Netflix signs content deal with Disney

More popular movie titles are coming to Netflix, thanks to a significant deal made with The Walt Disney Company. The deal will give Netflix subscribers movies from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation, Marvel, and Disneynature. However, the deal actually doesn’t start until 2016 — about three years from now.

The deal will see Disney movies hit Netflix about six months after they come out of theaters, which is about the same timeframe that movies are allowed to broadcast on television. However, “high-profile Disney direct-to-video new releases” will be available for streaming starting next year, and older Disney films like Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, and Pocahontas, are actually available right now.

Previously, Netflix had been able to stream Disney movies through its deal with cable network Starz, but that deal ended back in February. Since this new deal involves Marvel and Pixar, we should be seeing popular films like Iron Man, Toy Story, and Monsters Inc. However, we’re not sure if the recently-acquired Lucasfilm will be involved in the deal. If so, the upcoming Star Wars film will also show up on Netflix.

While this may seem like big news now, 2016 is extremely far off, which means the industry may change and Netflix’s competition could butt in to create a hellstorm for Netflix, Amazon being one of the biggest threats. However, Starz currently holds the Disney contract through 2015, which is why Netflix won’t get it until 2016, so that deal is definitely secure from other services.

Real Life Luxo, Jr.: I Love Lamp

Remember the classic Pixar animated clip, Luxo, Jr.? You know, the one with the pair of articulating Anglepoise lamps playing around, and shown with the Pixar logo at the beginning of their flicks? Well, in the latest occurrence of life imitating art imitating life, some guys have actually built an animatronic lamp that moves around like the one in the movies.

pinokio luxo lamp

Well, maybe it’s not exactly like the one in the movies – for starters, this lamp is black, and both Luxo, Sr. and Jr. were white. Plus, this lamp is designed to interact with humans, tracking faces and sounds – not bounce around on a little rubber ball. Using custom code, the lamp is able to express a personality in much the same way that the lamps did in the movie.

The robotic lamp, named Pinokio, was created by Victoria University students Shanshan Zhou, Adam Ben-Dror, and Joss Doggett using Processing, Arduino, and OpenCV. If they ever manage to mass-produce these things and then license them through Pixar, they’ll sell millions.

Holy Crap, Someone Made a Real-Life Pixar Desk Lamp

Great news for anyone who’s ever dreamed of their boring desk lamp coming to life as their lovable sidekick. Inspired by the animated Luxo lamp that greets moviegoers at the start of every Pixar film, Adam Ben-Dror, Shanshan Zhou, and Joss Doggett created the Pinokio lamp which moves and reacts to its environment with what appears to be genuine emotions. How Many Balloons Would You Actually Need To Lift a House?

Last night we reported about Jonathan Trappe, a man who’s hoping to fly a tiny balloon-tethered house across the Atlantic ocean. But his Up-inspired planning would probably have been a lot easier had he access to this online calculator that lets you know exactly how many helium filled balloons you’d need to hoist your home. A Guy Wants to Fly Across the Atlantic Ocean Using a Bunch of Balloons Just Like the Movie UP

We’ll forgive you for mistaking Jonathan Trappe for Carl Fredriksen of the Pixar movie UP. Like Fredriksen, Trappe is a “cluster balloonist” who likes to fly around the world with a bunch of balloons. He’s attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean soon. More »

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: November 7, 2012

We did it folks – we made it through another election, which means that we finally get a break from those endless political ads. It won’t be long before those ads are playing all over the place again, so savor the moment while you can. We found out today that President Obama set Twitter records with that a tweet that was shared more 600,000 times, and Apple was hit with a hefty fine in a case over patents related to FaceTime. Foxconn is saying that it’s still having issues keeping up with iPhone 5 production, and Pixar has named a new building after Steve Jobs.

We had a couple of quarterly reports land this afternoon, with both Activision and Qualcomm looking great as they charge into Q4 2012. Apple executive Eddy Cue has joined Ferrari’s board of directors, while AT&T is putting up a whopping $14 billion to boost its LTE and U-Verse services. There were rumors of an iPad Mini 2 with Retina Display floating around today, and ZTE was spotted teasing a new Windows Phone 8 device with a massive 5.9-inch screen.

Gearbox has squashed a nasty exploit in Borderlands 2 with a new patch, and we learned that Kim Dotcom’s new website has been killed before it even got off the ground. AT&T has revealed off-contract pricing for the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820, and Time Warner Cable is trying to lure new customers in by giving away free Xbox 360s. We got to see Nintendo President Satoru Iwata unbox the Wii U, found out which features will be on the Wii U from launch day, and were even told that the Wii U will allow for 12 user accounts per console.

Verizon is waiving voice and text fees for those who were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, and Microsoft has released its SkyDrive app for Windows Phone 8. A new Sandvine report gives us an idea of just how popular Netflix is in North America, and Yahoo has hired a former National Geographic photographer to head up Flickr. A*STAR has revealed a new hybrid disk drive that’s only 5mm-thick, and DC Comics are now available digitally through iOS, Kindle, and NOOK devices.

Finally tonight, Don Reisinger asks if Apple actually helps its competitors, we take a closer look at Qualcomm Halo, and Chris Davis gives us his review of the Phillips hue lightbulb. That does it for tonight’s edition of the Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night everyone!

Pixar names main building after Steve Jobs

When you think of Steve Jobs, you may think of him as the guy who founded and ran Apple, but he was also a big investor in the animated movie studio Pixar, when he invested $10 million to purchase Pixar from Lucasfilm in 1986, and then was sold 20 years later to Disney for $7.4 billion. The studio has now named it’s main building on its headquarters after the man himself.

Pixar put in a brief but touching tribute to Steve Jobs in the end credits of Brave, Pixar’s latest film. However, the folks at Pixar wanted to do something a little more permanent in order to honor the man that is claimed to have dug Pixar out of a rut in order to become profitable. So, the company decided to name its main building after Jobs.

Now known officially as the The Steve Jobs Building, the plans and ideas of the main building on Pixar’s campus was actually thought up by Steve Jobs himself. Instead of having separate buildings for different departments, Jobs wanted one huge building with a large atrium that would encourage random encounters between employees.

Brad Bird, director of The Incredibles and Ratatouille, said that “the atrium initially might seem like a waste of space, but Steve realized that when people run into each other, when they make eye contact, things happen.” Of course, that was Jobs’s plan. By encouraging employees to run into each other in the hallway, he wanted new ideas to form that otherwise wouldn’t have been thought of.

Pixar Names Its HQ After Steve Jobs

Pixar has renamed part of its headquarters—in fact, the studio’s main building—after Steve Jobs. It’s easy to forget that Jobs had a non-Apple side, but in fact he invested heavily in Pixar before it became profitable, and this serves as a permanent reminder. [Pixar News via 9to5mac] More »

Pixar building gets named after Steve Jobs

Great people will always be remembered. That is why Pixar is naming its main studio after the legendary Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. As you know, Jobs was instrumental in the growth of the computer animation studio. “He financed the work at the studio long before it became profitable, pouring millions of his own money into keeping Pixar afloat because he believed in the work of the employees,” writes the Pixar Times.

Pixar even made a tribute to Jobs in the end credits of its latest animated film, Brave. But apparently that wasn’t enough. A Pixar employee posted an image on Twitter saying that Pixar’s building has just been named “The Steve Jobs Building.” A closer look at the picture suggests that it’s actually the same building that Steve Jobs designed himself with the help of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, the famous designer of Bill Gates’ Washington residential compound and the Apple Store on Fifth Avenue.

In Walter Isaacson’s epic Steve Jobs biography, the author writes that the Pixar headquarters was to be a place that “promoted encounters and unplanned collaborations.” “He didn’t want a standard office-park building—one with corrugated-metal siding or ribbon windows. The building had to look good 100 years from now. That was his main criterion,” said Tom Carlisle, Facilities Director at Pixar.
