Sony LittleBigPlanet Karting t-shirt contest announced

Sony sure is looking for a lot of attention for its newets Sackboy-featured PS3 game, LittleBigPlanet Karting. But it doesn’t want to do its own creative production. The company is holding a contest where users are asked to design a t-shirt for the upcoming PAX Prime event in Seattle. Whoever comes up with the best design wins a PlayStation Vita with 3G, and copies of LBP Karting for both the PS3 and Vita.

“Our artists can rework what you submit, so even if your drawing skills are not the greatest, go ahead and send in your creation! Winning designs will be selected by LBPK’s production team. We will take the winner’s design and place it on the exclusive T-Shirt that will be handed out at PAX Prime in Seattle,” Sony wrote in a PlayStation Blog post.

LittleBigPlanet 2 was supposed to be the game that let players create any kind of game they wanted. So, arguably, if you wanted a customizable LittleBigPlanet kart racing experience, you’d be able to create that already. But not everyone has that much time on their hands, so Media Molecule and development partners United Front Games will be bringing Karting to the PS3 as the next LBP entry. LittleBigPlanet is also making its way to the PlayStation Vita platform as well, so the series is still going strong.

PSA: PlayStation Network scheduled maintenance in Europe starts tomorrow

PSA: PlayStation Network scheduled maintenace in Europe starts tomorrowEuropean gamers are warned to get something else to do from Thursday afternoon. Sony’s PlayStation Network is set to go offline on that side of the Atlantic starting from 4PM GMT tomorrow, through to 8AM Friday. Maintenance work will pull the PlayStation Store, account management and registration offline for this time, although anyone looking to play online can still do so — as long as they’re signed in to PSN before network… work begins. Updates on Sony’s network tinkering will be posted on both on its own blog and twitter — linked below for your convenience.

PlayStation Network Scheduled Maintenance in Europe

Those living in Europe and some other countries, and rely a whole lot on your PS3 (especially with everything that PlayStation Network offers), you might want to take note that the following countries – AE, AU, GB, IE, and NZ, will not see your PlayStation Network remain online from 16:00 on Thursday 26th July 2012 until 08:00 on Friday 27th July 2012, BST, due to a scheduled maintenance program. As usual, the maintenance period would mean you cannot access services such as these – PlayStation Store on PS3, PSP and PS Vita, PlayStation Network Account Management, and PlayStation Network Account Registration.

Those who want to play online during the scheduled maintenance, you can do so if you happen to sign in to PSN prior to the maintenance window kicking off. Do take note that the services listed in the above paragraph will remain as dead as a doornail even if you are signed into the Network before. So do make a note of the above dates and times in your respective calendars lest you think that the PlayStation Network is under some sort of hacker attack.

Can we establish a KIRF award for Most Likely to Invite Multiple Lawsuits? If so, Long Xun Software would have to claim the statuette for its Droid X360, at least if it dared set foot in the US. This prime example of keepin’ it real fake is even more of a PS Vita clone than the Yinlips YDPG18, but goes the extra mile with a name that’s likely to irk Microsoft, Motorola, Verizon and George Lucas all at once. That’s even discounting the preloaded emulators for just about every pre-1999 Nintendo, Sega and Sony console. Inside, you’ll at least find a device that’s reasonably up to snuff: the 5-inch handheld is running Android 4.0 on a 1.5GHz single-core Quanzhi A10 processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of built-in space, a 2-megapixel camera at the back and a VGA shooter at the front. If the almost gleeful amount of copyright and trademark violation isn’t keeping you from wanting this award-winner, you’ll have to ask Long Xun for pricing and availability.

AMD exec behind Wii and Xbox 360 graphics jumps the fence to NVIDIA

AMD has been suffering a conspicuous brain drain, with executives like ATI veteran Rick Bergman and CTO Eric Demers crossing over to tangentially or directly competitive companies like NVIDIA and Qualcomm. Chalk up another one for the list — strategic development VP Bob Feldstein has bounded towards NVIDIA’s (literally) greener pastures. The blow cuts deeper than usual through Feldstein’s responsibility for graphics in most of the consoles from the past few years: he headed up work behind the Xenos chip in earlier Xbox 360s and the Hollywood core in the Wii, and he likely had some say in the Wii U’s video hardware as well. While the staff shuffle won’t directly affect AMD’s Fusion processors or Radeon cards, it’s hard to see much of a positive for AMD’s future in video gaming, even in the light of rumors that the next PlayStation and Xbox might use some of Feldstein’s work.

New Beck songs get visualized, inspire musical platforming

Beck’s latest album won’t debut on the shelves of your local brick-and-mortar retailer. Instead, Cities, as its called, will roll out on Sound Shapes for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita. The platformer’s song-inspired stages transform the record’s three tunes, Cities, Touch the People and Spiral Staircase, into interactive music videos, with original art and lyrics inserted into the environment. If traipsing through the included soundscapes — not all of which are Beck-centric — isn’t enough to please, the developers are gifting gamers with the tools needed to build levels of their own. As a cross-play game, the $14.99 price tag nets both the console and portable versions of the downloadable title. Sound Shape won‘t hit digital shelves until August 7th, but you can catch a sneak peak (and a quick listen) after the break.

Did Sony’s latest PlayStation 3 redesign just get outed by Brazil’s Anatel?

Remember that mysterious new PS3 variant that passed through the FCC not too long ago? Although that listing didn’t have photos to confirm a redesign, a new one has hit Anatel (essentially Brazil’s version of the FCC) with a quartet of pictures in tow. Specifically, it cites models CECH-4011A, CECH-4011B and CECH-4011C, matching up well with the 4K labeling from the aforementioned FCC visit — if you’ll recall, the current PS3 Slim has a 3K model number. According to Tecnoblog, the the three models point to a shockingly storage-cramped 16GB version, along with 250GB and 500GB variants. While this Anatel document appears to be from Sony, we’d be remiss not to mention that we haven’t been able to load the photos as Tecnoblog has. In terms of looks, apart from appearing extra slim — and decidedly less attractive — the system notably seems to be rocking a top-loading disc drive (this would be a first for the PS3). For now, we’d advise taking this potential leak with a grain of salt, but rest assured that we’ll inform you if we hear anything official from Sony.

Ouya’s $99 Android-based gaming console meets Kickstarter goal: $950k in under 12 hours (update: it’s a record)

The gaming public at large has spoken. In less than 12 hours, Yves Behar’s Android-based Ouya gaming console has reached its lofty funding goal of $950,000 on Kickstarter. To refresh your memory, the $99 system (which was only $95 for 1,000 swift early adopters) packs a Tegra 3 CPU, 8GB of storage, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, a USB 2.0 port and an SD card slot — that price also grants you a single controller with a touch sensor. Most notably, the system is aimed at being extremely developer-friendly, having open hardware and software with a push for free-to-play content. There are only about 5,000 units (out of 10,000) (update: that number has been bumped to 20,000, with just under 10k available) left at the $99 price, so feel free to check out our in-depth chat about Ouya with Behar himself here before you head over to Kickstarter. It appears that the traditional business model for gaming consoles just got rocked, and we can’t wait to see the final results.

Update: If you thought that was fast, you’d be right: Kickstarter has confirmed that Ouya achieved the biggest first day ever for one of its hosted projects, and it’s just the eighth project ever to crack the million-dollar mark, joining an esteemed company that includes Double Fine’s upcoming adventure game and the all-time champion, the Pebble smartwatch.

A handful of details briefly slipped out about the project earlier, but now it’s here: the Ouya, an attempt not just to delve into the cutthroat world of TV game consoles but to try and shift the goal posts. At its heart, the design sounds more like a smartphone than a gaming rig with a quad-core Tegra 3 and 8GB of storage running Android 4.0. The upscale, RF wireless gamepad’s standout is a built-in trackpad for playing mobile games alongside the familiar sticks and buttons — clever, though not entirely new. But with completely open hardware and software, an emphasis on free-to-play gaming and an all-important $99 price, the system is a gamble by a handful of game industry luminaries that at least a subset of players are frustrated with the status quo enough to want a real break. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale release date dropped

This week the folks at Sony have let it be known that the game PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, possible the biggest title for the console this year, will be popping up on October 23rd in the USA. This news also provides the dates for the majority of Europe, that being October 24th, and inside the UK, that being October 26th. This game is set to feature a litany of battle-ready characters from PlayStation-centric franchise games and will be Sony’s great answer to the classic bash-festival that is Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros., also set for a new version later this year.

This game will be popping up for not only the PlayStation 3, but for PS Vita [see our full review of the PS Vita here] as well, and will be able to be played over the web and from the PS Vita as a controller for the PS3 too! Sony is going all-out to support this game for the future of what’s undoubtedly going to be a franchise – or so they hope, of course.

You’ll be able to play as such odd characters as UNCHARTED’s Nathan Drake, BioShock’s Big Daddy, or Twisted Metal’s own killer clown character Sweet Tooth! Have a peek at a trailer for the game here:
