PopCap reportedly working on triple-A console title

Here’s something that’s pretty interesting: PopCap, developer of such casual gaming hits as Bejeweled, Plants vs. Zombies, and Peggle, might be working on a triple-A console title based on DICE’s Frostbite 2.0 engine. Yes, that’s the same Frostbite 2.0 that Battlefield 3 is built on. That’s what a new job posting from Electronic Arts suggests anyway, which was discovered by Twitter user superannuation, a person known throughout the games industry for his talent of digging up job ads that give away a surprising amount of information.

Specifically, PopCap is seeking a “an experienced generalist SE to build a AAA console title,” which is interesting to say the least. “This generalist will work on a broad range of game systems including, but not limited to: animation, audio, resource management, pipelines and visual effects,” the listing continues. “The ideal candidate will also have experience working with the Frostbite 2 engine.” If this job listing is to be believed – and really there doesn’t seem to a be a reason why it shouldn’t be – then it appears PopCap is ready to step out of the casual space and into the realm of console games.

If you want the job, however, you better be prepared – PopCap requires that you have a bachelor’s degree in computer science or the equivalent job experience, along with 5 years of experience with C++. The studio would also like it if you have experience making games for the PS3 or Xbox 360 and have shipped one major title, though those are merely listed as “recommended requirements.” If you get the job, perhaps you’d like to let us in on what PopCap is plotting?

Needless to say, we’re pretty excited to see what PopCap has in store for consoles. PopCap’s casual games have addicted millions of people all around the world, so if it can make a triple-A console title that’s as engaging as its casual games, then we’re all in for a treat. Stay tuned, as we’ll update you when we hear more.

Dark Souls 2 announced, destined for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3

Long been the substance of rumors, many a’ gamer’s hopeful speculation has now been confirmed: Dark Souls 2 is official, and it’s heading towards a console near you. The announcement was made at VGA 2012, and a trailer appeared a short while later on YouTube, which has since been removed. Thus far no launch date has been given, but we do know that it will be available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Software’s Dark Souls is a fantasy RPG, and by the looks of its trailer, the sequel will be just as awesome as the first iteration in the series. The trailer is a pre-rendered low-res video, but it reveals a nice glimpse into the game’s world. Intriguing characters, fiery mountains, dragons, and fatally-wounded characters all make an appearance.

Namco Bandai’s Vice President of Marketing Carlson Choi offered this statement. “Dark Souls II retains the core essence of Dark Souls while evolving to present new twists and challenges that are sure to please longtime fans and attract new comers to the series. Software is going to take a very dark path with Dark Souls II; players will need to look deep within themselves to see if they have the intestinal fortitude to embark on this journey.”

Intestinal fortitude aside, Dark Souls 2 will present gamers with an “entirely new story” and an expanded world. The sequel will be directed by Tomohiro Shibuya of Monster Hunter fame, and will have the series’ creator Hidetaka Miyazaki overseeing its production. The trailer keeps disappearing as fast as it reappears, so keep your eyes peeled on YouTube, check around, and you’re bound to find a copy before it gets taken down.

PlayStation Store hits the web under the radar

It’s time to get busy with Sony’s vast collection of content for multiple different platforms with the first appearance of their browser-based PlayStation Store. This store is set to sell TV and movie content as well as PlayStation games galore, but at the moment isn’t quite perfectly synced up for all media that’s offered across the platforms it serves. In other words you should certainly check it out, but you won’t be able to see everything your PlayStation sees.

This online store will eventually allow you to download content to your Sony account, this connecting with your PlayStation as well as your PlayStation Vita and your Sony Tablets running Android. What’s happening right this minute is that the company is going through sort of a live test-run with limited content to make sure everything is up-to-spec for a more vast release. It’s not that you’re not going to get the content you purchase now, it’s just that you might not have the full store experience.

In the near future you’ll be able to easily purchase content from the web-based store and have it sent to your devices one-by-one. This is a method that the Google Play store uses for your many connected Android devices and relatively similar to what iTunes does with purchases through their app as well – everyone is owned by you through your account, not just on your device.

According to a comment made by official PlayStation Blog SCEE Blog Manager Fred Dutton, the store is set to be launched in a larger way soon:

“Regarding [the lack of a major announcement] – we are testing a new web store, which we look forward to announcing and launching to the PlayStation/Sony community shortly.” – Dutton

Have a peek at the timeline below to get more info on recent events surrounding the PlayStation Store and device connected to it, and get pumped up about a wider release as soon as this afternoon!

PlayStation 3 now #1 device for Netflix streaming

Sony announced today that the PlayStation 3 is now the most popular platform to watch Netflix on. The streaming service is currently available on every major gaming console and most mobile devices, as well as the Netflix website. Out of all those platforms, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s Phil Rosenberg says that “more people stream Netflix content to their televisions via PS3 than any other device worldwide.”

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings also had some words about the recent milestone for Sony and the PlayStation 3. He says that the “PS3 is a natural fit for Netflix in terms of developing” and deploying the service’s newest features. Hastings says that it’s really easy to update the Netflix PS3 app, and it allows the company to “transparently update” the application with new features “on a daily basis.”

The PlayStation 3 first introduced Netflix over three years ago, and it’s been a platform for which many Netflix features have been released first. For instance, the PlayStation 3 was the first to offer Netflix in full 1080p video resolution with 5.1-channel surround sound, as well as offering post play, second-screen controls, on device sign-up, and subtitles.

Last year, though, the Nintendo Wii held the crown for the most-popular Netflix streaming device, according to Nielsen. The research firm reported that the Wii represented 25% of Netflix’s market share, with the PlayStation 3 trailing behind at 13%. We’re not sure how long the PS3 will be able to keep its #1 spot, but we reckon that it won’t be held onto forever.

BioShock 2 now free to play all week long for PlayStation Plus subscribers

Sony will be pushing an update to its PlayStation Store tomorrow that will introduce a slew of deals that users will want to take advantage of. One of the better deals, however, is that they’re releasing BioShock 2 to the ever-expanding Instant Game Collection for free this week. The game will be available for free if you’re a Plus member once the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow.

BioShock 2 was released in February 2010, and it’s the sequel to the original BioShock, which featured some of the best gameplay elements we’ve ever seen. All week long, PlayStation Plus users will have the chance to download and play the game for free via the service’s Instant Game Collection.

Other deals for Plus subscribers include a 10% discount on Rockstar Games Collection Edition 1, which is a bundle that includes Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, L.A. Noire, and Midnight Club: Los Angeles Complete Edition. The bundle usually costs $59.99, but Plus members can pick it up for $53.99 — not a huge discount, but better than no discount at all.

Puzzle game Puddle will also be 50% off on both of its platforms, costing only $5 for PlayStation 3 gamers and just $4 for PlayStation Vita users. However, it’s not cross-platform compatible, so if you want the game on both systems, you’ll have to cough up $9 for the pair. Sony has said that they plan to release weekly updates to the PlayStation Store that will include new deals and offers for every week all month long.

Skyrim Dragonborn DLC confirmed for PS3 and PC [UPDATE]

Earlier today, we told you about a ridiculous amount of leaked Dragonborn details, but now we’re getting some news that is perhaps even bigger. Bethesda has confirmed Dragonborn for PC and PS3, saying that it’ll be available on those platforms early next year. We don’t have a specific release date to work with, but it stands to reason that Dragonborn will be available on PC and PS3 sometime in January, around a month after it launches on Xbox 360.

What’s surprising, of course, is the fact that the DLC has been confirmed for PS3. Bethesda’s struggles with Skyrim DLC on PS3 have been well-documented, with PS3 users receiving none of the DLC Xbox 360 and PC players have. That looks like it’s all going to change with Dragonborn, which is arguably the most exciting expansion released for Skyrim so far.

Sadly, Bethesda’s announcement didn’t give any updates on the progress of Dawnguard and Hearthfire on PS3, which makes it seem like the studio will give those two a pass and jump straight to Dragonborn. As far as content goes, Dragonborn is apparently the expansion to have, but we know plenty of PS3 owners who would love to have Dawnguard and Hearthfire, just like their Xbox 360 and PC counterparts.

At least Dragonborn has been confirmed for PS3, which is much better than nothing. Perhaps this means Bethesda has worked out the issues it’s having with PS3 and that Dawnguard and Hearthfire are coming to the console after all? It’s hard to say, but we’ll let you know if Bethesda says anything else regarding PS3 Skyrim DLC. Stay tuned.

Update: Bethesda has explained why it’s skipping straight to Dragonborn on PS3 in a statement to Eurogamer. “We think Dragonborn is our best add-on for Skyrim yet, and we didn’t want fans to wait long, so that’s our current focus. Each platform takes a lot of time and attention.” When asked about the fate of Dawnguard and Hearthfire, Bethesda replied, “As noted in our blog post, we’re not done with content for Skyrim. When we’re ready to share more details, we’ll update everyone.”

So, it looks like Hearthfire and Dawnguard may still come to PS3 eventually, but don’t expect to hear anything new about them until we’re into 2013. It isn’t the most desirable of situations, but at least Bethesda has confirmed Dragonborn for PS3, which is much better than nothing at all.

Sony files patent for hybrid DualShock/Move controller

Heads up, PlayStation fans. Sony filed an interesting patent last year and it has just been made public today. The patent is for a hybrid DualShock/Move gaming controller, meaning that you could use it as a normal controller just like any of Sony’s other DualShock devices, or you could split it apart to make two Move controllers.

The controller is officially called the “Hybrid Separable Motion Controller”, and while it’s a bold idea, the execution is mostly what you’d expect. It’s simply just two Move orbs attached on top of a DualShock controller. Then, the controller is detachable in the middle, with each half stuffed with an accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, vibration capability, and even a speaker.

Obviously, the hybrid controller can be operated either separately or locked together into one unit, and it’s designed in a way that games will be able to detect which configuration is in use. If you’re worried about the thing flying out of your hands, some of the drawings even show a wrist strap attach to each of the two sides.

We’re not sure if Sony intends to use this concept in the PlayStation 3 or maybe even future devices. It’s also possible that this could just be an idea that they may never end up using, so keep your fingers crossed and we’ll see what Sony comes up with in the future. It’s possible that we could see something new from them at E3 2013, but we’ll keep an open mind until then.

Gran Turismo 5 gets Corvette C7 Test Prototype download

As of this morning, PlayStation 3 owners can download a camouflaged Corvette C7 Test Prototype in Gran Turismo 5. This comes from a collaboration between Chevy and the game’s developers, Polyphony Digital, to create an authentic driving experience. The actual vehicle is slated to be unveiled in January.

The developers were careful to replicate the game version of the prototype in such a way that even the smallest details are present. This comes in addition to the last six generations of Corvettes, all of which are available for gameplay in Gran Turismo. Says the announcement, the Corvette is one of the most popular cars amongst gamers.

Vice President of Chevrolet Global Marketing offered this statement. “Until now, only the most skilled drivers on the Corvette team have been authorized to push the test prototypes to the limits on some of the most challenging track surfaces in the world. Through this unique collaboration with Gran Turismo, Chevrolet is able, for the first time, to give performance car enthusiasts access to such an exclusive driving experience.”

You can nab the download from the PlayStation Store for free. The Gran Turismo franchise has seen sales in excess of 67 million since it was first launched, and holds the title of the all-time highest selling PlayStation console exclusive. Says Polyphony’s President, “As car enthusiasts, we’re thrilled to give fans this extraordinary level of access to the seventh generation Corvette that otherwise would not be possible.”

Levine: BioShock Infinite won’t have a multiplayer mode

These days, it seems like publishers are all about multiplayer. They’re sticking multiplayer in where it doesn’t belong (we’re looking at you, Dead Space and God of War) simply because they think a game won’t sell as well without it. It’s been a major sticking point for a lot of gamers who don’t want to see single player modes become less important, but thankfully, not all publishers and developers have been bitten by the multiplayer bug.

One of these studios is apparently Irrational Games. BioShock Infinite promises to be one of the biggest games of 2013, but when it eventually arrives, it will be without any sort of multiplayer mode. When asked on Twitter if BioShock Infinite would include multiplayer, game lead Ken Levine replied with a simple “No multi,” confirming that the game will be a true-to-form single player experience.

We’ve heard of work-in-progress multiplayer modes for BioShock Infinite before, but it seems all of those modes have been canned. Good thing too, because historically, gamers haven’t been very nice about multiplayer modes that feel shoehorned in. BioShock 2 had one such multiplayer mode, though many thought it was unnecessary and didn’t add that much to the overall experience.

Being a single player-only title worked well for the original BioShock, so we don’t doubt it’ll work for BioShock Infinite too. BioShock Infinite will be launching for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on February 26, 2013. What do you think of Levine’s announcement that it won’t have any multiplayer mode?
