Solar Impulse sets off on its journey across the US

Early this morning at Moffet Air Field in Mountain View, California, Solar Impulse finally took off on the first leg of its barnstorming tour across the US. Of course, this isn’t the first time the sun-powered plane and its pilots, Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, have flown long distance, but it is the first time it’s taken wing through American airspace. Why has it come across the pond? To raise pubilc and political awareness about the benefits of going green and increasing energy efficiency — and perhaps pick up an additional sponsor or two for its second-gen aircraft (currently in development) meant to fly around the world in 2015. “With the technologies we have onboard, we can divide by two the energy consumption of our world, and produce half of the rest [energy we need] with renewable sources” according to Piccard.

This first portion of the journey will end in Phoenix, and it’ll take around twenty hours to get there, as the plane’s meager output limits its average speed to around 40MPH. Should any of you want to join along with Piccard and Borschberg as they fly across the country, you can hit the Solar Impulse Across America website to see a livestream from the cockpit, along with real-time altitude, air speed and battery status of the aircraft. And, you can watch a video of Solar Impulse taking off on its North American journey and hear Borschberg talk about learning to fly it after the break.

LED Covered R/C Jet Lights up the Night

Watch remote-controlled jet planes is cool. Watching this LED covered R/C jet plane fly at night is a really beautiful thing. I don’t remember seeing any planes in the TRON movies, but I imagine a TRON plane would look something like this.

This ‘R/C JET CARF Eurosport Night flight’ by Rusjet is amazing to watch as it soars through the night skies of Russia in bright red and green LEDs. If we outfitted real planes like this, us folks below would spend hours just watching the night skies.

The pilot has some great piloting skills too. Just switch to full screen HD, sit back, relax and enjoy the video. It’s the prettiest thing you will see today.

FAA Dismisses Claims An Android App’s Ability To Takeover A Plane

FAA Dismisses Claims An Android Apps Ability To Takeover A Plane

We reported on a story where a hacker claimed to have created an Android application that would be able to completely take over an aircraft. Hugo Teso, who is a security consultant and ex-commercial pilot, says his application would be able to make an aircraft “dance to his tune,” but the FAA has dismissed Teso’s claims today.

The FAA responded to Teso’s claims by saying the systems that are certified to be used on the flight decks are immune to the exploits that exist in a PC-based ACARS training software, which is what Teso tested his Android application on and not against systems inside of an actual aircraft. The FAA released a statement saying, The FAA has determined that the hacking technique described during a recent computer security conference does not pose a flight safety concern because it does not work on certified flight hardware.” (more…)

Video Shows 9.8-Foot Python Riding on an Airliner’s Wing

This 9.8-foot (3 meters) python flew from Cairns, Australia, to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, attached to the wing of a Qantas’ passenger airplane. Sadly, the poor snake didn’t survive the trip, which lasted about 90 minutes. Warning: the video is hard to watch. Viewer discretion is advised. More »

Flying Superman: Best R/C Plane Ever?

Look up in the sky! It’s a bird… It’s a plane… It’s the geekiest R/C plane ever! You will believe a man can fly. This awesome Superman R/C plane makes if feel like Metropolis and makes observers do a double-take, wherever it flies.

superman rcAre they filming the new Superman movie with super cheap effects? Nah. Apparently a couple of guys were biking down the Pacific Coast Highway when all the sudden they see Superman fly by. WTF? Well, after some investigation, they caught up with the owner and shot some footage so that we all can see the awesomeness of this R/C plane.

Presumably, it’s one of these, just painted and caped up to look like the Man of Steel. I wish I had one, but I would just crash it on the first flight.

Commercial jet plane crashed as an experiment

Whenever we watch those high octane movies that have plenty of guns, grenades and explosions where the hero seems to be invincible to all the shrapnel that is flying around, nary suffering from so much as a scratch, there are moments when vehicles ram into buildings – with a plane being the largest ride to do so, although it is pretty rare to see a ship explode to smithereens on the silver screen. Truth, as they say, is stranger than fiction, and it seems as though the Discovery Channel purposely annihilated a plane worth millions of dollars into the desert, while observing the science behind the passengers’ best chance for survival.

I guess this is one experiment that you should get it right the first time, which follows a motto that some might adopt, “Do it once, do it right.” After all, it is not that easy recreating a crash scene, and blowing up jet planes might not go down well with the main board of the airline committee. Should the Discovery Channel manage to make the most out of this purposeful crash, it will definitely make flying even safer than it already is – all 2.8 billion flights that take place annually.

This Guy Proposed to His Girlfriend By Faking a Plane Crash [Video]

We’ve seen some awesome, hilarious and good-hearted proposals but we’ve never seen anything as twisted as this: a guy and girl fly a two person plane and take in the sweeping views (cue: aww) but then things take a wild turn, as the plane begins to crash. Well, “crash”. More »

Engineers create first ever air-to-ground quantum network

Quantum cryptography is held to be one of the most secure methods of encrypting data. This is because if a quantum-encrypted data is intercepted to be read or altered, it changes and the interception is immediately detectable. Scientists have long been trying to apply quantum-encryption in the real world.

And now, a German team of engineers has been able to create the first-ever air-to-ground quantum network over which data has been sent. The network comprised of a plane flying at a height of 20 kilometers and a base station. (more…)

Climate-Controlled Airline Seats On Their Way

Ever felt too cold during a flight? Or too hot, for that matter? Researchers are now working to devise a solution to tackle that. Work is being done at Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics to create such airline seats which could provide the passengers with different climatic options.

With the help of the new specially designed airline seats, passengers will be able to adjust the temperature of their seats as well as get a feel of fresh air. The air inlets which are designed to furnish air are noiseless and positioned such that the passenger wouldn’t be able to exactly locate them. (more…)
