PlayStation Mobile shackles Sony to gaming past

In the announcement for the PlayStation Mobile store and environment released this week by Sony is a clause that’s rather tiny and is disguised as a perk: three devices allowed for each game. In the past, back before the smartphone, this sort of note would have been amazing – you mean I can play this game on my PlayStation at home as well as at my cousin Joe’s house? Amazing! Now here in the present, three devices is a limit that Sony shouldn’t be working with.

As the gaming universe very, very reluctantly starts making its way into the mobile environment, limits in play continue to appear here and there. A feature for the PlayStation Vita is cross-compatibility with some games between it and the PlayStation 3. Cross-compatibility for a game between smartphones and tablets should, by all means, be a given by now. With the PlayStation Mobile environment, you can play a game you purchase on three devices and that’s it – once you’ve played the game on your tablet and your smartphone, you get one more choice.

For a lot of people, this isn’t a problem. If you’ve got a smartphone and a tablet, you’re probably going to have those devices for some time to come. If you purchase a smartphone, you’re likely nailed in to a 2-year contract with your mobile carrier, and a tablet isn’t something you buy more than once a year – if that. What the PlayStation Mobile rule of 3 does not account for is the ever-growing multi-device-owning public.

I should not be counted as I’ve got more devices in and out of my hands than most people will ever touch as a product reviewer – but given the current release schedule for products at less than a year between one device and its upgraded version (see: HTC One X+), it’s not out of line to assume people are switching devices much more often than the 2-year lock implies. It must be then that Sony wants to work in the old world, one where the idea of piracy being so important that they limit the devices on which a game can be played for the legitimate multi-device-owning public.

And that’s your first-world problem opinion for the day. Do you own more than three devices that you’d like to play the same game on? Let us know!

Sony PlayStation Mobile launches for Vita and select Android devices

Sony is looking to ramp up their mobile efforts even more by introducing PlayStation Mobile, a new service that allows gamers to play a handful of games across different mobile platforms. The service will allow you start a game on one device (like the Vita), and pick up where you left off on another device (like an Android smartphone or tablet).

There are a couple caveats that you should be aware of, though. First, the service only works on “PlayStation Certified” devices, which means the Vita, obviously, but also only a handful of newer Android devices from Sony and HTC. The list consists of the Xperia Play, Xperia Arc, Xperia S, Xperia Ion, Xperia Acro, Xperia Acro HD, Sony Tablet S, Tablet P, the HTC One X, One X+, One S, and One V.

Second, PlayStation Mobile only works on up to three devices. This isn’t too much of a problem, since most users wouldn’t own more than a Vita, smartphone, and tablet at once, but for a service where its main selling point is playing games on multiple devices, you’d think they would allow unlimited devices or at least more than three.

Once you purchase games, and have PlayStation Mobile installed on three of your devices, you’re pretty much good to go. The games take advantage of both the Vita’s touchscreen and gaming controls, as well as the on-screen virtual DualShock controller for the Android devices. Right now, there are only 20 games to choose from, but we’re guessing that number will grow over time.

Sony Playstation Mobile store now live, offers cross-platform games and apps from $0.80

Sony Playstation Mobile store now live, offers crossplatform games and apps from $080

After what feels like a mighty long time since it was first announced, Sony’s cross-platform PlayStation Mobile store is now up and running with an initial line-up of games (plus one lonely-looking app) for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Certified Android devices. That hardware category currently includes Sony’s latest tablets and Xperias, plus HTC One-branded handsets — check the source link for a full list and installation instructions. So far, we can access PSM on the Vita via a new tab on the PlayStation Store, and we know that readers are having luck on devices in the US — including the Xperia Play — but the One X (both global and AT&T) has only given us error messages. If you succeed or fail, please post your results below and we’ll update accordingly.

Update: Okay, there are definitely teething problems on HTC devices and we’re reaching out for an explanation. Meanwhile, owners of the Nexus 7 and the Xperia Ion on AT&T bring happier tidings.

Sony announces PlayStation Store for PlayStation Mobile

If you own a PlayStation-certified Sony Xperia Android handset, it looks like your wallets might be on the verge of getting lighter. Sony has officially announced that come 3rd of October, they will be launching the PlayStation Store for PlayStation Mobile. Basically this will give users with PlayStation-certified devices access to the store where they will be able to purchase PlayStation Mobile games. Not everyone will be getting access to the store at launch and only countries such as the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Australia will be the lucky few.

We expect more countries to be added to the list at a later date, but for those living in the countries listed above, you will have 30 games to choose from to download, with more hopefully being added in the future. Interestingly for those living in Japan where Fujitsu and Sharp smartphones are abundant, Sony has also revealed that selected Fujitsu and Sharp smartphones will also be granted PlayStation certification so you guys will also be able to access the PlayStation Store without having to own a Sony device.

PlayStation Store for PlayStation Mobile to launch October 3

Back in August, Sony started talking up PlayStation Mobile at Gamescon. PlayStation Mobile is Sony’s initiative aiming at making Android devices able to play PlayStation style games. Originally, only Sony branded smartphones and tablets were to be offered access to PlayStation Mobile. Sony later started accepting third-party devices from Asus and others.

Sony announced this week that it would start delivering content for PlayStation Mobile through the PlayStation Store on October 3. Sony promises that the launch of the service will see PlayStation-like content delivered on a variety of mobile devices that are popular today. The service will launch in nine different countries.

Launch countries include Japan, the United States, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Australia. Sony says that more countries will follow and at launch, users will be able to enjoy 30 new titles in a variety of gaming genres. Games will be offered in adventure, action, puzzle, sports, and simulation genres.

Sony says that the games will sell for between 50 and 850 yen in Japan. Games will be available that were created by Sony and from third-party developers and publishers. Sony will continue to expand the available library of games on PlayStation Mobile as new titles become available. Sony also intends to accelerate the expansion of PlayStation Certified devices so more smartphones and tablets will be able to access the games.

Sharp and Fujitsu join PlayStation Certified program, PS Mobile SDK available this November

Move over HTC — both Sharp and Fujitsu are joining Sony’s PlayStation Certified program, allowing games in the PlayStation Mobile marketplace to be purchased and played on various portable devices from the two hardware manufacturers. In Fujitsu’s case, its ARROW series of smartphones and tablets will carry the PlayStation Mobile titles, while Sharp isn’t getting specific just yet.

Beyond the partnership announcement, Sony’s PlayStation Mobile SDK comes out of beta this November and becomes available for any developer. Licences cost $100/year, and the SDK becomes available on a region-by-region basis starting with Japan, the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, allowing for cross platform development on PlayStation Certified devices and the Vita.

Update: The PlayStation Mobile store will launch on October 3rd in nine countries, including Japan, the US, Canada and the UK, carrying 30 titles on the opening day, with more coming as they roll off the production line.

PlayStation Mobile announced, PlayStation Plus to arrive on PS Vita

Ps Vita Review ConclusionPlayStation Mobile has just been announced, where this would mean PS-certified devices now have a game store to help you get your game on. First unveiled by Sony at their very own pre-Gamescom conference, PlayStation Mobile prides itself in being a new service that targets PS-certified tablets, smartphones and of course, the PS Vita. You could say that this gaming service is somewhat similar to the App Store by Apple, where there will be (keep you fingers crossed!) plenty of games from indie as well as major developers. Even better is the fact that your purchases are made just once – each time you make a purchase on PlayStation Mobile, the same title becomes available across your slew of devices. Now for just a launch date…

Apart from that, we have also gotten whiff of PlayStation Plus being extended to PS Vita from September onwards, although additional details will be revealed in due time as right now, we are just groping in the dark. Good times look set to be in store for PS Vita owners though!

PlayStation Mobile aims for iPhone and Android at Gamescon

This week at Gamescon in Cologne, Germany, Sony is making a case for PlayStation Mobile, their next big phase in keeping relevant with the very smart device-minded society we now all live in. This initiative will be aiming for both Apple’s mobile OS and Google’s Android, but in very different ways for the both of them. While Apple’s iPod nano, iPhone, and iPad are all essentially declared enemies of this PlayStation Mobile initiative, Sony is embracing Android as the only 3rd party operating system to be able to run PlayStation-certified games.

Sony has made it clear that their own devices running Android – tablets, the original PlayStation Phone (Xperia PLAY) and a vast collection future phones will be first on their list when it comes to definite entry into the PlayStation Mobile program, 3rd party devices and manufacturers are now being accepted into the fold. Two examples are the manufacturers Asus and Wikipad, both of them ready to bring on PlayStation-certified games as they launch new products later this year.

When a device is “PlayStation Certified”, it means that Sony has literally checked out the device and approved it before it’s been released to the public. Sony’s approval process requires that each device is able to play their quickly growing set of mobile games and that they essentially agree to continued software support as well. This PlayStation Mobile initiative also promises cross-compatibility and one-download-only situations with the PS Vita this week as well.

Another notable device currently in the PlayStation Mobile universe is the HTC One X, a smartphone with either a dual-core processor from Qualcomm or a quad-core processor from NVIDIA. The power is there, and Sony wants a piece!

Have a peek at the timeline below to see more about the PlayStation Mobile initiative, and get pumped up as Sony takes a charge into the future!

PlayStation Mobile detailed: different screens, same games

PlayStation Mobile announced connects to Android platform

Sony’s decided to spill the beans on PlayStation Mobile, its upcoming cross-platform gaming service. It will connect to your own PSN ID, linking into its software store and aiming to offer up a “wide range of portable experiences.” We’re still looking at PlayStation-certified devices here, but Sony’s also announced that ASUS and (bizarrely) Wikipad hardware will join the (pretty Sony-centric) line-up. We can already recognize a handful of Xperia phones alongside the Tablet S and, of course, Sony’s premier handheld, which will also be able to play the incoming selection of mini-games.
