be able to start up in 1 second, have a shooting interval of 0.5 seconds, and a continuous shooting rate of 10fps. Other features of the camera includes Full HD movie capture, a 3” LCD display, an electronic viewfinder (201k dot), macro mode up to 0.39”, manual exposure controls for those who don’t trust auto mode, and WiFi capabilities, similar to Fujifilm’s earlier announced XP200 camera. This feature will allow users to transfer photos wirelessly to devices such as smartphones or tablets, and there will also be an accompanying app for iOS and Android devices.

Priced at $349.95, the Fujifilm FinePix S8400W will be available come May 2013.

Rugged Fujifilm XP200 Digital Camera Announced

Rugged Fujifilm XP200 Digital Camera AnnouncedWhile our smartphones are more than capable of snapping some beautiful and properly rendered photographs, one of the drawbacks is that our phones aren’t very durable. When dropped it can sometimes lead to the case cracking, or worse still, the display itself. So if you’re in the market for a rugged camera that will be able to withstand a couple of drops, knocks, bumps and maybe a dip in the way, Fujifilm has announced the FinePix XP200 camera. This is a camera that will be part of Fujifilms’ XP series of rugged cameras and will be shockproof from heights of 6.6 feet, freezeproof down to temperatures of -14F, dustproof and waterproof up to depths of 50 feet.

Apart from that, the XP200 will also sport a 16MP SMOS sensor and a 5x Fujinon lens (28mm-140mm) that according to Fujifilm, will be able to double its zoom range up to 10x while maintaining the quality of the photo. Somewhat bold claims but we guess we would have to test it for ourselves to see if it actually does as advertised. Other features include video capture at 1080p Full HD quality, a 3” LCD display, motion panorama, and even comes with WiFi capabilities, allowing you to transfer photos from the camera to a device like a smartphone or tablet (there will be an accompanying app for iOS and Android devices). Available in May 2013, it will be priced at $299.95 and will come in a host of different colors for customers to choose from.

Canon Rebel T5i (EOS 700D) Is The Rebel Series’ New Flagship Camera

Canon Rebel T5i (EOS 700D) Is The Rebel Series New Flagship CameraCanon has announced a couple of cameras today – the PowerShot SX280 and the DSLR Rebel SL1 (also known as the EOS 100D in other markets). If that wasn’t enough, Canon has also taken the wraps off another DSLR camera, this one being the Rebel T5i, which is also referred to as the EOS 700D depending on which region you are in. The T5i will be the new flagship camera for Canon’s entry-level Rebel lineup of DSLRs and will sport an 18MP CMOS sensor with Canon’s DIGIC 5 processor under the hood. It will be capable of shooting ISO ranges between 100-12,800 (it can go up to 25,600 in H mode according to Canon), 5fps shooting speeds with 9 AF points.

The Rebel T5i will also feature a Live View mode as well as Full HD video capture in 1080p quality. Just like the SL1, the T5i will also come bundled with Creative Filters which allows the photographer to add filters to their photos after they have taken them. A bit of a novelty but we guess there are some who would rather do the post processing on their cameras rather than on their computers. The Rebel T5i will also come in three different packages for the photographer to choose from, with the body-only kit priced at $749.99, the version with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens kit at $899.99, and last but not least the $1,099.00 bundle that comes with an EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens kit.

The Canon Rebel T5i will be available in April alongside the Rebel SL1 and the PowerShot SX280. [Press release]
