Guy Plays Tekken Using an Electric Piano

If you have ever wanted to incorporate a musical instrument into games other than Rock Band, Rocksmith or Guitar Hero, this guy is your new best friend. Vimeo member Mc Cool is seen here in this video using a modded electric piano as a controller to play Tekken.

In this game, you get to kick ass and create your own theme music at the same time. If Schwarzenegger and Stallone could do that, we would have some really strange action movie soundtracks. While you ponder that, check out the video below:

Roli Seaboard Grand up for pre-order, bendable music starts at $2,000

We were pretty impressed with what Roli showed off at SXSW back in March, and now the company’s rubberized keyboard is up for pre-order. The instrument is built in a standard piano configuration, with a soft surface that allows you to directly bend pitch and add vibrato and other effects to the notes as you’re playing them — sort of like bending guitar strings. The Seaboard Grand comes in three price configurations that hit a pretty wide spread, starting at $2,000 for the 37-key Grand Studio, all the way up to $8,888.88 for the massive 88 key Grand Limited First Edition. Only 88 of the latter will actually be sold — a vaguely superstitious pricing scheme, it seems. That one will be shipping in December of this year. The others will start arriving in fall of next year.

Piano Used to Play Doom: Survival in D Major

We’ve seen a guitar used to send emails. Here’s a piano modded into a BFC for the grand daddy of modern first person shooters. Aptly named the Doom Piano, its keys are grouped into different commands, so you don’t really need to know how to play the piano to play Doom with it. Not that anyone would play the game with this thing.

    doom piano

According to CNET Asia, the Doom Piano was built by a group of indie game developers for the London Hackspace, a community-run workshop for makers and tinkerers. The devs covered the piano’s hammers with copper tape, soldered the strings to a ground and then wired three I-PACs to emulate keyboard input. From there – not that I understand what “there” is – I guess it was just a matter of mapping the keys to the controls for Doom.

Ahhh, music only a space marine could love. Also, YouTuber v21 pointed out that the man playing the Doom Piano in the video is also an FPS legend. He’s Martin Hollis, the director of GoldenEye 007.

Modders turn piano into Doom controller (video)

DNP Give me a BFG cord playing Doom on a piano

It’s been almost too long since we’ve seen something (in)appropriated to satisfy a twisted modder’s Doom craving, and this time, it’s not the hardware running Id Software’s classic game that’s ill-fitted, but the controller. If the timeline on David Hayward’s Vine account is accurate, a crew of what appear to be professional tinkerers has turned one old piano into an awkward keyboard in little more than 24 hours. Details on how this was achieved are limited, but it seems to involve some basic PC interfacing and a “load of wiring.” Head past the break to catch the noisy mod in action, and if you’d like to a see a few more clips of the “Doom Piano” in development, hit up Hayward’s Vine profile. Now, which one’s the BFG chord?

C.24 Wireless iPad Piano Keyboard: Play Me off Keyboard Cat!

There are plenty of apps which let you use your iPad like a piano, but to be honest, playing on a toucscreen is just not the same as using a tactile keyboard. And while Ion has been making a wired iPad piano keyboard for a while,  it’s not exactly the type of thing you’ll throw in your backpack.

Now, there’s a Kickstarter project which hopes to provide a high quality piano keyboard, built into a protective cover.

Miselu’s C.24 Music Keyboard adds a two octave wireless piano keyboard to your iPad. It connects wirelessly to your iPad using Bluetooth Low Energy, and transmits CoreMIDI data over Bluetooth.

The keys fold neatly into a cover that’s about the same thickness as the iPad itself, and acts as a stand for your iPad when opened up. Anti-polarity magnets give the keys the sense of weight, and infrared emitter/detector pairs capture key presses. The keyboard supports MIDI velocity data and monophonic aftertouch as well. Best of all it’s compatible with any iOS app which supports CoreMIDI, which means you’ll be able to play tunes with many apps out of the box.

There’s also a capacitive ribbon controller along the top edge of the keyboard which allows you to shift between octaves as well as to provide analog expression data for things like pitch bending.

The C.24 also has an expansion bay which will allow for the addition of things like knobs, faders, sliders and other controls, and will be releasing an open standard for creation of these add-ons.

A pledge of $99 (USD) or more will get you in on the first batch of C.24 iPad Keyboards – $50 less than the price that later backers will pay. Delivery is expected to start this November – assuming the project reaches its funding goal by August 8.

This looks like a much more serious bit of hardware than the Ion Piano Apprentice, and well worth a look for traveling electronic musicians.

Seaboard Musical Instrument Has Truly Pressure Sensitive Keys: Piano 3.0

…if you know how to play the piano or any other chordophone you might be thinking, “All keyboards are pressure sensitive!” Which is true: the harder you strike a key on a piano, the louder the sound it makes. But the Seaboard’s keys not only let you control volume, they also let you alter a key’s pitch and timbre. In other words, you can make it sound like a string instrument even though you’re playing on keys.

    roli seaboard

The Seaboard was invented by Roland Lamb. It’s one of the first applications of Lamb’s SEA (Sensory, Elastic and Adaptive) Interface, a “three-dimensional pressure-sensing” interface. The best thing about the Seaboard is that you don’t have to know how this fancy technology works because it’s very intuitive to operate:

Dougal Shaw of BBC News recently talked with Lamb about the Seaboard (there’s a copy of this video on YouTube as well):

Lamb’s company Roli will soon be offering the first edition of the Seaboard called the Grand. Only 88 units will be sold, each named after a note on a keyboard. I also wouldn’t be surprised if each one cost 88 grand. It seems that the instrument will also come with a complementary program called SoundDial. Pre-orders for the Seaboard Grand will begin on April; you can register on Roli’s website if you want to be notified about the Grand’s availability.

Can a Piano Still Be Classy When It’s Got Squishy Tube Keys?

The piano is a pretty old instrument. And sure we have electric variations, which added the option mess with the sound, but the key interface has remained pretty standard. Roli is trying to shake that up with the Seaboard Grand, a new, futuristic-style instrument that puts pitch tweaking at your fingertips. More »
