New Sony PlayStation 3 model suggested in FCC filing

New Sony PlayStation 3 model suggested in FCC filing

Hawk-eyed FCC watchers over at PocketNews have spotted some curious paperwork for an unknown PS3 model called the “CECH-4001X.” The current, existing slimline PS3 is the 3000 series, and it has its FCC label in a different location to that shown in the new filing, leading Eurogamer to suggest that this could be a “Super Slim” variant — which that site says has cropped up in separate rumors circulating before Gamescom next month. At this point, it’s probably too much to hope that magic number “4” represents anything more significant.

Sony Japan: PSOne classics coming to Vita in summer update, PlayStation 3 to get downloadable PS2 catalog later this month

PS One classics coming to Vita in 18 update, PS3 gets access to downloadable PS2 catalogue in Japan later this month

If you’ve been aching to wile away hundreds more hours replaying Final Fantasy classics on the go, then Sony Japan’s got some good news for you. It’s finally revealed that the ability to play those charming, if a little dated, PSOne titles will arrive on the PS Vita‘s next software update, version 1.80, later this summer. This little nugget was tucked away behind the news that a handful of PS2 titles, playable on all versions of the PS3, will launch in the Japanese PlayStation Store on July 25th. The first wave of titles include Biohazard Code: Veronica, Siren and Dragon Force, all priced between 800 and 1,200 yen. No news yet, however, on when (or if) a similar retro-gaming bounty will arrive outside of Japan.

Sony’s PlayStation Home to celebrate July 4

If you weren’t invited to a party, if you don’t live near a spot where fireworks will be lighting the sky tomorrow night, and if you just really have nothing better to do with your time, Sony will be getting festive on your behalf in the virtual world of PlayStation Home. Special events and exclusive items are up for grabs if that’s where you want to spend your Independence Day.

In terms of the latter, anyone who visits the casino inside Home will receive a free Uncle Sam Top Hat. A handful of new digital apparel items are also being added for purchase, like star-studded vests and red-and-white-striped skirts. In addition, if you head to Pier Park, you’ll be met with a whole bunch of patriotic decorations and a “very special reward” for those who visit tomorrow.

And finally, no 4th of July celebration would be complete without fireworks. So players can activate their Pyrotechnic Overhead Display Interface (PODI) to create a dazzling fireworks show on the spot. “PODI is a friendly little machine who loves attention. The more time you spend with him creating displays and setting them off, the happier he becomes and when he’s happy, PODI loves to give out rewards. Some of them are for everyone, some are just for you – spend time playing with PODI to make sure you get them all,” Sony explained in a blog post.

PlayStation Cloud : how Gaikai may change Sony Computer Entertainment forever

PSN logoAs you may have seen yesterday, Sony has acquired online gaming company Gaikai, which is specialized in executing games on powerful remote servers and streaming them to any types of clients, from thin set top boxes to tablets or computers. In the short term, this won’t do much more than making PC games accessible from a PS3, this acquisition will open a new world of possibilities for Sony.

For example, you can imagine that Sony will make PlayStation games available to more people. The same technology can also be used to stream movies (+music) and build a service such as Vudu, which can be easily deployed on any TV and devices because most of the user-interface code is executed on remote servers. This is Sony’s best acquisition in a long time. (more…)

Sony drops VAIO T from free PlayStation offer, hikes real cost of entry to $970

Remember how it seemed too good to be true that Sony’s back to school promo would let you buy a VAIO T and get a free PlayStation 3 or Vita worth a third of the value of the Ultrabook you just bought? Well, it was. Sony has quietly dropped the $750 laptop from the PCs that qualify for the deal, raising the real qualifying price to $970 for a 15.5-inch VAIO S. Some will cry foul at being denied such a killer bargain without warning, but it’s easy to see why Sony backed out: that’s a lot of gear to give away for little in return. Dreams of heading to class with an ultraportable in hand and a PS3 at the dorm will have to be postponed, then, even if it’s still an ample discount.

[Thanks, Gabriel]
