Motorola phases out Webtop, points at a Lapdockshy world

When Motorola launched its Webtop concept alongside the original Atrix 4G, it had grand visions of replacing our PCs with a smartphone, a Lapdock and some optimism for a mobile-focused future. Most of us don’t appear to have shared that rose-tinted view, as Motorola has confirmed that devices from the Photon Q 4G LTE and Droid RAZR M onward don’t carry Webtop and won’t get it in the future. The firm is blunt in explaining the cut and says that “adoption has not been strong enough” — we just weren’t buying those desktop- and laptop-oriented docks in the large numbers Motorola would need to devote further attention. As CNET explains, the move isn’t surprising in light of Google’s cost cutting as well as an initial $500 Lapdock price that likely chilled any momentum, even after prices dropped to as little as $200 in the Atrix 2 era. We’d also point to a market that still favors budget laptops and tablets: when $400 will get you an entirely separate Transformer Pad TF300, albeit without a keyboard, it’s hard to justify buying what amounts to an empty shell. At least we’ll still have our PadFone to keep us company while you read the full statement below.

Motorola’s Webtop app helps users extend their smartphone experience to larger screens. While consumers around the world have adopted Webtop and the concept spurred a lot of innovation in the industry, the adoption has not been strong enough to justify continued resources being allocated to developing Webtop on future devices. We have also seen development of the Android operating system focus on the inclusion of more desktoplike features. Beginning with Photon Q and Droid Razr M/Droid Razr HD/Droid Razr Maxx HD, we will no longer be including Webtop on our products moving forward.

Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE is now available for pre-order at Sprint

Motorola Photon QNearly a week ago, we talked about how Sprint has commenced employee training for the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE smartphone, with a targeted August 19th release date to boot. Well, the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE (don’t you think that the device is a mouthful to mention?) is now up for pre-order over at Sprint, and the August 19th release date sticks just like how barnacles love attaching themselves to the hulls of ships. Just to recap, the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE will come with a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard that is not too far different from the Motorola DROID 4, and it will burn a multi-photon sized hole in your pockets for $199.99, coupled with a new 2-year contract, of course.

The display of the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE would be the main attraction here, at least for a Motorola device, as it comes with a pixel density of 256ppi that is similar to that found on the Motorola Photon Q 4G (as seen above). I wonder what the battery life on this monster is like though.

If the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE is a phone you’re looking forward to, we understand your frustration as Sprint has yet to announce an official release date for the device. While the handset might have already been announced, a release date is nowhere in sight but thanks to this leaked photo above, it seems that Sprint has begun the training for the device. While this doesn’t really give us a specific release date, hopefully it means that we are one step closer to seeing the device launch. Either way we will be keeping our eyes peeled so be sure to stay tuned as we will keep you updated with the details! So, who’s looking forward to getting their hands on the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE?

Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE will have an unlockable bootloader

After so many years, it looks like Motorola has gotten a clue about what the Android community wants: unlockable bootloaders. While this news probably won’t affect most of you, the rest of who care about loading custom ROMs onto your Android phones will be jumping with joy. According to an announcement on the official Motorola blog, starting with the recently announced Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE, users will be able to unlock the bootloader. Apparently Motorola has managed to devise a solution that keeps in mind the security that carriers want and the customizability that power users want.

Motorola also mentioned that “other products” will have the option to unlock the bootloader in the future, but it wasn’t specified if this included their older Android phones (fingers crossed). At the moment there aren’t any specific details about the unlocking process, but we’re promised more details in the future. I wonder if Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility had anything to do with this. Either way, who’s excited about this announcement?
